Does anyone have a problem with a neighbor that has a barking dog? Does your neighbor just let their dog out and bark and bark? I am thinking about a CYV or a home with a wall behind it and am concerned about about barking dogs. BTW, I own a dog and love her to pieces!

We live behind a villa wall and we have a doggy. The dog behind us does bark a lot, if we come outside. Finley (who has been known to be a bit bark-y himself) generally just ignores the other dog - though in the beginning he used to bark back - and that had me worried that all the neighbors would be upset.
Mostly, I don't even hear her barking anymore - or maybe she has just gotten used to us.

Missy -
You'll have that sometimes! We've got it - someone behind us in a CYV lets their two dogs out now and then as you'd expect they would. One of the pooches just goes on and on until they get back in the house. We never hear any attempt by the owner to quiet the guy down. Fortunately, the dogs aren't out all that often or for too long at a stretch. Overall, not bothersome to us.
Everyone: Please don't misinterpret the post - we love dogs! Just trying to respond to the o.p.'s questions.

Two doors down from our rental CYV a dog often barked incessantly, sometimes late at night or early in the morning. We could hear it clearly from our bedroom. We thought it very inconsiderate as the homeowner had to be aware of the barking. In this case "good fences did not make good neighbors". Just one reason why we would never purchase a CYV.

Just an FYI.... It doesn't have to be a CYV with a dog barking issue. Lots of folks let their pets roam the birdcage and they bark at everything that goes by.... Dog barking, once in a while isn't an issue, but one that barks constantly ....AAARRRGGGGG!!!! That would be time to invite the neighbor over for a glass of wine and [hopefully] they'd leave their dog out and it would bark the whole time they are there....
Fumar... Any suggestions ???? ;)

We ran into the barking dog problem in a patio villa. The villa across the street from us had a dog, and the owner would leave the windows open when she left. The dog would bark all day long. And when that dog barked, all the other dogs in the neighborhood would start barking. Drove me nuts - we sold out and moved to another neighborhood. We've been lucky here, no problems with noisy animals. I've heard that there are many dog owners in the courtyard villas, so suspect there could be a problem with barking dogs.

Thank you for your responses. I guess I would just go and speak to the neighbor myself. Love the idea of a CYV, but was thinking of the echo associated with the barking.
Also, if we purchased a CYV on a golf course, would the dogs bark at everyone playing the course?
I guess I'm just "thinking too much about this"!!!

Consecutive Disruption Law
In Mount Dora, Florida, the law says dogs may not bark for more than five minutes at a time. City officials may consider it excessive If a dog barks longer than five minutes, and neighbors are entitled to call police. Mount Dora law also says that a dog may not bark for more than three 5-minute periods in a 24-hour span, according to a 2007 ordinance. These laws are called consecutive disruption laws because they address problems related to dogs barking consecutively for relatively long periods of time.

"The Dog Silencer Pro trains dogs to stop nuisance barking (boredom and attention-getting barking) but is designed to have no effect on instinctual or protective barking."

I had a problem with a barking dog in the home behind mine. I simply put my speakers in the window turned up the volume and played a recording of a dog barking. It only took a couple times and the problem was solved.

Although not in The Village YET, I solved our dog barking problem with a little $10 "BarkOFF" that I got at WalMart. It hurts their ears and they stop barking. Now I just have to put it where he sees it and not even turn it on and he won't bark. Don't know what the range is but works all over the house.

Well I have to admit I am afraid of dogs..but just four kinds big ones and little ones live ones and dead ones. so the $10 Barkoff at Walmart sounds like a good investment for me. Do yout think it would work on snakes? I am afraid of snakes but only four kinds............

I have two dogs and they like to go out. They are not barkers unless provoked by other dogs barking or a gecko making a getaway. On those occasions when they do bark I am outside in a flash to put an end to it because I once lived next to a barking dog whose owners left it outside 24/7 and I know what it is like.

I live in a wonderful neighborhood in the Village of Duval. We have a "Barker" in our back yard...problem is...it's not a dog!! Sitting in my neighbor's lanai one evening, we heard it the first time. We all swore it was coming from my lanai. Went to my house and it sounded like it was from my neighbor's lanai! Evidently it is some type of either frog or lizard that is living in-between our yards! Never saw it...but we sure hear it! Sounds exactly like a high pitched
yippy little dog's bark! We have a standing joke when we hear it...Please keep your dog quiet!

The Villages Deed Compliance officer will speak to the owner of the barking dog followign a complaint. Second complaint and the animal control pays a visit. No one needs to listen to a barking dog and the fault lies with the owner, pure and simple. Have mercy!

