View Full Version : Electric recliner motor repairman?

We have a sofa with motorized recliners on each end. The motor stopped working (with the footrest stuck in the extended position) this past weekend & the store we bought it from won't repair anything more than a year old so we need to find our own repair service. Does anyone know someone who can repair or replace the motor for us?

I would attempt a DIY project. You can buy a replacement motor from Amazon and watch a YouTube video on how to install it.

I have helped a few neighbors with these. First, check the power supply, all the ones I have seen have a light (usually green) when the power supply is on and supplying power to the chair. The next item is the switches, I you are able you can swap switches, I have seen these fail. If can do both of these and the unit still does not work, then the motor unit has probably failed. The next trick will be to get to the bottom of the recliner to see the make and model number of the motor unit, an internet search (or Amazon) should get you to the exact same model unit. I would order a complete kit if available (power supply, switch and motor unit).

I do not carry parts in stock, but I should be able to disconnect the motor so the chair is back to upright position and then install the new parts when they arrive.

Thought my motor was dead on my chair, but found a switch for $15 on Amazon and bought it. Turned out it was the switch. It's not an exact replacement, would need to tear the chair apart since the switch is in the seat cushion but works great. It has a 6' cord and I keep it on the table next to me. You do need to check the current plug for the correct pin number.

Sort of unrelated ... but related.

I recent bought a powered reclining chair.

Probably one of the dumbest purchases of my entire life.

Trying to get out of a power recliner, without un-reclining it, is nearly impossible.

Sitting in the chair like an idiot, waiting for the chair to un-recline, is the longest 10-20 seconds of my life. Don't do it!!! Stick with "manual".

My recliner is 10 years old and I use it constantly. Never had a problem with the motor. Forget the manual . Some of them are almost impossible to operate.

Bruce MacDonald 978-430-3014. He is on NextDoor & is a retired upholsterer & does repairs on motorized recliners. He has excellent reviews from customers, including for repair of motored recliner.

Thanks for all of your suggestions! My neighbor's brother was visiting & between the 3 of us we got it working again. It was a bad switch plus a loose connection.

I know you are looking for a repair service and that is not me.

But I would ask some questions You mention that the motor stopped working. In my experience with my recliner, I found that there was no one motor as we normally think like a lawn mower etc. I found that each function of the recliner had what I will call an actuator. The actuator gets its signal from a controller or "Brain" and the Brain gets its direction from a switch or hand control. All of the preceding obtains their power from a Switching Power Supply plugged into the wall. And the wall outlet. My experience in chair failure includes failure of the Switching Power Supply due to a storm induced surge. This one was pretty simple. Electrical Storm, lights flickered etc., recliner no longer worked.
Next failure was a short causing no power getting to brain. Traced it down to a point were power wires entered through a support bracket.

I am not an electrician, but my gut would start looking at power issues first.
