Can anyone recommend a local repair person for a Whirlpool Microwave? The microwave makes a loud roaring noise when started.

Sounds like the fan may be the problem, I suspect that it will be less expensive to get a new microwave. IMHO, I would stick with the same brand, the reason being that the vent connection may be slightly different between manufacturers. I ran into this twice. If you do not have the original installation instructions, you may be able to find these online and compare to the new unit. Also, pay attention to the actual installation, 2 of these had the fan set for circulation back to the kitchen and NOT to the outside vent.

It may be worth getting a quote to repair it. A new one at Best Buy, including installation, will be about $900. If you try a DIY installation, you will most likely need two people to lift it into place.

We had a magnetron die on our microwave. I saved it to repair it, buy a new magnetron, replace it.
But after saving it, and then looking at repairing it, we decide to just junk it. .

Not that it would be cheaper, but just too much of a hassle for the expense, $150 for the part, $100 + for the labor to repair. .
Resale value = $100 . . .

A loud fan would not be in a junk/replacement category, as the noise may or may not be the fan motor.
But if it is, then hopefully the repair cost is small

So, I called Whirlpool. They told me for the model number we have , I would need to pay a minimum of $374 UP FRONT to have someone just to come out. If it can be fixed for less than or equal to $374(about half the cost of a new unit), they will fix it. However, if the repair estimate is more than $374, they will not fix it on the initial visit. They would give me a credit for $239. ($135 minimum charge per visit) All repairs are paid in advance. Any repair would be guaranteed for 30 days. They also had an alternative to buy an extended 12 month warranty which would then cover the current repair. It was obviously even more expensive due to the 12 month coverage. At these prices, why get anything repaired.

Just curious, but why did you call Whirlpool? I think a local repair company will come out and give you a quote for a lot less money. You may need to pay a service charge. If you don't like the quote, you can buy a new microwave. Dave's Appliance offered to replace my microwave door switches for $150.

Never had an appliance repair in the Villages and did not know who was reputable and trustworthy. Did not want to just randomly select a company. Thought Whirlpool would refer me to a local authorized repair company.

The only Whirlpool warranty service that I am aware of is available from Fields Appliance located in Orlando. But, if the microwave is out of warranty, I would use one of the independent repair companies in The Villages. Dave's Appliance is one of the best. When you are looking at a $900 new appliance price tag, it is worth getting a quote to repair it.

These microwaves are cheap and not worth putting a dime into them. We’ve replaced every appliance since moving into our new home. A good appliance is going to cost you $2000-$3000. Unless you just want to heat up tea or leftovers, a good microwave is going to cost you close to a $1000 plus installation. Yes, you have to match the vent hole in the back of the microwave if your microwave is vented and over the range.

I just went online and over the range Whirlpool Microwave are in the $400 range, I agree with some of the other postings that it would be smart to purchase a new one.

TOTV is the wisdom of the crowd, where the combined years of experience can be measured in centuries.

Read here often or ask questions here, and you can be assured you aren't the first one with the problem, and there is a huge coalition of the willing to offer help and advice, most with personal experience.

And just ignore the naysayers that gathering information from this web site shouldn't be read for professional advice. True that you should check with a professional if you aren't familiar with the topic, but there are lots of retired professionals here who will get you pointed in the right direction and be very close to the professional answer

not worth fixing. You can get a new one fairly cheaply and installed for you. Go to MVB Appliance store in Leesburg on 441. Was much cheaper there than Best Buy or HD or Lowes. Had the item in stock, delivered the next day. Great company to work with.

You are correct. My estimate was based on a built-in microwave, not an over-the-range type. But you still need to add installation, haul away and sales tax to the basic cost. This adds about $300. Most people are not capable of installing an over-the-range microwave. I still think it is worth getting a quote to repair it, especially if it only needs a new fan.

Lowes still has our 8yr old whirlpool microwave in their store. It was on sale for just over $200. It looks like they may be discontinuing it. I would snatch one up and have Dave’s swap them out.

I had Dave’s appliance fix both my microwave and my dishwasher last year. Very professional and did a great job. I highly recommend.

I once asked Dave if he installs appliances and he said that he does not.

Cheaper and easier to replace it with a quality one. Appliances are made to only last 5 yrs max

I've replaced an over the range microwave with a buddy before. Easy. But at the cost that have been quoted on this thread, how about just buying a $100 one for the counter!

Search on YouTube what the issue is before you call a service person. It might be time to replace the unit.

You can buy new one for under 500 at Lowe's not worth to repair

Most kitchen appliances are not intended to be repaired any longer. Buy a new one with included installation and have them haul away the old one.

Don’t waste your time on a repaired microwave. Buy a new one and have it installed. Measure the old microwave first before going to Lowe’s or Home Depot. Some things are not worth the money to repair. Microwaves are one of them.

This is what we did.

When our microwave started having problems with the door (It thought it was open when it was closed and wouldn't work) I tore into it after watching some youtube videos. Got it working for a few weeks then it crapped out again. Bought a similar model (same manufacturer) at Lowes for just over $200 and was able to install it ourselves.

If you're talking a basic model to go over the range, replacement might be cheaper. If you're talking some kind of fancy 1000+ unit then maybe a once-over by somebody first would be worth it.

We had to rotate the fan during the install to get the air to go out the vent. It was pretty easy though.

Our Samsung Microwave Fan (built-in) started making noise last month. A New one from Best Buy was $199. So it’s hardly worth getting it fixed. Installed it myself in just a few minutes.

Amazon sells a vent fan for a Whirlpool microwave. Cost is about $29 plus shipping. To replace it, you would have to remove the microwave from its mounting and disassemble it. To install a new microwave you would still have to remove the old one from its mounting. So once it’s removed why not just go ahead and replace the fan?

Installed - heh. SO glad we have a countertop microwave. We paid under $200 for it, and when it starts to fall apart we'll just buy a new one. Installation instructions: remove cardboard protection and plastic coating on the glass turntable, and plug it in 6 inches away from the wall.

My wife and I replaced an over the stove microwave ourselves several years ago. Even though I'm fairly handy, I was a little nervous about juggling the old one out and the new one in. So, we covered the glass stove top with pillows in case it slipped out of our hands. In fact, I think we used enough pillows (couch cushions), so we didn't have to hold it in place while starting the mounting bolts We bought the same make but newer model#. Before buying I checked the weight of the boxed unit in the store. Mounting was very similar for new and old, and the unit comes with a mounting template. Had to drill a couple new holes in bottom of cabinet for the new mounting (mainly because the original mounting was not done correctly). It's best to have an extra set of hands but it took us less than an hour to do it. When finished, we high-fived and felt good about having done the job and saved hundreds.

Don't bother. Get a new one if outside warranty. You will pay more to have it fixed, i.e. labor and parts are probably more than a new one.

Everybody talks about the cheap appliances the Villages use. We got the upgraded appliance package in our home. Our microwave on sale at Lowes, Home Depot, and Best Buy are all sold for over $800 for the replacement. We loved the looks and features of our microwave.
Looking at Consumers Report Online, the reliability for Whirlpool over the range microwaves are better than almost all brands. I think the only one better is LG, and one of the worst was Samsung! Anyway, Not everyone gets the builder quality standard appliances! That being said, we are going to replace the Microwave.
