"authentic Italian cold cut Subs?"
If you wish "authentic Italian" I would suggest a trip to Italy. Their subs are probably "authentic."

I think the OP was pretty clear he was talking about Italian cold cuts and he explained exactly the type of sub. My grandmother, who immigrated to Boston from Genoa, would consider her sandwiches authentic Italian. I've never been to Italy but had plenty of authentic Italian subs.

Yup. I'm only part time there so I can't answer your question. But the timing was of your thread was ironic. Last night I was trying a fairly new sandwich shop here in Westminster, Massachusetts and they had an Italian sub. Mortadella, capicola, Genoa salami, provolone, with onions, pickles, tomato, oil and hots. The menu also had mayo on it, which I thought was strange. I removed the mayo and it was very good, almost like what I grew up with in East Boston.

We like White House, but we eat at Sack O Subs in Ocean City many more times.
It’s not an Italian Sandwich like Italy, it’s an Italian Hoagie, like South Philly (i.e Angelos).

I’ve been on the search for a sandwich from home, the closest is Jersey Mikes.
Haven’t found a good cheese steak or real pizza place yet.
There’s a Philly themed food truck that sometimes is at LSL, havent tried their cheese steaks yet.

Jersey Mikes ?Yes, about as fresh as you can get. The other option would be to make it yourself if it’s only “Italian meat and oil”. I found this online.

You're in Florida now. Good luck. I'm still searching for a good pizza and bakery. The best subs I found were Jersey Mike's Jersey shore sub. Reminds me of home.

Sorry I can't help. The only sandwich I long for is, sadly, a distant memory. A stand in Alhambra, California, circa 1960's and 70's, called The Hat. Served either a roast beef dip or a pastrami dip. A crusty Italian loaf cut in half, piled very high with beef or pastrami, then submerged in a cauldron of au jus for the beef or a cauldron of (?) pastrami jus, wrapped in butcher paper and served dripping with juice and a huge pickle. When they changed bread supplier it just didn't quite taste the same. Like when someone you love passes, you may still find people who are wonderful, but jut not the same.
Remember the way it was, but don't expect the new to be clones of your past. Be thankful for your good memories.

make your own at home, best answer. AS far as Jersey mikes goes, better eat there sooner than later, as Private equity bought out the chain, and most likely it will be going down hill and out of business sometime in the future. (I didn't say near future, but the quality may change in the near future)

Publix, in my opinion has the best subs. Boars head meat is the best quality compared to Jersey mikes. They will make whatever you want.

Boars Head had to recall an enormous amount of meat, and entirely close a plant, due to contamination, thus " pulling a Boeing".

I’ve lived in Naples and Verona, Italy and believe any “authentic” Italian sandwich is void of mayonnaise . My favorite place in this area is Stacio’s in Orlando. It’s one of several places I always stop at when in that area.

Locally, I’ll grab something at Gio’s Deli and Mercato.

I was stationed in New Jersey in 1969-1970 and there was an Italian deli in a nearby town that made the best hoagies. He had an oil and herb mixture he poured on the sandwich that was superb. The owner piled the meat on along with all the other fixings, I haven't been able to get a hoagie or sub that comes anywhere near it.
I was in Philadelphia one night with a friend that lived there, and I got a cheese and steak sandwich from one of those store fronts where you ordered and stood at a stand in front and ate your food. I have not had a sandwich like it anywhere. And the bagels!!! Gotta stop, I'm making myself crazy.

Gio's on 301 makes good Italian subs, but they don't use mortadella (which is what I'm used to) and I don't think they offer a strip of anchovies over the top as an option (best way ever). You can ask them to heat it for you, otherwise it's a cold sub.

When Publix has it on sale ($8.99), I usually get a Whole Boar's Head Italian Sub with Genoa Salami, Tavern Ham, Cappacolla, Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato on Italian 5 Grain Bread with Onions, Jalapeno Peppers and Boar's Head Sub Dressing. It ain't Defonte's, but it's a nice sandwich.

I ate at the Hat in Brea California loved it and a small order of fries was a lunch sack. Supposed to be an authentic N.Y. Style pastrami took my boss who was from New York and he said it was not. Supposed to be on marbled rye with Russian dressing. Goes to show no matter how good if not from home wont be as good.

The best place that we found is Publix. They make it in front of you . Their bread is crusty and chewy and that’s how it should be. We ordered from Jersey Mikes once. Worst sandwich ever! Exactly, Boars Head went from A+ to Failure after epic disgraced filthy Plant disclosures.

After following exactly what went on in those Plants, I'll never, ever again order Boars Head from Publix.

Recently, they said it was fixed, which was a blatant lie, as they were forced to close again for the same multitude of reasons.

Publix Brand isn't very good either, but their stockpile is gone because no one is buying BoarsHead anymore.

