View Full Version : Nearly run over by passing golf cart

Yikes golf cart drivers are stupid! We were walking on the left for on coming cart traffic on the path between Everglades and the Water Lilly bridge, and an Atomic cart was passing another cart with a 1 mph differential maybe, from behind and no beep, and nearly took out my arm. Heard a cart but never expected two abreast from behind.
“Can’t slow down for a walker in case of a stumble, ‘cause i would lose all that time/distance of trying to pass that slower cart!”
Welcome to Snowbird Season!

Maybe not. I've encountered boneheaded cart jockeys around here in July as well as in January.

Happens all over the villages MMP's. The majority running late for their tee time or had a little sauce on the way, or a combination of both. You'll observe most arriving to the starter shacks flying into the parking areas nearly running into people.

trying to pass another cart when the speed differential is insignificant is a sure sign.

Driving a golf cart on an MMP like you drive a car. . . because golf courses don't have lanes like cars drive on.

And August through November. Every bank teller, waitstaff, cashier deserves a raise for having to listen that extra 10 plus minutes of that person’s life.
To the 10 people behind them, a extra bonus for patiently waiting, and not run out of the store screaming into the night.
In November a lady in front of us felt the need to give us a dissertation on her medical problems. I felt bad but a minute in, I used sign language, to startle her into reality. It worked she huffed and turned to the person in front of her. Apologies to that person.

There was a guy who drove his pickup into the golf cart parking section in the Spanish Plaines strip mall last year (where there's Publix, the FedEx store, Koyame, and Subway). I was leaving Subway when he pulled in and I had to yell at him about it. He's like "well I'm handicapped." And I told him "this isn't handicap parking. It's a parking lot for golf carts and you're blocking it with your truck." He didn't like that. He was dropping something off at FedEx. So I told him to go park in the regular lot, and I'd give him a ride with his box to the golf cart lot with my golf cart, and then deliver him back to his car. Turned out he was perfectly capable of carrying the box himself from a parking space in the regular lot 50 feet away from the FedEx door.
But he was a special boi, mama's very special boi.

Unfortunately, it's not confined to The Villages. A few months ago at MCO a person was wheeled to the baggage claim area next to me by an attendant. When he saw his bag, he literally jumped out of his wheelchair, grabbed it and RAN to the exit faster than I could. There should be a large fine for falsely utilizing a service that others truly need, not to mention a permanent place in group 9 boarding for the rest of his life.

Congratulations for walking on the correct side of the path. I use that often. I estimate that only about 75% of walkers do so.
Walkers probably are not aware of how difficult that path is for driving just after the sun has come up when headed to Everglades. The sun glare is terrible. So watching out for your own safety is really important. I often see walkers who even though they are on the correct side are so focused on their cell phones that they are unaware of traffic. Are they also snowbirds and / or stupid?
Glad you were not hit. Practice personal safety, regardless of your activity.

Being respectful, I'd like a little more info from the author. What time of day was this? Was it dark? Did you have reflective/bright colored clothing on? Were you walking on the side of the path against traffic? Did you have earbuds in or could you hear oncoming traffic?
I ask all these questions because although I'm a careful driver, IMHO, I travel to courses in the early morning when it's still dark. You would not believe the number of walkers that are clothed in dark colors, no lights or reflective material, and sometimes walk with the flow of traffic instead of against it. I just cannot understand why they wouldn't make themselves visible and be aware of their surroundings. I mean, a golf cart isn't going to win against an auto, and a walker isn't going to win against a golf cart. Please be careful out there people.
Staying safe and being respectful goes both ways...

Reason why I walk facing the upcoming traffic. Still, twice I found myself having to jump off the multi path because of an upcoming driver driving too closed for comfort. Once I heard the passenger yelling at the driver that he just almost ran over a pedestrian.

I walk that route a lot, from the vicinity of Savannah Center to the Publix off Buenos Aires. And yes...I've seen some pretty off-the-wall driving. There's an old guy on a bike whose eyes are glued to his cell phone mounted on his handlebars: I give him a lot of room as he doesn't seem to be watching for walkers. Also, there's a guy with a blind cane attached to the back of his cart who drives about 5 mph...haven't seen him in awhile.

