As Sir Winston Churchill once so famously said "a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can get its pants on."
A person who drank a lot before retirement is probably going to drink a lot following retirement too, but I doubt the level of "drunkenness" is any higher in TV than an any other place of like size. But going back to Sir Winston's comment...reading stories about excessive imbibing (or wanton sex) is going to draw one heck of a lot more readers and listeners than articles about local churches filling shoeboxes for children's Christmas every year, or "Honey do" programs where parish members make themselves available, free of charge, to do tasks that fellow Villagers can no longer do on their own, or neighborhood co-operative pet-sitters or house-watchers, or efforts in conjunction with the Humane Society, etc.; all and a whole lot more of which take place in The Villages.
But, people enjoy reading about sleaze, so...

Or, it’s just some “apples” are different. Some can over drink and be fine, some have a personality you want to be far and removed from when they have even a couple. No one is the same.

I have yet to see any examples of extreme drunkenness nor encountered the myriad of swingers I was promised before coming here. I'm sure some exist but I'm also sure a lot of it is urban legend.
Or maybe I'm just hanging out at the wrong places.
It seems like the majority of unruly drunks highlighted in "the newspaper that shall not be named" are adult children living with their parents and/or residents of the areas just outside of TV.

Ahhh, of course. My assumption is always Sister in Law because I have several, but not a single son in law can I claim. While I did, indeed, assume, the reference was still vague. However, I should have gleaned the proper usage via context. Mea culpa offered.

I have people in my village that were already big on various things before moving to TV. Pickleball, golf, drinking, crafting etc. Almost all have taken their "hobbies" to unprecedented levels here.

In my opinion, there is far more drinking in The Villages than sex. I’m aware of two or three dozen swinging couples in The Villages. No, they aren’t usually interested in including a single guy. One of the difficulties is that people may come here as active swingers with a couple happy decades of doing that, but age catches up with them. By around seventy both the women and the men are less exciting to look at. With a swinging couple, both people have to be interested in getting together with another couple. That cuts the likelihood of a meeting of the, um, minds in half. Year be year this loss of interest grows. Meeting a couple for a swinging episode or hosting a swinging party gradually comes to seem like more trouble than it’s worth. Sometimes as they age, swinging couples get together to be around other people like themselves, yet they just eat and drink and chat without playing. There are of course variants. I knew a man who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for inventing a way to get plastic to carry electrical current, making possible all of our iPhones and iPads. At 79, he was still active, though the frequency had decreased. He still enjoyed the parties.
However, drinking pretty much maintains its appeal.

I saw a couple pull up to a village postal station yesterday. Both had an open beer can in their hand.
Yes it was beer. Didn't even have a foam thermo around it, right outa the cooler for a quick one.

Those items make people on both sides hateful and mean. None of us can do anything about them, so why bother talking about them?
Drinking and sex, well there are two universal topics that people can talk about. Very few ever get hateful over it and the conversations are usually very fun. :)

Ha Ha . . . Great Response!!! Since there isn't much crime here in The Villagers, much of the "Reporting" (I use the word very loosely) is about DUI's. I doubt that the consumption of alcohol in The Villages is worse than elsewhere and drug use here is lower than a lot of other areas.

Drunkenness IS that bad in The Villages, but the real problem is when they get behind the wheel. There is NOT enough Police presence to be a deterrent, so dangerous driving results.

I’ve come across this perception the OP mentions, myself. The doctor who was fired and started this rumor should be … So maybe it’s going on somewhere but my uncle and aunt in 32 years of living in TV never saw it or my parents for the 10 years they were here, or myself in the last 7 years never saw it. I’m not saying we live in a monastery - I’m sure we have less moral individuals here too - but this drop of poison has contaminated an ocean.
