View Full Version : Opinion on Costco and 301

Ok, my opinion looks like customers will be coming from all directions in central Florida to Costco’s off CR 446 and 301? Probably as far north as Gainesville or beyond?
301 already nightmare with bottle neck from CR42 to Summerfield. CR 42, CR 466, CR 484, and 30l all directions will be impacted. 466 and 301 intersections IMO can’t hardly handle traffic now due to turning lanes too short and not 2 lanes to turn north, south, and east on 301. This backs up traffic pass stop light at railroad tracks by Walmart. Not to mention when trains come? Also good luck getting through intersections in front Costco on side streets?
Also IMO the bottle neck after summerfield south should have been 4 lanes 10 years ago. Looks like they are working on bottleneck ( think they will be done before Costco’s opens? :)

It will be interesting for sure how many Costco members will lose their lives
coming and going to shop before someone from the highway planning
commission stands up and admits this was a big mistake to permit Costco here.
God help us all.

Apparently not many drive to Clearmont Costco. 80mph down TP, then 8 lanes of stop go on Hwy 50. Then the bonus of either returning to TV on 27 with stop lights, or TP and the 30-60 minute backup because of construction. As executive member I will be buy fuel, then shopping an hour before open to the regular members.

My wife shops at the Clermont Costco frequently. If the new Costco is crowded she will probably just keep going to Clermont. It is fairly convenient from the southern sections, particularly if you are headed to Orlando anyway for another reason, which we frequently are.

I do wonder what they were thinking. It seems like it would have made more sense to put it on 44 somewhere, which would catch both the turnpike and I-75 traffic. A highway makes much more sense than in TV. 466 will be a nightmare with all the out of town traffic it will bring.

Apparently Costco and the developer have been in negotiations for locations in near and around The Villages for more than 3-7 years.
We are extremely happy for Costco to be built at this location. Big reason Not in our back door, but within 10 minutes. So blissfully we are still in the lack of retail traffic for hopefully many years to come. Will there be more traffic, yes. Will it draw customers away from Walmart, HL, Homegoods, probably not. The restaurants should see an uptick in customers. The only downside I see, is Fresh market. Costco meat prices may hurt them.
Costco would never build at a site that wouldn’t draw customers from 6am fuel station opening to shoppers at 9-10am. (Depending on site hours and membership status). Pretty sure traffic flow in-depth studies were done for years to maximize, customer base from outside the bubble.
Bonus Costco won’t have offer $25 memberships for new customers. So for a month or so most customers could be long standing Costco patrons, who will drive up to an hour to shop.
We have been Costco Business Members over 20 years, along with Sam’s. We didn’t renew Sam’s this year, and had a brief 3 month free with BJ’s.
Costco home delivery, along with Amazon, Kroger, Walmart+, takes care of 90% of our retail needs. We only fuel up very 30-45 days so one stop shop very early or just before closing. We will still shop Clearmont on our return from the parks, or want better dining options.
A bit dramatic, don’t you think?

I’ve been a Sam’s Club member for around thirty years. I don’t see much reason to switch. The sort of things Costco sells that Sam’s Club doesn’t sell are generally things I don’t buy anyway.
Yes, there will be more traffic on 301 and 466, but considering that most of the traffic on 466 keeps going rather than stopping to shop at the many stores, we should not assume that this is going to change. Even if twenty cars per minute on 466 turn to go to Costco, which. Is not likely to happen very often, traffic won’t be affected very much; we can handle it. In general, it will not be “a nightmare.”
What WILL be “a nightmare” is trying to drive there, park there, or shop there in the first week it is open, or perhaps even the first month. Thousands around here will want to come check it out. Why not just wait and let the excitement and the parking and traffic jams die down? Parking close to the building will be the worst, so why not plan to park on the outskirts and just do a little extra walking. (You’ll be walking inside the store anyway, right?) We all know that it will usually be packed on Saturday and Sunday, so why not just stay away on weekends and leave it to the people who work for a living? It will be least crowded Monday through Friday before 11, so why not limit your visits to weekday mornings? I hate crowds, so that’s what I try to do at Sam’s Club.

