I did notice a couple of raccoons having a tea party over plastic bag left at end of drive way though.

No kidding. My wife and I were taking about that. We just moved here from north Dallas area, and you could never put trash out like they do here. We had coyote's bobcat's racoon's skunk's rat's possums.

North of 44 over 10 years we only had human trash pickers. South of 44 mama bear, cubs, have so much trash just on one street, they rarely have to stray far. They do food shop on many neighborhoods fruit trees.

The coyotes, bobcats don’t want dead stuff, but turkey vultures and crows find white trash bags worthy of a drive by. I haven’t seen any raccoons, but couple of armadillos wander occasionally

The raccoons have been hitting our neighborhood pretty hard lately. We’ve gone back to putting our trash out in the morning instead of the night before.

The word is out, your neighborhood puts on a fine spread for the raccoon's parties.:beer3:

I’ve begun putting my trash bags in delivery boxes (i.e Amazon). Probably not good against larger wildlife, but I’m sure it will be a challenge for the birds.

Speaking of trash…..to make it easier on those folks that pick up our trash, please consolidate it as much as possible. Remember that each piece must be picked up by hand, one by one, and thrown into the back of the truck. Putting out numerous small bags that could have been consolidated into one, makes their job that much harder and time consuming.

Not our guys. If we have three bags out they grab them all with the same hand. If there's any boxes, they'll grab that with the other.

Raccoons are a pain, the dexterity those critters have with the little hands, instead of paws, on their front legs makes them efficient dumpster divers. I wish they didn’t pick up the trash so early in our neighborhood, just about everyone puts out their trash the night before.

I'm surprised there aren't rats the size of a Great Dane.

Every house in the villages has a garbage disposal. With the exception of large bones, there is no reason to put garbage in your trash bag. No food, no animals!

In my neighborhood, trash days are Monday and Thursday morning. Bears have a difficult time using calendars, so it’s hard for them to show up when there is trash near the street.

It seems the animals have focused on the traditional white kitchen bags as a sign of possible food source.
Just by chance I bought grey kitchen bags that are scented, like lavender, and it seems that the color or the scent or both seems to dissuade the birds from bothering them.

We the same animals here and have not had a problem.

I've been in Mallory Square for seven years. I've never seen or heard of a problem with animals. Keep in mind that trash is supposed to be put out after dark. Some people put trash out in the morning before pickup, so the garbage sits in the hot sun for 24 hours. I can imagine that might bring unwanted critters.

Doesn't trash put out the night before also "sit in the hot sun"?

My trash people come between 10 & 11 am, so it only makes sense to put out my trash in the morning before pickup...

I have discovered in my area crows only pick at white garbage bags and not the black ones?

In 8 years south of 44 never seen a bear or heard of one getting into trash. There is a very occasional sighting but not a nuisance problem at all. People letting their dogs crap and not picking it up is more of a problem. Using black bags will solve the crows from getting into the trash.

Yeah! Instead of four 40lb bags, consolidate one 160lb bag. 😡

That's a ridiculous amount of trash for a couple of senior citizens to create in 3 or 4 days.

"Surprised bears haven't discovered Villages garbage day."
Who or what surprised the bears and traumatized them so badly that they can't smell when the garbage is everywhere in the neighborhood.
Poor bears. 😢

I have never had a problem with the garbage in any color bag, putting it out the night before. But I don’t include food scraps. My neighbor rented out her place to nice bur naive people. They put their garbage in white, almost see through, bags with food scraps, and the black birds did congregate around. I sprayed their bags with Lysol and the birds flew away. That was the end of it.

Bears? Raccoons? Squirrels? Rats? How can they live here and possibly afford the amenities fees unless they are in the "historic section where they pay less?

LOL

My trash pick up in my villa can be anywhere between 7AM to 3PM or later. Seems like truck driver skip over my villa most time till end of route. While for weeks at time pickup before 8 AM. Very inconsistent in my neighborhood.

Our trash goes in an Amazon box to keep critters at bay. We have a mama bear that lives in the woods just down the street. She just moved out her two year old cubs, one male one female.

Three times a week she walks past our rear or front cameras. We have acres of prairie that she meanders for hours. Just getting her weight up around 160-180. We had bears in all of our 5 villages, but each new builds, since 2007, wildlife was plentiful. Only two villages had panthers.

A New resident thought neighbors or workers were pilfering her newly ripe fruit trees, until pics were posted of mama bear grocery shopping in her yard.

We don’t have much a dog problem, many residents have cameras, to capture wildlife, so dog walkers don’t take a chance.

Not everything can go in the garbage detector. Bones and carcasses to name just two.

I can put bones and carcasses in mine - in fact, it is recommended in the manual to sharpen the teeth. But I have a 1 hp unit which replaced the weak thingy put in by the builder. I don’t know if they can do bones. If you have to put out food garbage you can use a scented garbage bag and put the food scraps in a shopping bag to contain the smell.
