I'm watching The Players Championship on the Golf channel. This is one of my favorite golf tournaments that I think should be classified as a major tournament.
My one peeve this year is that they are using "featured groups" for the first 2 rounds. I don't know how many of these groups there are, but Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele were selected to play together. I don't know how the tee times were decided or if the players had any choice. But I think a golf tournament should be designed to treat all players equally, which means the tee times and pairings for the first 2 rounds should be determined randomly, not based on the players perceived abilities. Just my opinion.

Tee times are determined, not negotiated.
It's all about TV coverage and promotion.

Anyone else having issues with the Golf Channel pixelating?
Also, the phony looking desk(?) front NBC uses for the announcers looks ridiculous.

It’s all about generating viewership ratings and the associated revenue. People want to watch “featured groups”, and the associated increase in revenue benefits all the players through increased purses. All the golfers making the cut benefit and aren’t complaining about not being treated equally.

I was watching the golf tournament today.
The lead story was that Chandler Phillips, who is
a second-year Tour pro, made three eagles today!!
This was the first time that any player had made three eagles in one round at the Players!!

I’m actually having a bridge down south pixelated right now. My plan is to put it up for sale immediately afterward. PM me if interested.

But all players are NOT equal, their abilities are actual, not "perceived", and the viewing public wants to see the top players, not #865 in the OWGR unless he does something spectacular.

I think every golf tournament always uses featured groups. Today, Rory, Scottie, and Xander teeing off on the back nine at 8:24.
Non-featured groups are Alejandro Tosti, Isaiah Salinda, and Aldrich Potgieter. They have the last tee time today.
The first tee time yesterday was Chad Ramey, C.T. Pan, and Vince Whaley.

How do you know that every tournament uses featured groups? I have never noticed it being used, except at The Masters with the oldtimers.
And, what are the rules for featured groups? If Scheffler doesn't want to play with Schauffele, can he opt out of the featured group? I think the fairest way to arrange the pairings is by random selection. This is just my opinion.

I was at the Players yesterday and really enjoyed the format and venue. When you are walking the course you can follow your favorite players easier if they are grouped.
On a side note the villages should hire the groundskeeper they use. The grass was so nice it looked fake. So green and lush, no weeds or bare spots. Beautiful.

Featured Group Considerations: For Signature Events, which attract significant media and fan attention, the PGA Tour often adjusts pairings to create "featured groups" for broadcast purposes. This isn’t explicitly detailed, but it’s widely understood that top players—based on FedExCup ranking, OWGR, recent performance, or star power—are grouped together to maximize viewership.
The PGA Tour avoids stacking groups with players of vastly different skill levels.
Have you ever seen Tiger or Scottie or Rory playing with a Monday qualifier?
It is also economics. Featured groups have cameramen and announcers walking with them for the entire round. If the pairings were random, would you want to send cameramen and announcers to three groups to watch Rory, Scottie, and Xander? Or is it smarter to put them together? And it makes it easier for the fans on the course.

The Greens Fee is $500. per round plus $100. for a fore caddie plus a 10-20$ tip for getting a TPC Sawgrass Medallion...............and it doesn't include a hotel fee
At those prices the Villages could afford their greenskeeper............Money Talks

While not a major the Players annually has a top quality field. There are other tournaments that draw a top field annually such as the Memorial. Of course that has something to do with the players showing defference to Jacck. The Farmers at Torrey always had a strong field until the tour lessened purses at some tournaments while boosting it at others. They've had featured pairs at the Masters on their morning online coverage for years now. Some I haven't found very attractive.

I like seeing top player tee off together. Can compare their shot selection, clubs, scrambling, and especially driving distance. It’s always been about the money.

Too bad about the weather delay. Such a great tourney to watch on TV. When they restore the play, will be so interesting how the rain impacts the ball. And the delay on the players.
Must say I dislike how NBC has a small text showing that they are showing that they are replaying the second round or such. Used to have a large banner stating weather delay.,

Will play personally as long as the state of FL pays for it. . (lotto pays off)
or my wife passes away while I can still golf.
She wants her ashes spread on a favorite golf course, in my divots, so I can't think of a better place than the tbox and green at the 17th, as her final resting spot. It might be mine as well. . I can watch yearly from above, or I can haunt my favorites
