View Full Version : Wind chime etiquette

I have an accepted offer on a home in TV and starting to sort through what we bring down. I love my Corinthian Bell wind chimes and would like to bring them down. I also realize that others may not enjoy my affection for wind chimes. I am curious if there are any rules or etiquette other than asking my neighbors?
If it makes a difference, the home is on a lot with open separation (no fence) between homes, with a pond in back. Walking trail on the left and a home on the right.
Thanks in advance for all the thoughtful responses I am about to receive. This forum is amazing.

Rubber wind chimes are very popular with neighbors in TV.

IMO they can be beautiful or irritating. In the ear of the beholder.
For me I'm in the latter camp. We do get winds here, and that could be grrrrr. And at night that could be extremely irritating to neighbors. That sound can travel extensively.
Wrap the bells in foam rubber.

I, for one, do not have wind chimes but I do enjoy them. Others will probably suggest you review. your CDD rules and regulations to make certain you are not in violation.
Be mindful to take them down when you leave (if you snowbird/snowflake) because of hurricane season.

There are no rules about wind chimes. Believe me, I have checked everything. But I hate them and I think they should be banned everywhere. It is inconsiderate to force a neighbor to listen to a wind chime 24/7. It is noise pollution, and it would cause me to sell my house and to move if a neighbor refused to remove them.

My new neighbor across the street has 5 different types of cheap wind chimes hanging. Some are wooden, some metal, etc. After 5 minutes on a windy day I can no longer sit on my lanai or keep my windows opened for fresh air. I have politely asked to move some to their backyard which backs up to the street. They have ignored my request. It is noise pollution and sounds like broken glass and not melodic at all. I’ve lived here 20 years and not going to move for inconsiderate people.

Absolutely hate wind chimes. They go on and on and on, every day … noise pollution. And you can hear it several houses away depending on the direction of the wind. One neighbor 5 houses away had them at the front and after they noticed that people weren’t talking to them, they took the stuff off.
Can I suggest a water fountain instead?

Agreed. Neighbor moved in last year and immediately hung a heavy set of wind chimes off their lanai, which happens to be 15 foot from our master bedroom window. No consideration, just constant noise pollution.

They should not be allowed in communities such as this that have very little space between homes. Before buying we rented homes here and pulled in the first afternoon to find out the neighbor had a pool next to the master with wind chimes everywhere. I told my wife I would not be using the master. That night the tornado came through 2/2/2007, problem solved.

There is the ideal solution. If you like to look at and listen to wind chimes, hang them INSIDE your house and you can see and hear them 24/7. Don't force your neighbors to listen to noise pollution that you created. If you like hearing them, your dining room is an ideal place for them. Thanks for your consideration.

Funny nobody thinks to ask it’s ok that I leave my dogs that bark at the wind, in the yard for 4-8 hours a day. Or better yet in their garage with the door open a foot, barking for attention to get them out of the cages.
I take 24/7 wind chimes any day over abusing a pet left outside for hours at a time.

No way anyone is leaving anything like an animal in the garage in this summer heat let alone the yard. A 100 degree garage would warrant a call to the warden. Sounds like the owner is having mental issues?

If you don’t like your neighbors, hang them up!
I had several wind chimes at my home in Virginia, but then my closest neighbor was a quarter mile away. I decided not to hang them when I came to the villages because just because I love them does not mean my neighbors will.
Let us know in a year if you decided to hang them, how things turned out.

The downside for them is they are very annoying to folks that do not like them. If you like them, that’s great, but it is about being considerate of those around you. Most people in the villages try to be considerate and think of others more than they think of themselves. So it really depends if you want to think more of yourself or be considerate of others around you

Thanks, but I have rarely seen a wind chime used as a lawn ornament. If you hang it under an eave or inside of a screened in lanai, it is not a lawn ornament. So, this rule would be worthless at stopping someone from hanging a wind chime.

I love my expanded bird cage and lanai. We spend many hours out back on it. Across the street they have wind chimes….a couple of them. Although they are very nice, I find them very annoying. The neighbor next door asked them to remove them for the same reason, they live closer. They did not. Also annoying my privacy is one of those water things that run all day/night…and we hear water….all the time, even when sleeping with the windows open. I dont mention it to the neighbors, I try to accommodate what they like…BUT I honestly wish everyone would think about their neighbors before doing things that impact them. I deal with it, it’s not the end of the world, but I would appreciate it if they removed it. Just trying to be neighborly…..

Personally, I love them. I have a few. I hang most in our enclosed lanai, they sound quietly when the doors are open. The biggest one is hung outside the front door, near my kitchen window. Only I hear this one. I did ask my neighbors when I moved in and only one minded. The key is to be thoughtful to your neighbors. Be connected to them so you can talk out your differences. You already seem to understand this. Welcome to TV.

The fact that the OP asked shows that they do care, but does anyone really need a CDD rule to keep them from annoying their neighbor? You're not on the farm in Kansas any more. The houses here are close together.
Any unnecessary noise should be reason enough to have some consideration for those near you.
The daily dose of (necessary) leaf blowers and string trimmers is bad enough.

