Does anyone have suggestions or ideas on best route based on your experience? I pretty much expect to take I95 for the majority of the trip. We will be traveling with 2 cats (not going to be much fun) and expect to limit the daily drive to 6 or 7 hours out of expected 21 hours. With that in mind stopping in Florence SC is a possibility. Any ideas what the next stop could/should be? Best ideas in getting around/through NY area? Thanks in advance.

IMHO, I would head off 95 in Virgina and go towards Harrisburg PA, you avoid Baltimore and Wash DC, then you have several choices to continue north.

That's much of the route we take to upstate NY to avoid I95.

I would recommend taking 485W & N around Charlotte, unless you like traffic. Also watch rush hour there. That would miss about 19 miles of 77. It is about 5 miles longer. You'll most likely still hit some traffic on 77, but you should miss the worst by not going through Charlotte.

Thanks, never tried that. Going through Charlotte is typically the worst traffic of our entire trip, excluding unavoidable accidents and construction. Will try that next time.

The route everyone is giving you, is probably the best ... going through Harrisburg. I make the drive 4 or 5 times a year and there's no way I'd go near 95 North of Richmond. I won't drive through Richmond, Washington DC or NYC under any circumstances ... you never know what you're going to get there.
I think you may want to re-evaluate your ETA. I don't know where in Maine you're going, but there's no way to do it in 21 hours, that I know of. I doubt you can do it in less than 23-24 hours of Driving.
Waze says it's 20 hours to Portland & if you can get within 20% of Waze time on a trip that long, you're doing well. In the history of Waze, I don't think anyone has beaten their time on a trip over an hour.
This is my Route:
Take 301N to Callahan, FL then in Gross, Florida, catch I95N
Take I95N through to Virginia.
Take I295N around Richmond, VA and back onto I95N towards Fredricksburg, VA
You're now 800 miles from TV
From Fredericksburg, VA, take Rt. 17 North Towards Winchester, VA & Harrisburg, PA, which picks up 81N (goes across W. VA, MD & PA)
Take 81N towards Scranton and then take 84E towards Orange Lake/Newburg and Worcester, MA. Get on the Mass Pike in Sturbridge and take the Pike to 290 in Auburn/Worcester. From Worcester take 290 to I495 in Marlboro/Berlin. Take 495 North to 95N in Amesbury.
(You'll cross the Hudson River in Newburg, so you'll avoid everything in and around NYC)

We used to go to Fredericksburg and then cut across to 81 in Winchester. Then we tried taking 26 to 77 to get to 81 and found that to be a much better route. I95 is just too unpredictable once you get north of Georgia. There is no way we would drive I95 north of Fredericksburg!

We drove to MA for Christmas last year, we used to do it with one stop over night, then we went to two nights, this last trip we took three nights. Even that is too much for us now. Next years we'll fly (not ideal, but not much choice). ANd yes, we did the I26 to I77 etc every time.

95 is terrible. Stress inducing parking lot snarls and congestion with crazy drivers. Go up through PA. scenic, relaxing, safer.

Take 95 to 26 to 77 to 81 to 84 to 290 to 495 to 95
Go this way. This the best route. I suggest that you add a FREE app to your phone or iPad… it’s called iExit. It shows you gas stations, restaurants, and lodging on your trip as you drive. And it’s FREE … NO advertisements .. there are additional choices on the app. It shows you the next 3 exits on your drive as to gas station… and the prices…. The same for lodging and you can call with just a touch on the app. Or get directions with a touch…..
I wouldn’t travel without this app.
I also use it here in TV to see what the local gas stations are charging with in about 10 miles radius….
Have a safe trip….

I-81 avoids Washington DC and New York City.
Charlotte NC is the worst traffic on that path.
I have found that Jonesville NC is a good overnight spot.