I think people overestimate the volume of people and traffic that will be going to Costco, thinking it will be some kind of Armageddon. I go to the one in Claremont, usually on a Saturday morning, and it's not bad at all. Plenty of parking and although 50 has a lot of traffic, it's not solely because of Costco. That's just a really busy road in general. If people do end up coming down from Gainesville it's only gonna be a hearty few that will drive over an hour and pay tolls to get here, especially with Sam's Club and BJ's around. I am a die hard Costco shopper and I was hesitating whether renewing my membership when I moved here, just because it takes 50 minutes to get down there and I have to pay tolls.
The other thing is people typically don't go to Costco multiple times a week like they might with Publix or Walmart because you're usually buying bulk product. For me, I go about once every two weeks, even when I only lived 20 minutes away from it up in Minnesota. I'm sure they'll be a noticeable increase in traffic but I think it will be fine.

Where are you going to place the stuff you buy there on a golf cart ??
IMHO, folks doing any serious shopping at Costco will be leaving their golf carts home ….

Out of the 13 Costco‘s I shop have never been able to get close to the building. I don’t even try. I’m usually in the back 40 the farthest away from the building no matter what time a day. Then I find the same amount of shoppers Monday through Friday as Saturday and Sunday. It’s just a different clientele more families on Saturday and Sunday more old people Monday through Friday either way, it’s still busy.

Hey people ...... the area where Costco is located is zoned BUSINESS !!!
That means TRAFFIC. No matter what kind of business would be located in that empty lot, it would draw traffic. That's why there are lots of traffic lights on 466. Besides, we live in a congested area, full of homes, stores and restaurants. It's convenient to shop and eat in one area that gets you most of what you need.
Maybe they should have put a Fun Stop there instead of Costco. That would have been much worse.
Most of you are making a tempest in a teapot.

This is why I love the Villages. People with no knowledge or experience in doing something are all better planners than those who do it for a living.
Of course the city and CostCo did traffic studies, etc. This is not the first CostCo ever built, after all.
Cities can, and do, make the company build out road improvements and such if needed.
But please, never stop posting about how much more you know about something than the experts, it is fun to read over morning coffee

What city? Oxford? I sure they have team of planners working around clock? Funny how southern villagers complain about traffic all time and how it was poorly planned. Obvious when there are 100 cars deep just get through B/V CR44 stop light how well that was planned? and yes had years to plan it. Build first plan later. 466 at 301 don’t have enough and long enough turning lanes why traffic backs up even during none snowbird season.

Judging from some other traffic complaints around the area, I think you give the City/County/State too much credit here. The MO seems to be:
- Approve it
- Build it
- Watch congestion build
- Receive complaints
- Insist that the roads are adequate based on a traffic study done ten years ago before the additional homes or businesses were even being considered
- Receive more complaints or cleanup an accident
- Commission a traffic study to determine what can be done about the sudden congestion
(In the city's/county's defense, they may need to wait for a traffic problem to justify a new traffic study and you never know how accurate the previous study was. Anticipating what people will do today based on the habits of people ten years ago has got to be tricky)

The difference is that 50 was built to accommodate heavy traffic and 466 was not. There are 3+ lanes in each direction on 50 and the speed limit is 45-55 mph. 466 is a highly congested road with inadequate lanes and a low speed limit in part due to the school. There is no legitimate comparison.

...Bonus Costco won’t have offer $25 memberships for new customers. So for a month or so most customers could be long standing Costco patrons, who will drive up to an hour to shop . . .
It seems Costco is now available (with a $50 gift card) for $65, so $15 effectively. Sams is $25, possibly $20 for seniors. An AI search engine (e.g. Gemini) will easily find these deals.
And yesterday, in my Walmart a lady at a table was offering half price Sams membership.
And if you just want to check them out, or buy a slice of pizza, or eat the free samples, here's 3 methods: In my state, they must allow you to enter, without membership, if you want to use the pharmacy. Or just walk up to someone entering and say, "Can I walk in with you? My spouse is inside shopping and has our membership card." Or go in the door for returns.

