I use a free app called Golfshot. The free version works great. Gives you accurate distances to front, middle and back of greens. Set up on your iPhone and then put it away. It syncs with your Apple Watch.

If you have an Apple Watch, get the upgraded (paid) version of Golf Shot. As of last year, it now gives you swing metrics on the course or on the range and a raft of other information. I have 1300 rounds on my GolfShot account, it's the best APP by far.

I have used the Apple Watch app “HOLE19” for about 4 years. It has all of golf courses in the Villages and I think it’s great.

On a related topic, I prefer to use a laser rangefinder, but it has become a little more difficult and time consuming. All the Championship courses in the Village’s used to have prism type reflectors on the top of the flagsticks, which made it very easy and fast to acquire the exact yardage to the pin. A few years back all the reflectors suddenly disappeared. I have asked several golf employees why the reflectors were removed and nobody seems to know why. Does anyone know the actual real reason why? Removing the reflectors certainly isn’t consistent with keeping the pace of play moving along.

More expensive and new range finders don't need prisms. If there's another reason, I cant figure out what it is.

SwingU has a free and a paid version. Free gives yardage and a scorecard (stokes and putts). It retains your scores. It works for me, a mediocre golfer.

I know 3-4 people who are big wheels at Arccos. After them bugging me for 2 years, I put Arccos sensors on a couple of my clubs. I ripped them off after 9 holes. What a PIA. Talk about distracting!

That said Arccos has 2 statistician (Lou Stagner & Hutch), who spend their life analyzing data. Arccos has a database of over 1,000,000,000 golf shots. Hutch's analysis of data and golfers proclivities, are amazing. Stagner's a jerk in my opinion and nothing more than a rookie engagement farmer.

Both Stagner & Hutch are frequent posters on X and offer fascinating insights into golf statistics.

There are number of simple programs that will give you GPS distance on your watch. Personally, I think GolfShot Pro offers the best & most information ... but you can certainly use the free GolfShot App to give you simple GPS distances.

18 Birdies is also a free app that works great. I just use for distances and can keep score . It syncs either Watch. If you use it on IPhone, you can move the pin on the green to its location for more accuracy and find distances to bunkers, etc. Paid version has many more features. Love it!

I carry a range finder just in case i need it. . I constantly practice estimating distances without any devices within 200 yards as long as I can see yardage markers. I find after playing the same course 4-5 times, I don't need to rely on technology to estimate distances for club selections. .

its a detail vs accuracy issue. .
more detail doesn't result in better accuracy. .

proper club selection and more consistent swings/contact creates better accuracy

temperature messes the most with my distances. . both with swing muscle tightness and ball flex. . hate the clank of New England golf in the early spring (late winter in reality) . . . and then drive to TV and hit 10-30 yards longer in 90 degrees

and the pros make it look too easy on tv, same with all pros versus amateurs. . .

Someone who's shooting in the 90's, probably only needs to know exact distance, within 10 yards.

I'm typically accurate within 3 yards, with an 8 Iron or less ... I want to know my exact distance.

not disagreeing Brian, there are always different level of golfers, however, my post was more in line with the suggestion about which clubs should "retirees" have in their bag and other retiree suggestions. Is a range finder going to help if you don't have a consistent swing or incorrect club selection? money would be better spent practicing for consistency and knowing the average distance of each club, than buying a range finder and thinking that knowing the exact distance will help your golf. the detail versus accuracy point

The post was also about muscle strengthening and stretching though indirectly. After playing other sports with "retirees", muscle conditioning and stretching may marginally improve abilities, but c&s is always more about injury prevention and enjoyment longevity. I do recommend stretching for retirees especially for colder weather injury prevention. . especially if you have sprinter muscle types, fast twitch. . or have had past injuries, such as herniated discs, and muscular scar tissue. . .