Take the Amtrak Auto Train which offers a daily, nonstop service between Sanford, Florida and Lorton, Virginia, near Washington, D.C., allowing passengers to travel with their vehicles. The train departs from Sanford at 4 PM and arrives in Lorton at 9 AM the next day. My parents have taken it and another time my cousin took it. Both enjoyed the experience. There are sleeper cars and restaurant/ food available. It will cover a nice portion of your trip.
When traveling to FL w my cats, (7 hrs) I used a calming spray on a towel in the cages. Half the trip they were out of the cages but pretty much just chilled. All the best to you on your journey

Take 95 to 26 to 77 to 81 to 84 to 290 to 495 to 95
WESTERN Base route:
Take 95 to 26 to 77 to 81 to 84 to 90 to 290 to 495 to 95
Alternate slightly shorter NJ/NY/NE but slightly more congested and more limited services:
Take 95 to 26 to 77 to 81 to 78 to 287 to 87 to 84 to 90 to 290 to 495 to 95
Take 95 to 26 to 77 to 81 to 78 to 287 to 87 to 90 to 495 to 95
EASTERN Base ROUTE slightly more direct, but much more construction/congestion (NC) and more services, still avoids most of DC and Baltimore:
Take 95N to 495E DC Beltway to 50E to Delaware 301N to 95N NJ Delaware Memorial Bridge to 287 to 87 to 84 to 90 to 290 to 495 to 95
Scenic and slower but avoids all of DC/Baltimore,
Take 95N to Emporia NC 58E to the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel, to 13N MD/DE to 1N DE to 95N NJ Delaware Memorial Bridge to 287 to 87N to 84E to 90E to 290 to 495N to 95N
Have taken all of them, weekday vs weekend, time of day all can make a difference in NJ north, due to the increasing population density as you go North. With gas / potty breaks and meals, which ends up to be 45m to 60 min lost time for lunch, we plan average speed of 55 mph to estimate total driving time.
We use two drivers, so that can make a difference, as well as weekday/weekend and time of day. We haven't encountered many road closures / accidents in 5 years taking these routes several times a year.
good luck and have fun!

Agree, but plan on 24 hours. The Harrisburg route adds an hour but there is no risk of tunnel and bridge delay

I suggest that you add iExit. It shows you gas stations, restaurants, and lodging on your trip as you drive.
iExit is an excellent app for services and distances to state lines/exits on the major interstates, and we use Gas Buddy app to also check local gas and diesel prices when not on a major interstate. However, gas buddy is crowd sourced, and subject to station owner manipulation, been burnt several times.
Pays to have a gas app for some gas savings as well, if you travel often. We use Shell for the discounts, and gas points from local shopping, but the shopping rebates are all regionally based. So FL gas points aren't usable out of FL. . Gas buddy has discounts as well for any station.

I've gone this way several times. Distance wise, it's a little longer. Time wise, also just little longer but less of a chance for traffic tie ups. The fastest way, and we went to Berwick, Maine for several years, now to southern NH, is 95 all the way. but I would only do it on a weekend. Construction in No and So. Carolina can be bad, it's still only two lanes. They are widening it now. Plus, on weekend you don't get the commuter traffic in all the urban areas. If you want to avoid the GW bridge in NY, take the Garden State Parkway up to the Cuomo Bridge (687), then up to 684 to 84 thru Hartford.

The Villages is getting so big, the best way to get north of Jacksonville depends on where you live in the Villages. We cross 441 from Avenida Central to Griffin Ave., take 25 to Weirsdale to 42 to Altoona then take 19 north through the Ocala forest to Palatka to 17 to Orange Park to the 295 west loop around Jacksonville to 95. With the exception of a bunch of traffic lights on the last stretch of 17, it’s a very nice ride. We have tried just about every other possible route and found this to be the best and most consistent route from the LSL/SS area of the Villages.

We are now too old to make the 2 ½ day drive but we always avoided I95 because of the congestion in and around NYC (especially the G. W. bridge.) We always found the inland route through PA. mountains to be better (Except when snow is a possibility) and only a little longer.

That’s how we would drive to Portland from our home in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. We take back roads to Northampton where we pick up 91 north to Brattleboro, VT and then cut across into Keene, NH. On a side note, Keene, NH is home to my favorite golf course in New England, the beautiful 36 hole Bretwood Golf Course.

Take 295 around Richmond and I-95 EXPRESS lanes around DC and Baltimore (passing thru White Marsh) to the east taking the express choices (all brand new) every time you can get on it. It saves you HOURS of time. Also take the NJ Trnpke to Garden State Pkwy north to go over the Tappan Zee Bridge. You never even know NY is there. I can get from TV to Maine bridge in 21 hours, with no big deal and no horrible driving. You now can get around DC and Baltimore in short order. 15 hours Florence, SC to ME. Best days to drive Sat (TV to Florence 6 hrs) Sun (SC to ME 15 hrs). Best restaurant is Reins in Vernon, CT, just north of Hartford.... in and out at the counter and gas across the street. Yup, for also using 290 bypass thru Worcester, MA up to 495 around BOS.