Not always as simple as you make it sound. Depends alot on landscaping.
Anyway, why can't cart drivers accept some responsibility for creating a danger to walkers, bikers and others? What makes cart drivers feel they have the right to shove others off to the side onto wet grass or mud. Seems rude to me. Cart driver can wait in their nice, comfy seat until safe to pass. Curtesy goes both ways, you know.

Yes, that was unexpected and I would walk like you did facing oncoming traffic. But now considering the unexpected danger, if i were you, I would buy one of those mirrors that attach to glasses or sun glasses which allow you to see behind you. The extra insurance against getting hit would be worth the price of the mirror attachment and the time involved getting used to it.
.....Think of it as a warning because another driver might be passing and lose control and take out more than just an arm.
........Also, this incident brings up the question of whether it would be safer if ALL golf carts had the SAME top speed. It could be 20 or 25 MPH. Because when there are carts with a multiple of TOP SPEEDS, then you assure a situation where PASSING is unavoidable. And your NEAR miss shines a spotlight on the problem.

Same happened to my husband but the guy didn’t like the fact he cut the gap on the security arm and slammed on his brake for my husband to rear end him. Jerks are everywhere . He was in a El Camino . Needles to say you do take your life in your own hands around here some shouldn’t be driving a tricycle never mind a vehicle with a motor. Heavens to mergatroid. A cart almost ran you over on a cart path. BAN CARTS!
Actually this is a very fine topic because it presents a typical Villages problem and some people can suggest ways to mitigate that problem. For example, they could build wider passing lanes for the Golf Carts every mile or two. The walkers could wear mirrors to see traffic behind them. The golf carts could all be required to have the same top speed to discourage passing. There could be cameras and any cart driver endangering a walker or a cyclist could get a ticket - if license plate numbers were required. And there have been other ideas and suggestions.
.......I think that it is pathetic that ANY bicyclist would have to sell their bike because Golf Cart drivers are dangerous and obnoxious. When it comes to being environmentally friendly, a bicycle is using no gasoline and giving off zero pollution. i believe that gas (not electric) golf carts pollute more than automobiles and trucks. So, in my opinion, bicyclists and walkers DESERVE their OWN trails more than golf carts, which are made to drive on golf courses and are NOT made for personal STREET transportation. They have too high of a center of gravity and weak brakes and shock absorbers. They are just not made for the street. Today there is an article about one golf cart knocking another golf cart over on its side and hospitalizing the driver. I would imagine that the high center of gravity and weak brakes of one or both of those carts played a role in that accident. And I know of a nurse in The Villages that speaks about the GREAT number of head injuries that occur from golf cart accidents (and not on the golf course where they belong).

The problem is that SOME can go WAY more than 20 MPH. Some have their top speed limiter CRANKED way up to 35 or even 40 MPH. Apparently there is about ZERO police enforcement of cart top speeds. Yet, today there is another case of a cart hitting another cart and a serious injury to one driver.

I'd love to see a radar gun reading of a cart going 40. I've lived here and driven a golf cart for 11 years and maybe twice, MAYBE, I encountered one that appeared to be going about 30 based on speed differential. I can't imagine 40, ever. Yet it is one of your favorite repeat posts. Any proof, WHATSOEVER, of a cart going 40?

No radar gun, but driving on Hendry through Collier, the speed limit is 30. I was doing 30, per car speedo and a gc went by me pretty quick. Given that auto speed is usually 1 or 2 below reading, that cart was likely going over 30.

That's the point of TRAFFIC TICKETS. Ticket a few and the word spreads around and then everyone of the 150,000 will voluntarily change their illegal governor speed back to 20 MPH. The same principle as people knowing that they would go to jail for a LONG time for murdering someone. You don’t really think that would happen do you?

Not always as simple as you make it sound. Depends alot on landscaping.
Anyway, why can't cart drivers accept some responsibility for creating a danger to walkers, bikers and others? What makes cart drivers feel they have the right to shove others off to the side onto wet grass or mud. Seems rude to me. Cart driver can wait in their nice, comfy seat until safe to pass. Curtesy goes both ways, you know.
The vast majority do exactly as you've described...
Unfortunately, there are jerk golf cart drivers and jerk pedestrians that some posters feel the need to harp about...

