It sounded like the commercial added she had good genes to look that pretty in her jeans.
It is a touchy subject given world history. Seems innocent on her part but kind of stupid on the part of the company putting out the ad. Like throwing a big rock in a pond that is already rippling. If your goal is a peaceful scene on that pond. If it is to get a lot of air time then it has seemed to work. I do not know if such a tactic will sell more jeans or not. It might turn people away.

I see *how* it happened but what I can't figure out is *why* it happened. Someone took the time to think of the seven degrees of separation to get from an advertisement of questionable taste to being offended about acknowledging genetics.
They wanted to be offended and they wanted to disparage either the actress, the product, or the company but why?

Well, I now know something I did not before - American Eagle sells jeans. Not those crappy Levi's, or my go-to Wranglers, but an option for something a little nicer, more dressy occasion than working in the back 40. Like a casual dinner out.

Would a nice restaurant be OK with American Eagle jeans?

Well, as long as your definition of a "nice" restaurant isn't one that primarily serves burnt coffee, granola, or açaí bowls.

My mom (92) understands the ad, speaking with her granddaughter this week.
She laughed LuLu doesn’t need Sydney, but I can think of 20 or so brands would definitely benefit.
She then pointed out, I wore that AE Jean style in the 70s. They are in the blue closet size 2. Mine are Blue too!

My mom is of Native American Heritage, with bright Blue eyes. She grew up with worry she would be hung in the barn as a half breed like those before her.
Racist has never been in her vocabulary, we are a multicultural family. So pick a race it’s somewhere in our family tree. Or dust to dust in the Church White, Black, or Red Cemetery.

Still not sure how that relates to the ad. Guess I'll have to watch it.
As to ancestry, history is ugly to everyone at some point. But once I learned that all humanity goes back to Africa, I figured we are all to some degree mixed races, and species. Racism makes no sense. The ones most likely to be only half breed would be Sub-Saharan Africans whose people never left Africa and migrated to the rest of the world.

Different controversies with this and the Brooke Shields add (I don't recall the Beyonce add).
This one has been criticized by some as having a seven-degrees-of-freedom-type connection to the belief in eugenics, racism, and white supremacy. The Brooke Shields ad was criticized for sexualizing a 15 year old.

Do not agree with this at all. It’s because people are looking for reason to call racist!
There is nothing wrong with the ad
It’s obvious that she is a beautiful woman because of her genes, not because of any surgeries, not because she dies her hair, not because she put some way too much make up. She’s just simply beautiful and you get simply beautiful like that because of your biological genes.

That would be tough, as AE jeans didn't exist in the 70's.
The company started in 1977 as a retail storefront and didn't produce jeans with their name on them, until 1990.

That does not seem to be true. It would probably be a talking head on some 24 hour news station that started this Sweeny tempest in a teacup. And then others who had motives to continue it . Ratings, stock, or some other personal stake . Or as distraction.
I do find "genes" to be a very loaded word as far as historical, psychological, and sociological contexts are concerned.

You have seen nothing? I'll bet you have, but just don't recognize it when it's something you support. For examples I'm afraid it would become almost instantly political. You have seen nothing? I'll bet you have, but just don't recognize it when it's something you support. For examples I'm afraid it would become almost instantly political. Alex, in the category of geographical location names I will answer the question. What is THE GULF OF AMERICA?

What does renaming the gulf have to do with Cancel Culture? Nothing.
What I support is personal responsibility rather than blaming others, patriotism instead of hatred of America, and allowing people to apologize for their (real, not fake outrage) mistakes without having their lives and careers ruined. If you disagree with any of that, I feel sorry for you.

I looked at the ad after this post, but what she says is true, parents do pass down their genes to their children. And both her eyes and jeans are blue. Sort of like saying the moon is in the sky. And she is happy. No teen angst etc Hey, you want to get offended by it… go ahead.

Arbitrary renaming international locations or places because the place name was given by a culture you are mad at is most definitely a cancel culture move on the highest order of overinflated ego, designed to show distain for another country and culture, imo.
I support personal responsibility also. I also am also a patriot who proudly served this country for 6 years, part of that time in Vietnam. I, like you, love my country. And I, like you, believe in allowing apologies for mistakes. I also believe in acknowledging our history, good and bad, and going forward to make our country a place where all can feel respected, appreciated, safe, secure, equal and free.

Places are renamed all the time. Depends on who is in power, eg Stalingrad became Volgograd after “our father, Stalin” in Russia became “that genocide monster, Stalin” since he killed 20 million of his own countrymen to implement his communist woke ideology. Etc. reinterpreting history is on-going, everywhere.