Yesterday, at Colony, the only type of Publix luncheon meat was Hot Ham, which is nasty and Sweet Ham which sounds nasty.
Good luck continuing the tradition of making good Italian sanwhiches at home.

Boars Head luncheon meats and cheeses were packed full in the deli cases for anyone brave enough.

It was a thing a little italian pizza/sub shop used to do in Brighton, MA. Mortadella, genoa, hot capicolla, provolone, two anchovies making a stripe across the top, heated in the pizza oven until the edges of the bread turned brown and the cheese was melted, then topped with olive oil, vinegar, oregano, and hot pepper relish. The bread came from an italian bakery in the North End, they delivered it fresh out of the oven every morning.

Jersey Mike’s is good if you don’t know what good is. If you do, then you know it’s a pale imitation.

If you wrote Subway, you should be disqualified from any further comment on this topic.

Gio’s is ok, but their bread is not up to par. And it’s all about the bread.

The hunt continues for me. At some point I’ll go and try that place in Clermont that was mentioned. And I guess there’s some Italian markets in Tampa that maybe we get to at some point to try.

I am from Atlantic City and have never found anything similar to the White House's subs here. Half the problem is the bread.
The only bread I've found to be similar is at Publix whose subs are pretty decent. You should try them because you can tell them exactly what you want on it and how you want it made.
Their Italian sub is around $10.00 for a whole one.

Once you put all the stuff on a Publix sub, I fail to see the reason to pay extra for Boar's Head meat.

We bring food to some shut-ins when we visit our place in TV.
Last month they suggested Jersey Mikes so we brought home subs for 6, they, us, guests.
Mine was 2 for the price of one - my first and last.
Not just the worst excuse for a sub in my 65 years of Subs, Hoagies, Grinders, depending non region, but the worst excuse for anything I've ever eaten.
We collectively agreed.
Not because the group was spoiled and hailed from DC, Philadelphia, and Boston, but just plain lousy.Oversize white bread, they wouldn't toast it since there was tuna( duh, Subway toasts then adds the tuna and non-toastables)
high scores for indigestion (within minutes) lowest score for taste, looks, palatability, texture.
We'd have to be on a desert island to get one again.
I had to laugh to keep from crying.
We've had far better food from Subway except for the one in Sumter landing - hope that place got better.

Jersey Mike's isn't known for its tuna. And they have a few different varieties of bread. It sounds like you just made some poor choices and are upset about it. My first sub ever came from the first Subway ever, in the Bridgeport CT area where they were founded. I grew up on Subway subs. And I say - as someone who's been eating Subway subs since around 1968 (they were founded in 1965), they're not all that great. They're just convenient. Jersey Mike has fewer condiment options, but they have hot relish, which Subway lacks. Their pickles are also MUCH better, crisper and more flavorful rather than just a bite of limp, slightly crunchy vinegar.

Also, Subway doesn't have a grill at all. Jersey Mike's makes pretty decent steak and cheese subs. Subway's "hot" subs are all pre-cooked and simply convection-heated til the cheese melts and the edges of the bread turn brown.

Neither of them make "good" Italian subs. They make "edible" Italian subs.

Jersey Mikes has several bread choices. Sorry you picked one you didn't like...

Can not find any down here. I am talking like the white house in Atlantic city. Fresh Italian meats, oil not mayo, the whole deal. Please help my wife and I out. Merry Christmas.

If you think Gio’s is worth a try go to Roberto’s - it’s closer, the ingredients exactly the same. The 2 brothers use the same food suppliers. A decent sandwich, just not what you describe. Roberto’s food better, his daily specials worth a look.

AUTHENTIC? Means 100% Italian. That means that if it isn't made by an Italian in Italy, of all Italian products, at best, it is only a good approximation. Even as one travels throughout Italy, not just the sandwiches, but all food will vary.

I think the OP was pretty clear he was talking about Italian cold cuts and he explained exactly the type of sub. My grandmother, who immigrated to Boston from Genoa, would consider her sandwiches authentic Italian. I've never been to Italy but had plenty of authentic Italian subs.

Made from products at grocery store now. Butcher shops are pretty rare nowadays.

Drive 90 miles(one way) for a sub?

Like at my age I going to drive 90 miles in horrific traffic just get sandwich/sub or

sandwiches are called by many names, including:
Sub: Short for "submarine sandwich"
Grinder: A New England term for a hot sub sandwich
Hoagie: An Italian-American term that originated in South Philadelphia
Wedge: A term that may have originated in Yonkers, New York
Blimpie: A brand name that became synonymous with sub sandwiches in Hoboken
Spuckie: A Boston term for an Italian sub sandwich
Hero: A term used to describe a sub sandwich
Torpedo: A term used to describe a sub sandwich
Italian: A term used to describe a sub sandwich

Anyone from the east side of Pittsburgh PA knows the still famous Triangle Bar and Grill in Swissvale, as they made/make fantastic Italian subs (not to mention Vincents Pizza for great pizza) !

