The Cool kids at my school were the kids of very wealthy parents who were never at home, kids were brats, had amazing parties with live musicians at their place, lots of… etc. when they grew up some of them succumbed to all the indulgences and became bitter, some just stayed cool all their lives (like my hubby).

Depending if your birthday was in January or December, you might be 6 or more months older than those born in November or December. That almost a whole year older, was enough to make a serious difference in maturity in high school. This was especially significant for boys. Females tended to be 2 years more mature than boys, anyway. Also, only children were less socialized than children with multiple siblings. Also the jocks or cheer leaders in high school were often looked up to. So they were the "cool kids".
Family wealth was not such a factor when and where I grew up. Most every kid was basically middle class.
