My wife and I are going to take up the game of golf in the near future. We have all the necessities except "woods" for my wife. We will just be using the par 3 courses at first.
I can not see getting her the normal driver, 3 and 4 "woods". Once again we are good with her irons. And with your suggestions where could I get them used at a very good price. Thanks, Bud

I would get a driver and one other "wood". If you buy used clubs, make sure they are not too old. The newer sets have mostly hybrid clubs instead of irons because they are easier to hit. The shortest iron may be a 7-iron. If you find a used set that starts at a 4-iron, it is most likely an old set of clubs. New starter sets are pretty inexpensive.

Curious when you say you can not see getting her the normal driver, 3 and 4 woods. Why not? Are you saying she wont need them (ie driver?) She will need them on the executive courses, even those with no par 4's. I would say get her a driver, 3 and 5.

How young/strong is your wife? Some ladies I golf with use their drivers for as little as 110 yards. Definitely get her a 5 hybrid. And as long as you are getting that, get her a full set.
The executive courses have lots of par 4's Get her the Big Bertha type.

You can buy a top-of-the-line Big Bertha driver for women for only $500. It's almost as cheap as a Coach handbag. Go for it.

I agree re the thought that don't think that a "big bertha" type would be too much club. As mentioned, on the executives there are still par 4's on some. Even those without, there are some par 3's where I would be shocked if she could not benefit from a driver. For example, played Gray Fox yesterday. From the back tees, there is one par 4 and there are 5 par threes of over 170 yards.

Goodwill has single golf clubs at very low prices. They will be used but almost always fine for a starter player.

110 yards?????:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:
Look in the paper, half the so-called holes-in-one are 58 yards with a skulled driver into a 12 inch hole:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:
And that's not sexist since I also see some men with the same "accomplishment"

The Golf Shop in Brownwood sells used clubs, as does the Golf shop on the North side of 466, East of Morse, next to the "Villages Discount Golf Cart" showroom...

Get her a newer decent set of clubs. It’ll increase the odds of her enjoying the game substantially. I was surprised to learn how much easier it is to hit the ball as the clubs have evolved over the years.
And it’s well taking the time for lessons. I did not enjoy golf until I did. Really helps to know what you’re doing wrong and how to fix it.

You could try Play it Again Sports in Leesburg. But, based on my personal experience, if you can afford it, don't skimp on equipment unless you don't want your wife to have fun. Having good equipment with generous lofts and proper shaft flex can help make the experience better.

Unless she is playing executive courses with a par 4 she doesn’t need a driver or and woods. Irons and a hybrid (7). If playing a course with a par 4 a driver and a hybrid (7).
That’s it.

First things first, take a few lessons with Billy at Oxford Golf Academy which is behind Walmart on 466. He is fun and your wife will enjoy the game before you waste your money on somebody’s old junk clubs. Then go to Golf Central in Brownwood and buy a bag set of decent clubs, it will make a world of difference.
Enjoy.

Welcome to the "golf life." You will enjoy it much more if you take the five-day "New to Golf Program" from The Villages Golf Academy. You will be glad you did. You can discuss buying additional clubs with the instructor. As one commenter said, do not buy old junk. If you make a good start, you will enjoy it for life. Also, PLEASE take The Villages New to Golf School at your next opportunity. It is a morning of rules and etiquette instruction.

Golf Central , in Brownwood, or Johnnys on 466. They both have used sets & single clubs, women's used had been harder to find.
Good luck & enjoy

Not everyone Hits a Driver 200 yds. There are many smaller / older woman who only hit a driver 100 yds. or less. Someone just starting out is also going to hit shorter distances.

We didn't golf until the year after we moved here (so we have been golfing about 5 years now). I am 5 ft and weigh about 135. The clubs I use all the time is my 3W instead of my driver because I can control it better, my 7W which I use in place of my 5H and 6H, and generally my 7 iron which I use for holes 90 - 118 yards.
My driver is just there so I can show off its head cover. My 3W goes just as far as i would hit the driver, but i can send it down the middle of the fairway with it. So i would recommend a 3W, 7W, irons 7-9, a pitching wedge and sand wedge.

