In selected areas, DirectTV is pushing their DirectTV Stream service in place of using a satellite dish. It appears, DirectTV is going to be phasing out their dish service in several areas at some point. There are three packages available and from what I can see it looks like they have "all" the channels that anyone would want. The only problem, after fees and taxes it's more expensive than YouTubeTV. I looked at it at a friends home who we converted to Quantum fiber and the picture quality and user interface is very good and their app runs on all the popular streaming devices.

They advertise all you need is an internet connection and streaming device or you can use their streaming device.

Interesting how the industry is changing.

In my opinion, YouTube TV and an inexpensive internet connection seems to be the best solution right now. But once you cut the cord and stream, there are many options available to try to meet your specific needs.

Regarding Directv stream, if you use their device you get a remote that has usable channel numbers. If you stream with any other device like Firestick, Roku or AppleTV you don't have that ability. We've been a directv customer since 1998 and really like being able to input a channel #.

When we moved here, we looked at Youtube TV but it doesn't have all of the channels that directv offers. So we elected to just go to Directv stream and not satellite at that point as 1: we didn't want a dish on our new roof and 2: with the weather here, we didn't want outages and 3: the channel numbers were identical to satellite. Just set in our ways I guess. Stream always works regardless of the weather.

We recently signed up for DirectTV on a five day trial using AppleTV as a streaming device. I also noticed that the sound and video both were better quality than YouTubeTV but we ran into a couple other issues that were deal killers for us.

DirectTV has a four-hour timeout 'feature' that cannot be disabled. This was a problem for us as we prefer to leave the tv on all night while sleeping.

We also had an issue where the sound would randomly just go out and require us to shut down the app and restart it.

Your mileage may vary, but these issues caused us to go back to YoutubeTV.

Thanks for this as I was just wondering the other day if those dishes were still needed with all the streaming options available now. I think my parents still have the dish so I will need to ask them if they have looked at other options. BTW, I am not sure what you mean by inputting the channel number as frankly you have that same/similar option with others using the guide and inputting the channel number or can you save to favorites?
