So there was a thread that started a couple of days ago, asking about Apps for an Apple Watch.

I thought I'd post some information about one available app, because it's so great. I have no connection with the company or software, but I've been a enthusiastic subscriber since it was introduced.

If you get the Pro Edition, it's about $100/year. There's a free edition, but it doesn't do much, other than keep score and give you distances. You need an Apple Watch & iPhone for the really cool features.

It gives you GPS distance. It gives you AR views of the hole. Flyby view. It keeps score all by itself. It estimates the club you used, based on your input and history. As far as I know, it has every course in The Villages (Exec & Champ).

It measures your tempo, your rhythm, your hand speed, wrist path, transition, backswing arc, impact plane, wrist rotation, & wrist close rate. It also calculates Strokes Gained metrics and tracks your handicap. It has Green reading information, similar to a PGA Pro's yardage book for many courses.

All the above, without human interaction, other than confirming your score, which you do on your watch. Takes less than 10 seconds/hole.

Interesting and thanks for the recommendation. If it is truly without human interaction, it might be appealing to me. The problem I had with GolfLogix app is that most times I forget to enter club or next shot or whatever. Typically I use range finder for distance; only use GPS on blind shots...maybe. I go four holes and realize I forgot to enter anything and have to swipe on my phone to catch up. All of this is to say, when I'm golfing, I'm golfing...not thinking about tracking or entering info into my watch/phone.

The metrics and stats are certainly interesting. Do you find that they actually help your game? If so, how? Real time looking at swing plane on your shots? Post-game by seeing what you may have been doing wrong, therefore knowing what to work on at the range?

Totally agree, when I’m golfing, I’m golfing, and I don’t want any distractions. When I’m done with golf, I’m done until I get on the first tee box for the next round. After golfing, I’m on to swimming laps, riding my bike, working around the house, dancing or playing cards with my wife, walking the dog, or doing one of the many other things that can’t all be fit into the rest of the day. In my opinion, Mobil devices should not be allowed on the golf course, leave the dam thing home and focus on golf. We did just fine without them for a good portion of our lives, when things were much simpler.

The extent of my interaction while playing, is limited to less than 15 seconds per hole. Confirm score & # of putts and occasionally checking other data. You can be as vigilant as you want to be. If were to check everything in real time, you'd be at about 20-30 seconds per hole. You can do it while driving or walking, so it's not like it's wasting time.

I use it on the range, constantly. I'm always working on the same things on the range, Tempo & Club Face path. My watch tracks both, so I look at it after ever shot.

While playing, I use it primarily for distance inside 100 yards (estimate) and I'll sometimes check my Tempo & Club Path. I don't have the newest Apple Watch, so I don't get "wrist closure rate" & a couple of other data points.

Personally, I think the best data, is "trends". I can pull up the details of any round I've ever played or rounds over a given period of time. I can then tell if my putting is off or GIR's are out of whack. Same with driving or putting. I average hitting about 75% of fairways and my "miss" is equally divided between "left" & "right" ... which tells me, my club head path is reasonably good.

Knowing what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong, is huge. In the case of this program, there's no guessing ... it's real data.

Thank you that's very helpful. I'll look into it further.

I have Golfshot Pro on my iPhone 15 pro, and I have an iPhone 7. While it works fine on the phone, it really is a battery eater on the watch. I start with 100% on the watch battery, and can make it through 12-13 holes (a little over 2 to 21/2 hours).

Two things you can do. 1, replace your Apple Watch Battery (don't go to a local place, have Apple do it). My Apple Watch will get 27 holes, running GolfShot Pro, with Swing ID.

Go to your preferences and stop using the GPS in your Apple Watch. If I get to the golf course and my watch doesn't have 70%, I shut off the Watch GPS and that extends battery life, significantly.

But yes, GolfShot can be a battery hog and you need to manage it a bit. I walked 18 holes today, with watch GPS on. I used about 50% power (it might also depend on if you have a newer Apple Watch).

Golfshot is a handy app but they seem to struggle getting GPS for new courses. I have been asking them for over a year to add Shallow Creek. They keep claiming they use Google Maps and it does not include Shallow Creek data. Every other app seems to have new courses added pretty quickly. This is a big issue.

Go to your Preferences and make sure the App is set up to automatically add new courses in YOUR AREA. You can set various geographical areas to automatically update ... if you don't have FL/Southeast set as a preference, it won't update with new courses in that area.

See another post above this. Shallow Creek is available on GolfShot.

I use Golf Pad. Anybody else use it? Premium is just $29.99 per year. Just re-upped on a 4th of July special for $14.99 for the next year.

It does everything Golf Shot does. Seems most of my golfing fellows use 18 Birdies. I’ve been using Golf Pad for several years now so I’m used to it. Use it on iPhone, don’t have an Apple Watch. Good App at a reasonable price.

It does not. It's an entirely different APP, geared towards sharing information.

It doesn't provide any swing metrics.

18Birdies is the only other App I know of, that uses an Apple Watch to generate swing metrics.

Agree. I also use it. You can also track swings during practice. Golfshot is great