I agree with this. I was a completely frustrated lady golfer until I took lessons from a local Pro and told him “I can’t hit a driver.” He explained a bit about swing speed (mine is too slow to get loft from the usual driver), loft and shaft, and fitted me with a driver with the correct loft and shaft for my swing. It cost me over four hundred dollars, but was worth every cent! I finally started to enjoy playing much more, and don’t even mind the par fours.
The idea is to have fun… while not being a nuisance to other golfers… Good Golf School will help with that. I hope you and your wife have a great time out there!

When I started a million years ago JCPenney had a starter set: driver, 3 wood, and 5,7&9 irons and putter. Today may have hybrids thrown in. I see a lot of ladies use drivers on every hole. Demo some clubs then find someone with used ones to sell. Hope this helps.

I would take her to Golf Central. The folks there are top notch. They will guide you to the best clubs -used or new. They have a great program for buying old clubs and you could put it towards getting her a set that fits her. They usually have a great selection of used clubs too.

I played the executive courses for over a year with just a 5 hybrid,7 iron, wedge and putter. It was fine. I've since added a 5 Wood and a driver. Hate the driver and use the 5 wood occasionally.
I had never golfed before and I did fine.

For a brand new golfer, I would not get a driver. I’d get a 5-wood and a 5 and 6 hybrid. Easier to hit and more functional.

As a female golfer of about 7 years now, I have seen a lot of women golf. Everyone is different and the distance one can hit a ball is determined by many factors. So, to “listen” to some of these comments will not be beneficial for your wife.
My suggestions:
1. Make sure you attend a class on golf etiquette and rules - that will ensure that you are playing the game as it is intended to be played. It is also a courtesy to others that you are playing with.
2. Take a few lessons for the basics - grip, stance, basic swing. That will go a long way.
3. Buy a new set of clubs with some hybrids. I have a driver, 3, 5, and 7 wood (the woods are not used very often), 6 and 5 hybrid wood (that I use often) 7, 8, 9 iron, PW, SW, and putter. I don’t use every club each time I go out, but it is nice to have them if I want/need them.
4. Have fun! There will be days you will ask yourself “Why am I learning to play this game”. Give yourself grace and start over the next time with a fresh attitude.😀
Welcome to TV and I hope these comments have helped in someway.

When I started I ordered my beginner set from Cobra. If you are lucky the golf shops around here carry it but they run out time to time. It has everything she needs. She will definitely need a driver, 3, 5, 7 woods (I use them all frequently), 7 iron, 5 hybrid, 8, 9, P,S, putter. I use them all on the executive courses. The executives have one or two par 4’s on them that are 250-400 yards. Most women hit their driver 100-175 yards.

Get the DRIVER! Easiest club to hit, big head. Tee it high and ball at front toe. STARE at the ball until it's gone. Slow short backswing and easy turn, swing thru. 100 yards high and straight. Practice at the driving range and increase back swing for greater distance. People get intimated with a driver but are usually trying to kill it. I hit a driver 250 yards consistently. On 200 yard holes I will use a driver with a nice controlled swing. High and straight. Less control hitting a hybrid and swinging too hard. People roll their eyes when my wife walks up to the tee box with a driver on a 100 yard hole. Easy swing high and straight on the green. Par 4 or 130 yard hole, longer back swing a little more umph and there it goes!

Get her a driver. Any and all golf stores sell used ones. But be sure to get a late model big headed driver. Most importantly the grip needs to be good. Almost all used club purchases should get new grip before walking out of store. Its impossible to hit a good shot with a slippery grip. That said if you plan on golfing a lot, you should get her a mew driver with the correct flex, most likely ladies flex.

If you new golfers go to goodwill as suggested, get one for 5 or 10 dollars if that. They usually have good selection of oversized fairway woods. I don’t recommend the small woods, going to need all the area you can get…:beer3:

Grips are that hard to change. I replace mine several times, I like the oversized grips, especially on the putter..

Anyone who has watched the LPGA realizes that strength is second to a proper swing and good clubs. Most of the players are slender and relatively short but can drive the ball 250 yards. Therefore, buy good clubs and get her lessons from a good teacher.

With all of the improvements in golf club design, 30-year old clubs are basically worthless. That is why you need to know how old the clubs are, or buy new clubs. I would recommend buying a new set of starter clubs. They really are not very expensive.