The average Costco local shopper isn’t just buying in bulk. They stop for a chicken for dinner, appetizers or desserts for a gathering a frozen mocha drink, takeout pizza, and fuel.
I would say 80% of the product we shop in Costco is not bulk. If I do choose paper towels I ship to my front door for free. Last week driving by Costco I stopped for frozen mocha new chicken sandwich on garlic ciabatta bread. I did buy 2.5” thick NY strip package of 4 but that not bulk either. Most item at Costco or Sam’s are the same quantity as Walmart. I consider bulk as a case or pallet

Sometimes it help to read all the posts. We have shopped Costco in 4 states, 13 stores over 20+ years. What was Costco business membership is free for us plus hundreds of cash back every year. Not a fan of pizza or hot dog, the new chicken sandwich or the frozen strawberry lemonade. The berry smoothie will be greatly missed.

I’m south of 44. I already drive to Winter Garden every Sunday for church. Easy to stop by Costco on way back home (just did so a few hours ago). I drive to church down the Turnpike on Sunday mornings (traffic minimal that time of morning). Coming home after shopping Costco, I drive back on 27 and then connect with the Turnpike - bypasses all that construction. Easy. I don’t see myself shopping the new Costco way up north unless I happen to already be up there for some reason.
Regarding increase traffic on 301 - I see that happening too - for us Villagers, there is an easy work-around. Just stay off 301, it’s not even part of The Villages.

I am always surprised when people say they will go to a bulk sales store in a vehicle that is so small it can barely hold products from a standard store.
Do people really buy those huge stacks of toilet paper, etc, with a golf cart?
Sounds self defeating...but if people do t and enjoy it, more power to them. :)
I do. But I get my huge package of rolls from Staples, their store brand is less expensive than anywhere else and "soft and strong" enough for their intended purpose. I think it's something like 48 double-rolls in a package.
As for Costco, it has no effect on me personally. I don't live near it, and I have BJ's a few blocks from home to fill up my gas tanks, and buy any bulk items I might need. Their deli meats are pretty good too.
If they allow non-members to just - go to check out the place for the first week, I might go. I remember vaguely that one of these big-box stores used to allow non-members in, but they'd have to pay an upcharge to buy anything. No idea if they do now.

Different people, different patterns. I don’t live close so my only reason to visit is enough price difference to make it worthwhile. When I drive to Sam’s I buy gas, rotisserie chicken, several flats of soda, and whatever else we might be interested in like paper towel or frozen food or snacks.. I wouldn’t drive there for a steak (4x2.5” steaks would be bulk in my household), I would get that closer. The items I buy would not fit on my cart.
If I lived closer I would likely stop more frequently. For me, Costco is no closer.

TV is the first place we have lived that didn’t have multiple Costco choices within 15-20 minutes or less. Much of our shopping arrives at our front door. Downside Good restaurants were 30- 40 minutes.

It was BJ's where I lived. Sam's was a half hour away and the was one Costco in Milford but it was on the Boston Post Road and what sane person would drive through the I-91/I-95 junction, through West Haven, into Milford, onto Rte 1, for a 50-pack of Pepsi when Walmart was just up the road from home and it was $2 cheaper?
And if you lived in New Haven county, or most of Connecticut, you would never go to Costco for a sub. There was a sub shop within 5 blocks of you, no matter where you lived. There were at least 3 restaurants of decent quality within a mile of home, unless you lived maybe in Danbury. But chances are, someone at the next farm could make better blueberry pancakes than any restaurant you'd ever go to anyway. Just trade them a quart of fresh raw milk and a basket of blueberries from YOUR farm, and you'll have breakfast for a week.

As a former student at UF, I’d imagine anyone from Gainesville and beyond would go to the closer Costco in Jacksonville rather than drive further to TV.

From UF the Villages Costco will be just slightly closer.
60 miles, 70 minutes to the Villages
65 miles, 80 minutes to Jacksonville
By comparison, it is 30 miles and 37 minutes from Sawgrass to the Clermont Costco. Some people make that drive, others feel it's too far away. 37 minutes is about the same as driving from Ocala to the Villages. Some from Ocala will do that, others won't. Those living in Gainesville will be looking at twice the commitment.

I guess we will find out either way.

I drive to Summerfield 3-4 times a week via 301 as I also live south of 44. The only other option is going Morse with all the roundabouts and at some point cutting over to 301. The worst part of 301 is the 2 lane portion south of 44, once you are past that it moves and you can time the traffic lights to keep moving reasonably well.
I will probably shop the new Costco when it opens but honestly I don’t go there that often that it’s a big deal. I don’t go on the weekend, I learned that lesson at Clermont!
If people would just slow down and realize getting someplace does not need to be a timed event it would help. After all most of us are at least semi-retired.