This is my first post, I couldn't keep quiet on this one since I have a Corinthian bell wind chime as well. I have gotten several coompliments of the tones. We live on the corner and the wind chime is in the back, there's a canal full of trees behind us and on other side of canal are patio villa houses, so the backs of their houses face the canal with no lanai. Even though I'm pretty sure they can't hear the chimes, when it gets very windy, I wrap them up and during thunderstorms (hurricane like storms), I bring them in.

Obviously, wind chimes that you cannot hear are fine. But, the ones that you can hear are not fine. My experience is that wind chime noise travels a lot further than some people think. The fact that some people like wind chimes has nothing to do with the issue. There are a lot of people who hate them.

The fact that you asked, and used the word etiquette, indicates you have nice manners.
Btw, when I saw this thread, I immediately thought of "Body Heat," one of my favorite movies. Wind chimes are effectively used in the soundtrack. . .
"Body Heat" (1981) stars Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, and Richard Crenna. Set in Florida.
Turner's character, Matty, says to William Hurt, a lawyer, "You're not too smart are you. I like that in a man." (She is right. She knows he is not thinking with his head.)
I digress, but anyway, don't hang up the wind chimes.

Our neighbor has windchimes and feeds birds less than 10 ft from our lanai. We have asked her to please put them on side of her yard. So rude so irritating and inconsiderate. We got squirrel in attic and there was food she was putting out. Plus holes on top of our birdcage from squirrel climbing up to eat food she puts out. Mist neighbors awesome some really inconsiderate. The windchimes give is headaches. She keeps her windows closed so I doubt she even hears her windchimes.

In the grand scheme of life you certainly can live without your wind chimes. Please don't do that to your neighbors. In the TV almost every day there is a breeze, so it would be nonstop noise. This is very different here with houses very very close together.
I am sure you could still be happy without them. A lot of people are very sensitive to constant noise and you could very literally ruin someone's life here in TV. Donate them to goodwill before you move.

I think it's nice of you to ask! To me it depends on the wind chimes themselves, and your neighbors. Asking your NEAR neighbors if they're bothered by the chimes may be a good way to meet them, but be prepared for an answer you may not like, or expect. As for me, I like 'em.

I love the sound of Corinthian wind chimes. I don't like the metal ones that are constantly "tinging" . Corinthian chimes are like being in a spa. I would bring them and see how they work out. You can ask your neighbor, after you have had them up for a while. I believe they will love them. You should take them down when it gets really windy for their protection!

You can listen to them here.

Would you want to hear it every time you walked into your lanai?

No.

The way way the start of this post is worded tends to make one think you feel you are special. When you buy a house you do not accept an offer, you make one and it is accepted or not. The way you state this, it says you feel you did someone a favor by accepting their offer to you to buy their house, typically unsolicited.
Now, in case you are not aware, wind chimes are not sound directional. They will not only be heard by your ears but everyone else's within the same range. So what you are asking is can I annoy my neighbors with my wind chimes??
Please reconsider your desire to live within Grey Poupon range of your neighbors. You should always consider your actions and their impact on others.
Please ponder all of this, then make your decision.

We, and our neighbors have wind chimes. No complaints from other neighbors. If we get complaint, the chimes will come down.

Those who love wind chimes should keep them locked indoors with the windows closed. Use a fan, if you must, to enjoy them.
Neighbors who have wind chimes outdoors simply have no concern for their neighbors. If a neighbor had wind chimes outdoors, I would be tempted to buy a huge dog and let it do its business on the wind chime neighbor's lawn.

Wind chimes are noise pollution. That is a grating noise that people have no ability to quell if the wind is rattling them. Please don’t do it. Your neighbors will appreciate you leaving them in the box unless you remove the offending noise pollution makers.

The only best answer is to bring them, but then adapt to your neighbors. You can't change TV, and to try to change TV would be even more unappreciated. However, you might find neighbors who are deaf, or you might find the chimes broken after a big thunderstorm.
One scenario is that all the neighborhood is full of snow birds, so in the summer time, you can put them out when not alot of people are around.. . . So you might get the ocassional usage.
good luck

I do not have a yes or no opinion. Recently I received a beautiful wind chime as a gift in memory of my deceased sister. A beautiful inspiration is inscribed on it with her name. I was unsure at first of hanging it. But it is protected from the elements of rain & breezes. If it does chime, it is very soft at least to me.On windy days, I have used rubber bands on the chimes to keep them quiet. Just a suggestion.

That is a perfect place to hang them - in the lanai that has doors!

My wife has some wind chimes that she put on a Shepards crook in our backyard. She found them on the patio table one day and she put them back on the crook. They were back on the table again the next day. Since I’m the only other person with access to our backyard, it was obvious who took the chimes down. It didn’t take three times - the chimes have never appeared again. Darn, I hate wind chimes.