Sorry. This is central Florida, not the Eastside of Pittsburgh. To get what you like "back home", you gotta go back home.
Too many people travel (not just to TV) and are incensed when things aren't "like back home". The food around the world is different. Accept it. Eat it! 😁😋😬🤢🤮🤬😊🙂

One would think - that SO MANY of us in The Villages come from "UP NORTH" - that there'd be a pretty significant interest in diverse food types, and state specialties. People who lived in Illinois and surrounding states would appreciate a Chicago Dog and deep dish pizza. There are thousands of people in the Villages who come from Illinois and surrounding states. People who grew up and lived in New England and New York (which is an honorary New England state, if not technically) would know and appreciate real maple syrup on pancakes, thin-crust wood-fired pizza with charred crust-bubbles, and hot wings actually called Buffalo Wings. There are thousands of people living in The Villages from New England, New York, and surrounding states that would have experienced these things and enjoyed them.

People from the New England/New York states and the west coast, California, Oregon, and Washington State, would ALL know and appreciate and pay for healthy wholesome foods made with fresh fruits and vegetables - not "fake meat analogues" with overprocessed sauces but instead, "genuine bean burgers" and falafels and rich hearty vegetable stews.

People from both coasts also love cultural diversity. There are only two taquerias within this 70-square-mile parcel of land. That's really sad. There is NO Indian restaurant at all. There is NO middle-eastern restaurant at all. MOST people in the Villages come from the combination of the west and east coast of the country. And MOST of them have experienced cultural diversity in their foods. You'd think the Villages would want to cater to that, and welcome that. But no. They prefer vanilla and white bread. They prefer the same conformity in food preferences as they do in landscape design.

Rather than embrace the differences that make us all so interesting, they'd prefer to homogenize us and make us all the same.

OK……..been lots of new types restaurants open around villages and lots have closed. As far as white bread I like Sara Lee and clover valley.. wonder bread IMO stale as McDonald’s buns. No wonder…:icon_bored:

Italian sub sandwich. Some are better than others. Which is best depends solely on your taste.
That being said, it is still a sandwich, and, while good (usually), they are hardly gourmet or Cordon Bleu cuisine. MHO.

"authentic Italian cold cut Subs?"
If you wish "authentic Italian" I would suggest a trip to Italy. Their subs are probably "authentic."

"Subs" are an American tradition and can only be called Italian because of the type of meats and cheese,
not because they originated in Italy.

Why not make the bread, too? That way you know it is genuine, authentic, imitation, Italian style, Florida baked bread. American made Italian style (whatever that means) meats and cheeses. You can enhance the entire experience by shouting at one another with a bad Italian accent while you listen to Dean Martin sing Volare'.
Hey, cheaper than a trip to Milano.
"Asamatta you, aa? Gotta no reespect, aa! Shudduppa you face! " (Anyone remember that song?) Couldn't be Louis Prima.

Momma mia! I love it.

Have you tried Gio's in Oxford near the post office ? I'm not Italian, but our friends who are from Italy and come to their villa here 3-4 times a year say the deli there does sell a lot of the meats and cheeses they get in Italy, and they make subs to your order with oil or whatever you order.

Interesting read to see what all the curmudgeons say about Italian cold cuts. OP never asked for meat and sub to be made in Italy....but referenced White House which is in Atlantic City New Jersey....not City of Atlantis. The real and only answer is there is no place like White House and not having been there for 10 years, I couldn't even claim they are still actually as good. We all have fond memories from our pasts that can never be exactly reproduced here. Find what floats your boat and try to make it something you enjoy now. OP I believe you got good recommendations for Gio's Deli in Oxford. Gio is an Italian immigrant and his offerings are loved by many. We enjoy his meatball Subs and his occasional Pre Fixe dinners. If you're jonesing for a cold cut then the Pub sub recommendations should be tried or you're missing out.....Boars Head Deli sauce (sub oil) and Boars Head dill pickles along with everything you choose on your sub will make you very happy. I recommend the Italian 5 grain bread and 1 whole sub should be enough for 2 of you

Went there once. They put us in the back. Food was OK, imo, but not great. Noisy, questionably clean. I'll spend my $$ elsewhere.

We drive to Mazzaro’s to stock up on their sweet Italian sausage (won’t buy it anyplace else). While there, we eat lunch from
their deli and buy numerous other Italian specialties that we can’t find elsewhere. Worth the trip, bring a cooler!

Same here we tried Geos once, which made our Tampa trips the only place to buy anything Italian. Their lasagna soup in the frozen or cold section is good for quick meal. We stock up on deli, sausages, breads, 2 wines not available anywhere else. Then lunch and fridge and freezer happy until the next monthly trip.
