I'll tell you one not to use, Mayflower. Worst experience I ever had. Damage, lots of missing boxes, furniture put back together backwards, lazy workers, and an even lazier driver.

Thanks ! I am looking for both positive and negative feedback from people who have used interstate moving companies. 😉

Pods
I second the PODS recommendation. Referring to the actual company called: PODS.
I don't have experience with any others companies that use similar containers.

What to know:
1 - You have to pack and unpack (or hire others) the POD yourself. It isn't hard to find people to do that work. On the Villages end, I can recommend - Vincent, owner of Unique Furniture and Moving 352-433-3088. He's solid and very clever.

2 - Keep a small notebook or couple of pieces of paper (that you don't lose) to keep notes about the details of how the POD service will be performed and other details. This really helps b/c moving is a somewhat frantic experience and having written down important aspects can save you from crazytown and mistakes/misunderstandings.

3 - Be sure to use the tie downs in the container. They are metal loops placed at intervals along the long walls of the container. You use either roping or bungee cords and that partially holds the contents from shifting forward which prevents damage.

4 - If the POD is going into storage in Ocala for a bit - Get 2 or 3 of these which can be hung from the tie down loops. DampRid-Fresh-Scent-Hanging-Moisture-Absorber Also, realize that they deliver from the Ocala facility to various parts of TV only certain days of the week. For example, where I live, they deliver on Tues and Sat. Knowing what day(s) they deliver to your area will allow you to schedule better and save you money by getting prompt delivery rather than having to wait another week and pay them for more storage and the cost of wherever you're staying.

5 - Don't buy their insurance. I figured as much but, clarified with them, that the insurance only covers if THEY somehow damage your belongings because there was an accident. Minus an accident whatever damage occurred to your stuff inside the container was because you didn't pack it appropriately. That isn't hard to do so, btw. But, I hired guys for that and used the tie downs.

The whole process went very smoothly because they know what they're doing and I kept track of the relevant details. Cost for 16 ft POD from metro Cincinnati was about $2700, paid loaders on that end about $700, unloaded here myself except for a few bigger pieces. Vincent did that for $175.