Yikes golf cart drivers are stupid! We were walking on the left for on coming cart traffic on the path between Everglades and the Water Lilly bridge, and an Atomic cart was passing another cart with a 1 mph differential maybe, from behind and no beep, and nearly took out my arm. Heard a cart but never expected two abreast from behind.
...
Why play chicken with a golf cart. Walk on the oncoming side to see the carts coming, take one step to the left onto the grass. After the cart passes by step back on the path. Simple as that.
Did the original post mention "stepping into the grass" to avoid gettin hit, or did you not read it?

Since when does "top speed" = "driving speed"?
My car's top speed is something like 140 mph. I've never gone faster than 85 in it...
If you have someone whose golf cart is limited to 20-25 mph, and they are poking along at 10 mph, someone is going to want to pass them...
And yes, we should all walk around with mirrors surrounding our heads... :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Different day, same nonsense...
Rear view mirrors to walk? Is that your new talking point?
Aren't you supposed to be walking on the LEFT, FACING TRAFFIC?
How is a rear view mirror, clipped to your sunglasses, going to help with a cart coming directly at you?

Some people find it really inconvenient to follow along and consider context. They'd rather just interject snide remarks and "gotchas" so as to shut down conversation entirely. And some folks aren't forum-savvy enough to understand how multi-quotes work (some folks don't know how ANY quotes work, which is evident by the myriad of broken quotes throughout this forum).

To the OP situation, walking on the left to oncoming vehicular traffic is PROPER on streets. However, walking on the right is "better" on MMPs, even if TWO carts are on your left. But, that's my own safe opinion.

The fault is not necessarily Snowbirds....but the fact that there are MORE carts on the paths; everyone is in a hurry to be first. I bike daily and always announce when passing a pedestrian who is walking with traffic. Many use ear pods or headphones and don't hear me, so it is essential to ride cautiously around them. Sometimes I listen to books while biking, and use just one ear pod or make sure transparent setting is engaged in order to hear golf carts as they whiz by. Remember that there is a law for motorized vehicles to give at least 3 feet clearance to a non-motorized bicycle or pedestrian and should pass only when safe. On El Camino Real, I once saw a golf cart almost flatten a guy walking towards traffic as it was passing me on my bike. The pedestrian screamed bloody murder and the golf cart driver did actually make a U turn to... perhaps apologize? Don't see much evidence of regret in golf cart drivers very often, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

I blow through stop signs at full speed on my bike when all these conditions are met:
1. I'm in the process of going uphill OR
1a. The other side of the intersection is the beginning of an incline.
2. There is no one else coming on any side of the intersection.
I also do the following, when there is traffic at a 4-way intersection:
I wait until ALL cars have passed before riding through. If someone tries to wave me on, I get off my bicycle completely and look away from whoever tried to do that.
Reason for that: YOU might want to wave me on, but the person who was at the other side of the intersection before YOU got there, might not. I don't care who has the right of way. To me - the person who can kill me easiest has the right of way.

Well, it was good advice “just step off in grass” but in the op case they was on bridge or close to entry where that wasn’t option. The cart should NOT be passing on bridge or on approach to bridge where it’s narrowed or dangerous due to limited visibility.
IMO that was point of OP post and the added “just step off path” was unrelated good advice cause majority of walkers walk HOGGING path or diamond lanes putting themselves in potential danger from sun glare, a pillar blind spot and dozen other issues. The rule states walk facing traffic on edge of street/road. MMP is a road diamond lanes are roads. But I this case the op was doing everything right and golf cart driver was WRONG.

The OP stated they were between Everglades and the Water Lilly bridge. That is two miles of path; it does have a bridge but the OP never stated they were anywhere near that bridge.
The OP could not "just step off in the grass" because the OP never saw the cart coming because the OP was walking facing traffic while the cart was approaching him from behind. The OP never expected a cart approaching from behind him to enter the lane adjacent to him and get that close to him.
Had the cart been in its own lane and approaching the OP from the other direction then he would have seen it and perhaps he would have "just stepped off into the grass." He never had that chance, he never saw the cart, it approached from behind him.

