Noticed phone not charging so took it to my provider t mobile. Said port was damaged or dirty so told me to take it to Jacob’s computers on Main Street in wildwood . Said it was very dirty and worked about 10 minutes to clean it out. He made sure it was charging before I left and charged 10 bucks which I was happy to pay. It is located right off 466a, hang a left two blocks down on left. Address 106 main st. He said port gets dirty from those like me who keep their phones in your pants pocket and then jam charger into port.

Had the same problem due to dirt getting inside phone. 13 year old grandson immediately diagnosed problem and told me to buy wireless magnetic charger.

Ten bucks is a bargain. That being said, isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip probably would have done the job.

I take mine out of the case on occasion clean it and blow out the ports and speaker with a can of compressed air for keyboards and such. BTW, great idea for wireless charger provided you take it with you when you travel and don’t need the corded port.

That’s what we do. Although sometimes it’s gotten too wet inside and phone had to sit a while to dry out before it could be charged.

I wouldn't wipe rubbing alcohol from a q-tip into a charge port. Alcohol is corrosive and could destroy the connections. I'd recommend a couple of things.

1. Wash your pants more often.
2. Stop putting schmutz into your pockets.
3. Use compressed air to blow lint out of the port.
4. Don't use a q-tip and alcohol. Instead, get a makeup applicator. They look like q-tips but the cotton is compressed and firm, and points at the end. Dip it in a SMUDGE of water. That'd be a drop of water, that you've dragged onto a clean surface, and dip the end of the applicator into a part of that smudge, just to barely moisten the cotton. Insert the tip of the applicator into the center of the port, apply a tiny bit of pressure, and then quickly snap it back out again. Wait a few minutes for that to dry, and then use compressed air. The point is to loosen the dirt with the applicator, so that the compressed air can blow it out.

On several occasions that happened to me and I watched a video showing a little ball of lint being removed with a soft wood toothpick. I tried it very carefully and out came a little ball of lint. I have done this 3 times now and so far so good. I carry my phone in my pocket all day every day and that is how it picks up the lint.

Alcohol is not corrosive. Completely harmless, it's used to clean electronic parts. I invite anyone to look it up.

Compressed air may blow dirt deeper into your phone.

I periodically use the end of a paper clip to gently tease pocket lint out of the charging port. Its amazing how much stuff comes out of there and it makes a big difference when the phone stops charging.

I don't think a q-tip and isopropyl would get out the big lint balls that I am sometimes surprised to find. You need to dig.

Just get toothpick and pull out any dirt from charging port. If you have bottled air you can blow out the dirt. It will work after that normally.

An easy solution is to buy these silicone caps to protect the USB port.

Actually, the USB port is no longer needed. Any charging or data transfer can be done wirelessly. I use the Samsung Smart Switch app to transfer data between my smart phone and tablet, a wireless charger to charge the phone, and Bluetooth to listen to music. I never need to plug the phone into anything.

I have cleaned out lint many times from phone charger ports. I use fine tweezers and pick it out.
I don’t recommend using anything like a Q tip because there are fine contacts in there that could be damaged.
Blowing air or vacuuming it out could work if the debris isn’t packed tight.
If you don’t know what you are doing, paying the guy 10 bucks would be a good idea!

I enjoyed this thread immensely, bunch of old people talking about "cell phones". (I fall into the old guy catagory by the way). A few notes -
1. Most of this stuff is highly dependent on the phone you have.
2. Not all phones can use a wireless charger, even recent advanced phones.
3. Magnetic chargers are even more rare.
4. Most phones charge a lot faster on wired chargers than wireless, again, dependent on the phone.
5. How dirty do your pants have to be for this to happen? OMG!
6. It is doubtfull that you are going to hurt the phone with alchohol or copressed are. I like the paperclip idea the best.

Question for the OP - does the guy you recommended do screen repairs and battery replacements? Is he a Samsung or Google authorized dealer? Just wondering - thanks so much for sharing.

Amazon sells a pkg of port ‘plugs’ in various sizes & you check for lint before inserting the port plug. Similar to blocking outlets from children. You must remove the tiny port plug to use a charger other than the disk charger. Good luck.