Portland Maine is 1400 miles from The Villages. Gross, FL is 150 miles from TV and you can't get there in less than 3 hours, no how, no way. If you're taking 95N, you're going through Gross.
Portland is another 1250 miles from Gross. You would have to average 70 mph from Gross, FL to Portland, ME ... that includes stopping for gas & food, as well as any traffic or construction along the way. I have travelled NH or MA to FL, 50 times. I have never, not once, been able to average over 64 mph for the entire trip.
This thread is getting like the threads on milage for Lithium carts. Yeah, you can maybe get 80 miles on a 210 AMP ... don't go over 18 mph, coast down hills and don't carry a passenger or any extra weight. Not the real world.

the beautiful 36 hole Bretwood Golf Course.
Yes, totally agree there, we make an annual pilgrimage early every fall, September. Won a corporate outing there my first time.
I made my first nearly 300 yard drive there, top of the hill North Course # 6
Our friends who moved with us to TV made her first hole in one there, the day they bought their house in TV.
Need to play the south course again, only once in 15 years.

They used to have a weekday special when I was much younger, unlimited play with a cart, for about $55 (now it’s 36 holes with a cart Monday through Thursday for $99). My buddies and I would do the special at least a couple times per year and always played a minimum 54 holes. One year my best friend and I showed up on June 21st (the longest day of the year) at dawn and attempted to get in 100 holes. We would have made it, but we ran into leagues that slowed us down and had to quit after 92 holes because of darkness. Both courses are beautiful, but my favorite is the south course. Ya gotta love 36 holes with almost zero houses, the covered bridges lined with blooming flower pots, and the really nice bent grass greens.

Keep cats in separate cages. Dose with gabapentin from vet. 100mg capsule; open capsule, stir into food. Pill takes about two hours to take affect, but then they sleep the whole rest of the way. Give it to them each morning and you’re good to go. note: put disposable litter box in bathroom tub. I use a plastic tarp under the box for spills. Scoopable litter of course Each cat gets 15 minutes alone evening and am to do their thing.
I bag all cat stuff, the box litter, empty food cans in a big black baggie so that no one even knows there was a cat in the room although yes, I do use pet friendly rooms. Good luck!

Yes, you are doing this right. I have no advice for your specific drive as mine was to the upper midwest.
But I do have advice for the kitties for that long of a drive. No longer than 6hrs with the cats. We recently drove 24 hrs with cats from upper Midwest.
Expect lots of "meowin'".
Get hemp oil, catnip and test this out before you leave to determine if these will work for your kitties.
Be ready to unload them first into hotel room and have a water bowl, box, and food immediately.
It's essential to find hotels that accept the cats (fess up and pay them). Large majority of hotels are NOT pet friendly so plan WAY ahead. They will nickel and dime you and will charge an extra $50 per night for the two cats. Ridiculous.
I personally would not travel that distance with pets due to unfriendly hotel conditions charging huge amounts for an overnight stay for animals that don't cause problems. But it is what it is with the greedy hotel industry.

"put disposable litter box in bathroom tub. I use a plastic tarp under the box for spills." Excellent advice. Don't let any litter go down drain. Also buy a cheap dustpan and matching brush. Bring lots of trash bags.

We travel NE to TV and back with 2 cats occasionally. We start with them in carriers and cages, however, we open the doors so they can roam freely. The more you travel with them, the more they get comfortable with the travel. some with talk the voice of their people all the whole time (cry), initial vet drugs before leaving helps them get acclimated.
We cover the seats and floor with a plastic tarp to keep accidents and claws from wrecking any locations. Litter box on one side of the floor, food/water on the other floor in the back seat. We have left them in the truck overnight instead of taking them into the hotel room. Windows were cracked slightly and nights not below freezing. They were fine. . .
While driving, and they are not experienced, they can end up in places you don't want them to be:
Under the dashboard, behind the gas pedal, on the driver's lap, on the dashboard in front of the driver,
Events which can happen:
They poop on your legs/clothes while driving and in any other places except the litter box. . have cleaning wipes available, travel with a go bag with a change of clothes happened two hours into our drive last time. They barf from motion sickness. . They find place to sleep which they find requires less motion prevention work by muscles. . like sleeping during rough seas, tough if you are constantly using muscles to resist rolling.
We keep an extra towel to put on the passenger's legs to prevent claws from legs during warm months drive with short on. .
good luck. .