I'm pretty sure the renaming of neither the city nor the reputation had nothing to do with the communist ideology or being woke (which Stalin wasn't). The renaming had everything to do with the rejection of who the man actually was and what he actually did/ordered, ///

She was asked to do this because she was doing very well professionally.
I think she was in a show that I watched but I can't recall anything about her.
This most likely will draw more attention to her and her acting career. Here's hoping the political aspect of that attention doesn't wind up hurting her.
I see nothing political about the ad.

And whether the ad will sell more jeans or not, it has certainly turned some people away.

What else has been changed? Siam? Shanghai? Ceylon? Burma? Swaziland? Persia? Holland? New Amsterdam? Bombay? Saigon?
No matter what else happens in this world, there is at least this one universal concept: No matter what you call it, no matter how much one despises it, no matter how much one pretends it does not occur, this one thing is true: "To The Victor Go The Spoils."
If the crazies in Seattle succeeded in long-term holding of their unsanctioned spaces, they would have the spoils of the space, the name of the space, the governance of the space, and existence. All spoils. There are examples all over, even if one eschews them.

Did Communism end in Russia after Stalin or does it still exist today? If it still exists today then renaming Stalingrad had little to do with Communism.
Most people using "woke" as a pejorative have no idea what the term means. It is beyond the scope of this thread but I suspect you and I different definitions for the term and how/where it should be applied.
While you and your parents were standing in the middle of the pool was it the communism, the "woke" (whatever that means to you), or the brutality that made it wet?

it would seem the math is on the president's side of the equation. Your offering opinions. I'm offering math.
The math: The Gulf of Mexico was named as such in 1552. The landmass known as Texas was part of Mexico.
Texas didn't become a state until the 1800's, after the Texan-Mexican war.
In the 1550's, Florida was inhabited by indigenous peoples, and Ponce de Leon, from SPAIN, came and brought assorted diseases with him. Florida didn't become a state until the 1800's.
The Gulf of Mexico was the Gulf of Mexico for 300 years BEFORE Texas and Florida became states. Another 150 years, totaling 450 years (give or take) until the US government thought it'd be a great idea to change its name.
My opinion - when the USA is the USA for more years than the Gulf has been the Gulf of Mexico, then maybe America will have earned the right to change its name. The gulf has only occupied the edges of the US since the mid-1800's, and that's less than 200 years. So get back to me in 250 years and we can talk about what I will call it then. Until then, it is, and has been, the Gulf of Mexico.

Well, actually the Communist think they invented what we call “woke” here in the US except they took it much further. I can give examples from who they put as university presidents (hint they had no schooling) to empowerment of women (taking young children from their homes and families, housing them together - so mother could work) all driven by the ideology. The wealthy were not taxed, everything they had; home, land was taken from them and made “public” which meant it went to members of the party. And much, much more. And, by the way, if you disagreed you were executed, sometimes made into mince meat. My mother had to actually teach her young students, who were called “Pioneers” from grade 1, to report their parent (if they still lived at home) if a parent said anything against the party. This is not fiction. I know you must find these things hard to believe, and you’d really like to be able to explain it away, but my family actually lived it.

It has been the Gulf of Mexico since the 16th century. History and tradition! Not just my opinion. Recognized globally as the Gulf of Mexico. Trying to change the name is, imo, just silly.

so a naming ceremony 600 years ago attended by a few invading and murderous conquistadores supercedes the right of an american president to rename our own territorial waters to honor our nation? I don't think so . That privilege was earned for the president by the sacrifices of our nation's dead and wounded in the cause of world peace.
The U S. Navy has fought and won in 2 world wars and today it's 16 ballistic missile submarines patrol the world's oceans with their over 2500 strategic nuclear warheads to keep the world free and safe from evil people. America has been called the arsenal of democracy, not mexico
america has lost patriots in ww1, 2, korea, vietnam, gulf and iraq wars
not mexico
america has lost over 72,135 american naval personnel in ww2 fighting for freedom on the world's seas
not mexico
even today america's navy patrols the oceans to preserve the right of navigation for all countries to sail upon
not mexico
the blood and sacrifice of us navy patriots alone justifies the presidents order to rename the gulf to honor american exceptionalism.
The order to rename it the gulf of america is in effect for all U S. Citizens even those who don't like it.
You can have a watch party for 250 years if you so desire as history dustbin awaits.
