Golf cart insurance needed? $132/yr reasonable for Yamaha 2020?

We just moved to the TV and purchased a 2020 Yamaha golf cart for $8,500. Progressive quoted me $132/yr. It looks like it is mostly liability. Is it needed and does this sound reasonable?

We have a 2019 with Progressive and also pay $130.

I believe insurance on the cart is required by our Umbrella policy so it wasn't a choice for us.

At the same time in today's litigious society, especially here in the Villages with a lot of people in the squares and on the paths, liability coverage seemed like a really good idea.

You absolutely need liability insurance on your golf cart. That price is reasonable.

Some people say it is included in their home insurance, but that is only for theft. You need to be insured in case of accident where you, a rider, or the other cart's passengers are injured. It does happen with sad frequency. Some are even killed.

Insurance on a golf cart isn't "required." But it is a definite must-have, regardless. We pay under $100 for ours, but we have 2 golf carts, a truck, and a car, all under an umbrella package so we get a lot of discounts.

I had heard and seen people paying 80 or 90 a year for a cart when we got here. When we bought ours with all the bells and whistles, we wanted it protected. Yamaha 2022 - AAA $172 a year full coverage. Was going to be cheaper just for liability, but to protect us completely for an extra $6 bucks a month....priceless.

Previous 98 EZGO - 50 bucks a year liability in our old town.

I’ve been with Progressive for 2+ years and pay $113 for two 2018 Yamaha carts.

Golf carts like cars here in The Villages have accidents. And accidents get lawyers involved and if your at fault you can loose your retirement savings and even put a lien on your home if you do not have Homestead filed.

FYI we have our golf cart insured with Progressive, and the second year of no accidents the premium went down.

That is very close to what we pay for our 2022 Yamaha. I know when I questioned it recently they also said it was partially based on the price we told them we paid for it when new.

Same $$$ as mine. Like all insurance...you don't need it until you do. And the way MANY cart owners operate around here, I wouldn't be without it.

We paid a similar amount to Progressive for our 2018 Yamaha after considerable research found it to be quite reasonable.

Cost, value, and price.

Insurance policies are simply one risk transfer tool, the insured pays a $ amount certain to transfer a given amount of risk to the insurer. Sounds simple enough, right? If we break it down, the value of the cart is a known, e.g., $xxx.xx for a replacement or repair in excess of the deductible which is retained (premium + deductible = cost). However, when it comes to 3rd party liability as a result of an alleged accident that is another story.

One way to look at the value of the product and premium paid is what we risk by not obtaining liability coverage on a cart? Consider asking ourselves “what do I have to loose if the worst were to occur?” Trading $130 per year for the knowledge that my defense and if needed an indemnity obligation to a 3rd party would be covered is to me worth all of the liability insurance policies (primary and umbrella/excess) I purchase.

At this point in life why should we risk an uncertain outcome of an injury or an accident for a small amount? The physical damage to my cart, well that’s simple mathematics. Rate/Value decision, if the cart is old and after deductible it should be a simple decision.

As noted by other commentators on this thread many feel the price, value and cost are worth it however the only reference to required golf cart insurance is for LSV’s and for that see the FL statutes.

I couldn’t locate any current figures for 2025 showing what percentage of golf cart owners in Florida—or in The Villages—purchase insurance. Although liability risks and legal requirements significantly differ between traditional carts and LSVs, available information doesn’t include actual adoption rates.

I recommend always consulting legal, finance and insurance professionals when making such decisions. My notes here are for education purposes only and simply my opinion, and should not be considered risk management advice.

For what it is worth (comparisons-wise), I pay about $11/month for each of my jet skis up north via Progressive-Hawaii.

My cart insurance is up north with a large company (Erie) that I do not believe insures in Florida. It is also reasonably priced. Will find the paperwork later and add to this post.

We insure a 2016 CRV, 2019 Ezgo, 2025 Evolution, & Umbrella policy with Progressive. Our 2019 Ezgo has just liability and towing for $80.00 a year and seems a close comparison to your 2020 Yamaha (not sure if gas vs electric and/or multi discount makes a difference)

Cannot stress enough how much insurance is needed even though it is not required. My husband had an accident, and the insurance was greatly appreciated!

You also neeed Uninsured and Underinsured coverage on the cart in case you are injured by someone causing serious injuries to you or anyone in the cart.

Just a suggestion. If you are paying a lot for an umbrella policy, check with Allstate and State Farm. Both of these companies offer up to $1million in liability coverage as part of an auto policy. I save money by skipping the separate umbrella policy and opting for the million dollar liability coverage.
