Academy Awards now requires voters to actually watch the movie. (https://apnews.com/article/oscars-rule-changes-academy-awards-477d12f8be9967ac956579919f91b736)

The Academy Awards launched a new rule for members who vote for Oscar winners: You have to watch the movies to vote.

THEY WEREN’T DOING THAT BEFORE!? How can that be a NEW rule? What were votes based on before before (You know the answer.)?

As if you needed another reason not to watch.

Is the "viewing" interactive, wherein one must click to respond to a question regarding the movie every ten minutes while it plays? Or can one simply put the video in the machine (or streamed from The Academy), press play, and simply go to breakfast?

I suppose they will need to pass a test on the movies? Or have a hall monitor at the movie theater? I recall at some of the movies we watched in class in high school some of the snoring was not from the movie nor from the teacher.

I think you guys are missing the point. How can they bestow awards based on votes from people who didn't watch the movie? If they didn't watch, what is their vote based on? A feeling?

We hardly ever see the movies up for awards so apparently neither has the people voting for the film.

Who would have thought.

Nope. A bias, an agenda pushed, or a vote for a friend or someone they worked with before and liked.

Probably from the critical reviews and the like. There are a number of Best Picture winners I have still not seen .

Lately, I think its been more about checking the boxes on certain criteria that has nothing to do with a good movie and more to do with DEI.

The only thing that I might add is that I would like to see a Oscar for multiple-episode films since that is what many people are watching at home on streaming services. Something like "Zero Day" or "OA".

I do not see much problem with trying to walk in another person's shoes. Kind of been the point of stories over the past three thousand years or so. The Fall of Troy and stories about it inspired many. Same with Biblical stories.

You're right. Hollywood has a lot in common with the Bible (esp Old Testament) and Talmud. It's a most American event- nothing like it in China for sure!

More Samson and Delilah than Jesus and Paul.

My only requirement for the Oscars is to tune it out and ignore it completely.

When they started acting like they had something important to say and spewed garbage for 15 minutes or so stopped watching.

We do it in our local, regional and even national elections. There is no requirement to be informed! LOL

Just vote what makes you "feel good".

I am not in the Academy so it does not effect me...