Interesting. Ten days ago the gas pumps were in and the building appeared to be complete. I don't recall the condition of the parking lot (leveled, smoothed, paved, ???) but remember thinking I would be surprised if the store wasn't open by the end of July. Do you really think opening will be end of July? So far Costco coming soon website doesn’t list TV yet. Once it’s listed opening is usually 60 days ish.
They are just listing Costco openings in August. So far no active website for hiring, which for Costco is at least 40 days prior to open. One of lower management is leaving Clearmont to work in TV. He has zero insider information, but hoping for September Grand opening

I have nothing to go on other than how quickly they have gotten to this point. Your experience with the "coming soon" website is probably more accurate.
It could very well be that 80% of the work takes 20% of the time and what they have remaining, mostly the parking lot and all of the inside work, will take much longer.

On June 30, Costco will open its doors an hour earlier, at 9 a.m., for Executive members, giving them exclusive access before the regular store hours begin at 10 a.m. This change applies to all Costco locations, Monday through Friday, and on Sundays. On Saturdays, Executive members can shop from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., according to Kiplinger.com.

I am now in my tenth year living in The Villages and don't see any reason to move elsewhere. However, being kind, one might say that the story of what folks want and need is mostly the same. Like Costco, Costco, Costco. When are they coming to the Villages, and now that they are, it's Traffic, traffic, traffic. Why are they building here? Move it here, move it there, just move it anywhere besides here! LOL The Villages is always a chuckle of disputed opinions before and after the new news of what has been begged for.

I work out of the Villages (Ocala)...NOBODY will drive to the Villages from Ocala...NOBODY will drive from Clermont. FACT: In the 14 years, I have lived here, one constant complaint is the traffic. SAMS will never be outdone by Costco as the FAMILIES that live on the perimeter (Lady Lake, Fruitland Park, Leesburg, Summerfield and Bellview will NOT choose to join here instead of Sams because of the chaos the traffic will cause..YES, I am "DAILY" outside the bubble....I CHOOSE BJ's because with my RT sided gas tank, I am in and out in less than 10 minutes in high season and there is ONLY chaos getting in and out on the weekend.

I am looking forward to Costco because we could never take advantage of the frozen or chilled foods in Wesley Chapel. Our trips to Costco must, to make DH happy, include lunch at the Mediterranean Grill down the street. That makes keeping food frozen for that long of a time difficult.
For dry goods, I can always order delivery. But it will be nice to just run up there and see what's on offer in the fridge/freezer section. After the initial opening rush wears off a bit.

Ok, looks like road construction through Summerfield done on 301. Still single lanes with middle turning lane. At 7am bumper to bumper traffic heading south and almost as busy heading north. Naturally little progress at 484 and 75 construction. Summerfield will be bottleneck if not 4 lanes like south of Summerfield. Not mention the bottle necks at 301 and 466 left turning lanes. So, yes IMO you can say there was NO planning. Naturally if you don’t live in area it’s not going to affect YOU, until you go down these streets mentioned. It don’t affect me till I go that way. I do think something needs to be done with that golf cart tunnel under CR101. It probably will not do well with heavy traffic. Maybe just a golf cart lane across CR101 and some stop signs before and after it .

Big chain stores, like Costco, require a certain number of residents per mile. This demographic must include a range of age and income. Costco has a high volume of commercial, professional,
governmental, and church/charity buyers. I do not know the actual numbers, but I would not be surprised if these sales are much larger than personal. It is mandatory the site chosen is close to MANY as well as a variety of businesses, restaurants, offices, churches, schools, local and state government buildings. IMO, they did their homework.

Do you think shopping at this Costco will be Any Different than shopping at any Costco in any state?
In 20 years at our 8 Costco’s fuel lines are 10 plus car deep in every lane. Parking is at a premium within hour of opening. Checkout lines are 5-10 shoppers deep, food court is 5-15 minute wait.
The only difference this Costco will have golf carts along with cars that will be finding place to park. For us it doesn’t change our shopping, any everyday item comes to my front door, just like Amazon, Kroger, Walmart+. The need to shop crowded isles as an outing isn’t a priority.
We have the option of Costco shopping at 9am, because of membership status. For us no different, than waiting in line at Publix yesterday for 10 minutes, while a gentleman had in depth conversation with cashier about his dog,(with pics) that he can no longer bring in the store.
Which sometimes I am good with because many older gens are in need of human contact. Thankfully Costco cashiers will not have that issue, as their goal is too get the customer checked out quickly.