I'm sure there isn't a single golf cart driver who would happily tolerate THAT if they were stuck behind me.
Do you mean the tunnel under Morse that is right by the Virginia starter shack and intersects the MMP just north of Odell and west of the clubhouse? If so, I drive that frequently and don't see any issues with it at all.

The street where I live is "SPEEDERS HEAVEN". The street sign says 20 MPH, but about 50% of cars and trucks exceed that. And about 40% of the Golf Carts (the drivers must have delusions of race car grandeur) go by at speeds over 30 MPH.
........Note: Since I am often in my front yard I can hear WHICH GOLF CARTS are speeding by how loudly their engines are straining. Also , I notice older Golf Carts leave the SMELL of unburned gasoline behind them - especially the ones going over 20 MPH. Also I " pity the fool" that buys a USED golf cart that had its speed jacked up because the engine will likely be ruined.

Why play chicken with a golf cart. Walk on the oncoming side to see the carts coming, take one step to the left onto the grass. After the cart passes by step back on the path. Simple as that.
You need a mirror on your glasses to see a golf cart passing another golf cart so that you have time to step onto the grass when you are walking facing traffic.

When did you get your eyes and ears calibrated to judge speed? Where did you get this certification?

I don't see much evidence of regret in cyclists when they blow through stop and yield signs or go around an entrance gate at full speed, or is regret an emotion that should only apply to cart drivers?

Yikes golf cart drivers are stupid! We were walking on the left...
I think I need to stay indoors to stay alive!
I was out running this morning along a residential street, on the left, facing oncoming traffic, when a lady in a golf cart maintained her speed and position along the edge of the road, forcing me to jump into a neighbor's garden.
I guess she had forgotten she had a steering wheel.
A cyclist going the other way made some amusing comment about the driver, so maybe she has seen it all before, too.

Some will not get over no matter what’s ahead. Good example couple years ago company was taking tree out, had cones out and person stopping traffic due to pull rope across one lane. Somebody ignored all that and ran into rope flipping golf cart.
Then there sun flare angle of view that blocks out. Early morning and late evening when sun low especially bad. done good getting out of harms way. I don’t hesitate to get off MMP or diamond lane even if I have to climb tree, dive in bush, or climb fence. In the OP case unless he was walking side by side (which don’t seem to be case) he was blind sided from rear by some passing on narrow stretch of road.

[QUOTE=Topspinmo;2399192]Well, it was good advice “just step off in grass” but in the op case they was on bridge or close to entry where that wasn’t option. The cart should NOT be passing on bridge or on approach to bridge where it’s narrowed or dangerous due to limited visibility.
.../QUOTE]
Not familiar with that area I have no need to be down there. Wether it was on bridge, close to bridge, or far far away from bridge it narrow section. Which golf cart driver should have not been passing that was point of OP post, he was doing everything right, walking facing traffic, walking on left edge of road. Far cry from most out walking two or more abreast with traffic approaching hogging road, path, sidewalk ect… putting themselves in harms way, then whining about golf cart driver and bicycles.

Speaking of, got passed this morning on MMP by electric bicyclists going at least 28 maybe more? How do I know this I was going 22 and he flew past me. Course he had his legs in slow motion like he was peddling. I’ll give him credit he did slow down before ran stop sign to maybe 15 cause of vision problem.

Perhaps, since this means so much and gets your undies all in a bunch, consider this. Apply and get accepted at the police academy, then join the force in your local jurisdiction, hang out on the street upon which you live and give out all the tickets you like. Be sure to nail all those golf carts going 20.1 mph

what makes yours legal and mine not?
Mine is not capable of exceeding 20mph. That makes it officially, legally, a designated "golf cart." There are LSVs, which are "Low Speed Vehicles." Those are golf carts that have specific criteria met, including being set to go UP TO 25mph but no faster. They have to be registered and insured and are no longer considered "golf carts" by legal definition (even though they're basically the same vehicle with some tweaks).
Any golf-cart-base-vehicle that can go in excess of 25mph, is not lawful in the State of Florida. It's not allowed to exist here. You can drive it on your own private property, or I guess tow or otherwise transport it to a private field and have fun with it, but it isn't allowed on any public road in the state.

