We have a four year old LG washing machine. A couple of weeks ago, my wife noticed what appeared to be brown particles in the machine after she washed the clothes. She showed it to me today and there were dozens of small particles mixed in with the clothes. It looked like a large leaf from a tree had gotten in the wash and had broken down into pieces.
However, when I went online, it appeared that it was not a leaf but that it was something called scrud. According to the internet, scrud is a buildup that occurs when fabric softener mixes with laundry detergent. However, my wife doesn't use fabric softner.
Is anyone familiar with this and, if so, how to get rid of it?
And has anyone ever used a clean cycle on a washing machine? I have never heard of it until today. I don't think my parents had it on their machine and we never had it on the machine up north.
Thanks.

We have run a few clean cycles with a cleaning pod but only to avoid a problem and not to fix one.

You can try use clean cycle with chemicals being it only 4 years old, but it could be plugged beyond what chemicals can do? unless to take the outer tank out and clean screen holes and remove water pump and de-coat slim/sludge? I found this out when my washer would not pump water out the pump was clogged with sludge. I got it to pump or pump water again, but knew it was on its last leg.
Most likely cause using too much soap or any other chemical added with soap? My washer was 10 years old and I couldn’t get outer tub out due to corrosion. So brought new POC, that take hour just do simple wash, I figure if I get 4 years out of it I’m lucky.

We have the same problem with our LG….about 4-5 years old. Started about a year ago….so discussed that we are thinking about getting a new washer. Right now we are using the washer cleaning tablets once a month but really should probably do it twice. You can get them at Walmart or Lowe’s….buy the big box, you’ll need them. A few times while it’s going through the cycle I pause it and get a strainer to get some of the “crap” out of the water….amazing how much floating around!!!! I think I’m going to call LG and see what they have to say…just been dragging my feet. Just does not look like an easy process of taking it apart to clean.

Happens all the time with our LG. The cure was emptying out the pockets in my shorts before doing a wash.

You’re supposed to clean out the filter on the washing machine monthly. I’d start there if I were you. Just find a YouTube video if you don’t know how to do it. Then get some cleaning pods and run them through the cleaning cycle monthly as well as wipe out the inside. If it’s a front loader that is. Also never shut the door as mold/mildew will grow in there.

We have an LG that is about 9 years old (amazingly) Look at the bottom left side of the unit. There is a small panel you can pop open. Inside is a filter that needs to be cleaned. I never knew about this and when I cleaned it out it was pretty gross. Even found a golf tee in there.
After that there is a product you can put in your washer and run a cycle to clean it.

You may want to check the manual for your particular model. I haven't inspected my machine but in my manual there is no mention of disassembling and cleaning a tub filter or opening a small panel. Mine is only a few years old so things certainly could have changed.