First of all, Costco isn’t the only trick in town. Sam’s and BJ’s are close by. Ocala already has those discount outlets and a whole lot more shopping than here. What sane person would bypass those for a Costco? It wouldn’t be worth the trip to drive from Ocala or anywhere northward to even shop at Costco.

What sane person would bypass those for a Costco? It wouldn’t be worth the trip to drive from Ocala or anywhere northward to even shop at Costco.
There has always been a Costco in Wesley Chapel and even one at Claremont. How many times a month do you travel to one of those?
Long time Costco members have been driving to WC, Orlando, or Clearmont from TV. I have never in 20 years drove by a Costco parking lot that was less than 75% parking. We belong to Sam’s but after 20 years dropped membership as soon as Costco was announced. BJ was a one and done, I don’t coupon shop, not enough product I shop for. BJs only bonus lots of parking any time of day and basically no waiting in line for inside or fuel.
As far as sane shoppers, this week at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and KK, in Gainesville, talk was about the new Costco opening. Many employees live near Ocala, so they will shop in TV.
Up north we drive past one of 8 Costco every week. Each Costco uniquely had different products along with stock items, Only shop Costco about once a month, everything else comes to front door. So same day delivery from Costco will be used weekly for us, no parking required.

We have never lived near a Costco and therefore never been a member. Have gone with our kids and very impressed and plan to get membership after things settle down. Interesting as Sams has never been overly crowded.
Costco like Trader Joe’s has a cult following. What you will be amazed is Costco customer service, and their product accountability. That ship has sailed at 90% of today’s retail.

Exactly! And they will have no patience with golf carts driving slow.
You wouldn’t be able to buy much at Costco driving a golf cart anyway.
That is why I am putting a hitch on my cart with a 6-foot trailer. Almost ready to go!

Wanna understand the “Costco cult”?
‘Costco COST 0.02%increase; green up pointing triangle was recently sued by Lululemon LULU -0.84%decrease; red down pointing triangle for allegedly selling cheap knockoffs of the athleisure brand’s premium clothing. One of those products is a pair of comfortable, fashionable, wildly popular Lululemon men’s pants that came out a decade ago and cost $128.
A few years ago, Costco began selling a version of those pants that looked and felt awfully similar—for $20.
And you don’t exactly need a law degree to read this legal document and see why so many people are so completely obsessed with Costco.
Those pants were part of the Kirkland Signature private label, which is based on a simple but powerful idea: sell products of a high quality at a low price. With that philosophy, Kirkland has become essential to Costco’s success. No less a Costco authority than co-founder Jim Sinegal describes the creation of Kirkland three decades ago as one of the crucial developments in the history of the company.
The store brand now accounts for roughly a third of Costco’s revenue—and it’s growing faster than the company as a whole. Costco’s total sales have almost doubled since 2017. Kirkland’s have almost tripled.
At this point, it’s bigger than many of the world’s biggest companies. . Kirkland alone brought in $86 billion last year—more than all of Procter & Gamble. In fact, this brand known for no-frills affordability generated roughly the same annual revenue as luxury giant LVMH.
It doesn’t just drive sales. It also breeds loyalty. It gives people a reason to become members—and members a reason to keep coming back. If the cult of Costco had a Kool-Aid, it would definitely be Kirkland Signature.
Perhaps the most important thing that Kirkland does is bring down the price of other brands.
To understand why, it helps to have a basic understanding of Costco economics. The company stocks fewer items than traditional retailers and makes up for smaller margins with absurdly large volumes. It sells branded products at no more than 14% above cost, even if that means leaving extra profit on the table. For Kirkland products only, Costco makes an exception and permits a markup of 15%. ‘ WSJ July11/25

Would bet most of their profit comes from selling memberships. Brilliantly run company.

Not sure about that, for example, my full annual membership cost is refunded from my purchases if I buy enough.
