Suggestions on where to stay in FL, Keys area that is reasonable. Don't want to pay 500/600 for a motel per night. Thanks

Nothing is reasonable this time of year. The Keys fill up quickly with snowbirds. I take my motor home down there on occasion and if you don't book a campground a year ahead of time, you're out of luck. And a campsite for 2 weeks in December is $2700. For a campsite.

I don't know if you are a Marriott person but an on-line check revealed the Courtyard Key Largo was booking at $225 or 30,000 points per night in January. That is the cheapest I saw. Seemed reasonable.

Although this is top of the season, there are still places that are reasonable. Our favorite is the Courtyard Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon. We have been going a couple of times a year for years now and love it. This time of year will run you about $300 a night for a week stay. The best part of this location is that it is an a little under an hour drive to Key West so you can go and spend a day in Key West and get out before the mobs of kids from Miami arrive.
There is also a great little dive called No Name Pub in Big Pine Key on the south side of the 7 mile bridge that is the typical Keys dive bar without the mainland lunatics. Not to mention that the fishing in Marathon is fantastic. Faro Blanco link below.
Have fun and stay out of trouble!

Having owned a condo and lived there full time 8 years I suggest you try one of the local rental agencies or an online rental service. You might get a better price as well as a whole place to yourself. You can cook for yourself and save money on restaurants etc. We lived in Key Colony Beach - halfway down the Keys - an easy drive to any of them.

Check the Sugarloaf Lodge, it is about 10 miles north of Key West but still reasonable even this time of year. Not a new facility but very decent for the price!

There used to be a hostel with private apartments in Key West. They had parking too. It is an adventure, but if cost is so critical, that is how we did it.

Don't go in July or August because that's lobster season. I would try to stay in the middle keys or just south of the 7 mile bridge. Look on **** when you can find some places that are 200 or 250 a night.
Stay away from Key West
