I had read to expect every type of home service representative to begin knocking on the door immediately after we closed on our new home in Well Point. Yesterday, with the help of three people we were unloading the 26’ UHaul when one of these representatives stopped. “Can I have 30 minutes of your time to tell you about XYZ?” Seriously? “Grab that furniture dolly, mate, and help off-load the base of the China cabinet,” I thought to myself. They did accept that I was busy and moved on, but wow!

I know, it's the height of stupidity. They give a built in excuse for the person not to speak and listen to them. Here's a tip sales folks, when you see the truck, make a note and come back 1 week later.

While annoying, predatory is maybe a bit presumptive. Better title might be "Incompetent Sales People" or "Annoying Sales People" or "Clueless Sales People". Yeah, that's the one Clueless...

When we purchased I heard the same story so I immediately put a "No Soliciting" sticker next to our doorbell and with the exception of a JW and 1 landscaper, we were not bothered from that point on. You don't need a large sticker a very small one next to the doorbell works very well.

I've always found, "No thanks, I'm Catholic" a good way to rapidly rid myself of J-Dubs.

The worst are the free roof inspection people. Have to firmly say no and stand by the door until they leave your property.

I did tell them I wasn't interested and asked politely that they not come back. I assume they mark it in their notes as they continued from time to time to talk with willing neighbors but never came back to our home.

They are not "predatory"...They are hustling to earn a profit.
Just tell them you are not interested.

That is when a large dog comes in handy.
But seriously most times a no thank you is enough, but if they persist or they are the 3rd one that day my politeness has been know to disappear.

There are "no soliciting" signs at some of the entrance gates, but they are not enforceable. State law does require a permit for door-to-door soliciting, so you can always ask to see their permit, and report them to law enforcement if they don't have a permit.

I always tell cold call sellers such as door to door folks that I charge $500/H for my time, cash up front, and then ask them how much of my time they would like. Then I cut them off on any further discussion without payment. Usually works great.

There are notices posted at gates, but a CDD has no enforcement powers. There must be city or county ordinances that could then be enforced by appropriate police. Sumter doesn't have such an ordinance.

Since the state law requires and allows a solicitation permit, it seems as though a local ordinance prohibiting solicitation may conflict with the state law.

Wow, we had the opposite experience when we closed on our brand new home two years ago. We had to call Nova several times just to get an appt for installation. Their main guy wasn’t good at all about returning calls, and they never solicited at our door. In fact, very few salespeople solicited here.

Tell them to post a yard sign on the street corner with everyone else’s eye sore yard sign that no one reads, steadfast mechanic, we buy records, paint your house, buy your house, move your junk, big refund for your taxes and the list goes on and on, LOL.