Do you mean the tunnel under Morse that is right by the Virginia starter shack and intersects the MMP just north of Odell and west of the clubhouse? If so, I drive that frequently and don't see any issues with it at all.
Odell is a circle and crosses Morse in two places. I don't know the name of the golf course, I don't play golf. But if you're coming south on the Morse MMP from Sumter, and go down the hill where there's a golf cart tunnel to your right at the bottom of the hill, and then the road goes back up again and curves left, with Mallory Hill Country Club on the left, it's THAT spot there that I'm talking about. I see people coming out of that tunnel expecting to take a left, and sometimes they don't stop right away. It scares the bejeezus out of me when I'm coming from Sumter to Odell at that spot, I always worry they'll just keep going and I'll ram right into them. *I* should have a stop sign there. And so should people coming FROM the Mallory parking lot area on Odell, who are on the golf cart path heading north or heading through that same tunnel to go to the other side of it.
Because it's a 3-way stop in a sort of "Y" shape - I think it should work somewhat more like a roundabout. If you're taking a RIGHT at the intersection, no matter where you're coming from - you can go. If you're taking a LEFT at the intersection, no matter where you're coming from, you must stop and yield to whoever is taking a right. Since - there is technically no "straight" - the road curves at that spot, with the tunnel exit in the middle of the curve.

Who does have the stop sign there, the people coming from Mallory or the people coming out of the tunnel? Most tunnels have the stop sign but at least one, heading north from Pinellas and turning right under Morse, has a stop sign on the path coming from Moyer.

Yep, that's the place. And sorry, but I don't see any problem there, other than the problem that exists at every tunnel exit----people don't stop at the stop line and stick their nose out too far or give the appearance that they are not stopping at all. But that's a driver problem, not a MMP problem.

The stop sign, as usual, is at the tunnel exit. As far as the other tunnel you referenced, at Sarasota, yes, the stop sign is on the path from the driving range. I believe this is because the route through the tunnel and heading north is considered the main MMP, while the path joining from the right is a "spur" to the driving range and then over to Moyer. Once that path joins Moyer there is no longer any MMP anywhere in that section of TV---just diamond lanes, so I suppose that is the explanation.

That's nice. Let's just hope your attorneys never have to prove you were "dead right".
(And we wonder how many trillions of dollars are wasted on lawyers in our litigious society)
I also have to wonder about the mindset of anyone that "still has Dan Newlin

You don’t really think that would happen do you?
I know that there are a lot of rollover accidents by golf carts that have their governor jacked up. I see women in golf carts going 30 MPH in a 20 MPH residential street. I would bet that her husband had their golf cart governor jacked up and she is fine with speeding everywhere. Well, I will blame the husband if the wife gets drunk and turns the golf cart over and breaks her neck. Laws can be enforced ........if there is a WILL there is a way. The people above the Police are too busy to worry about the SAFETY of some dingbat, little, nobody Villager.

After speaking to Pat Breedan, Adam Dodge and Bob Seimer of the Sumter County police department, they realize there are problems with Over medicated, drunken drivers and just careless morons. I get the same answer, the Sumter County police is under staffed and not enough resources.
Captain Siemer and Sqt. Dodge are avid riders in the villages also.
I have seen presents of police golf cart north of 466 on the multiuse path once by Sqt. Dodge 4 months ago, but never seen them south of 466. I was also told that due to the multiuse path being on Villages private property that their authority is limited unless there is an accident or drunken or impaired driver. Folks have your head on a swivel my husband has been hit twice in the last 5 years!
Stay Safe
I would like to ask the question........why IS the Sumter County Police Department understaffed? When the Villages can put up some of America's largest Christmas trees at all the squares. And WHY do all the roundabouts have to be adorned with annual flowers (with their HIGH upkeep costs) instead of perennials flowers or bushes? In general, The Villages are more about FORM than FUNCTION and that is a BIG problem. And that is WHY the Police in the whole Villages are understaffed. I guess i answered my own 1st question.

I learned some things from this thread. Such as that the Sumter Co. police dept. is UNDERSTAFFED. I SUSPECTED that, but was unsure. Understaffed Police seem to make for a bad combination when mixed with elderly people in dense communities driving DRUNK after nightly entertainment events. Another problem with understaffed Police is that The Villages are a potential soft target for insurrection violence.