(but, the neighbor on the other side doesn't hear anything at all). Some people just love to complain about anything---as my dog is NEVER barking early in the morning or in the evening...just maybe in the afternoon when I go out....

I think Redtail is correct. We lived in a CYV for three years and I never heard barking dogs at all. Never. We backed on a golf course and our dogs never barked at golfers.
Now we have a house on a golf course and our dogs totally ignore the golfers. Unless the golfer leaves the course and comes close to our house. Then the dog barks to alert me, and that is her job.

Okay ditsyfitzy, I have several ideas you can try. Your dog is either bored, or scared when you are away.
Boredom: try using a "Kong" which is a hard rubber chewy thingy you can get at Petco or PetSmart. Put inside something you dog loves but can't eat too fast, like chicken babyfood or peanut butter, or even a hard treat like a biscuit can be wedged inside. The dog will work and work on the Kong and it will relieve boredom. This Kong toy is especially adored by lickers like Yorkies.
Or, you can hide kibble in different places around the house and the dog will be on a search-and-find mission while you are gone. Long after the kibble has been eaten it leaves a scent mark and your dog will revisit those locations again and again searching. (Be sure to put doggie in a bathroom with the door closed while you are hiding the kibble so he/she can't see you hide the stuff).
Fear or Restlessness: There is a new invention called Thundershirt or Anxiety Wrap and it simply is a stretchy material made into a sort of sweater that closes with velcro. The compression on the nervous system calms the dog. It works on my yappy littly poodle very well. http://www.thundershirt.com/
Or, you can get another companion for your dog -- yes, go to the shelter and find another dog. I did this for my little Yorkie when he was young. Worked like a charm.

Thanks!
I actually HAVE one of those thunder-shirts.....can't tell if it works or not--as I am not HOME when she has it on!
Unfortunately, my Yorkie, Hillary Rodham--isn't at all interested in food--(can you believe it?) so the treat thing and the KONG doesn't work with her....
She is a rescue--and had four owners before me ...and all of this before she was one year old---I have had her for two years now--and we have made great strides. I WISH I had trained her to go in a crate when I left the house---but, I didn't.....and it would be cruel to try that now.
And, yes--I'd love to rescue another---just kind of waiting for the right time....and the right rescue to come along. She is very much the ALPHA DOG--(as you can imagine by her name )...and so, I need one that is more subdued....
Thanks!

Josephine,
This is your second post about dogs in which you are negative. Are you related to Fumar?
All kidding aside, I think most people that have pets are responsible. Just as I think most people with their grand kids visiting keep them quiet as well. There will always be those folks who are insensitive to others - whether it is grandma who thinks it's ok for her granddaughter to play on others' lawns, or dog owners who let them bark incessantly or grandpa who allows the little guy to drive the golf cart or the pet owners who allow their pets to pee/poop on others property.
TV is a high density community. You will hear more and see more than if you are surrounded by 10 acres. We need to be flexible.

Dear Kate was kidding you a little.
Fumar is a nice person.
This is a nice place.
The rules allow the dogs to be at the squares.
I enjoy them and have NOT ever had any difficulty with them.
We all have a right to our views and our feelings.
People taking their dogs to the squares aren't breaking any rules.

My wife will tell you I HATE barking dogs, and we now have 4! My sister-in-law introduced us to a little gizmo called "Pet Agree". It is a training aid from a pet supplier in Dothan, AL called Jeffers. She uses it on her Chihuahua, who really barks, almost when anyone moves! So we got us one and use it occasionally on our "herd". The instructions says it works up to 20', but I used it over the fence on a neighbor's dog, which was outside the 20-feet, and I'm thinking it worked.
It was only $23. Below is the link to their website. There is a birdhouse model on page 1, along with several other models, with a greater range some of you might consider. The "Pet Agree" we bought is on page two. We will certainly bring ours when hopefully we move to TV in 18 months. Might even take it to the town squares!
Good luck. I think some people just don't hear their dogs barking; BUT, I sure do.:(

Josephine - I was just kidding about Fumar - and he really is a nice many, just not a dog lover.
You say you love dogs - but you keep talking about how dog owners are making this not a welcome place for people... Sorry, but I just don't see it.
You have the right to your opinion that the squares are not a place for dogs - but the rules disagree and say that just ain't so. We have made many friends here - some who are allergic to cats, so when they visit the kitty goes in the bedroom.
Pet owners need to think of others - and non-pet owners need to realize that while the pets may not be "people" (although to some they are), that pet owners are also people with the right to bring their pets to places where they are lawfully allowed to do so.

A friend of mine had a dog that just couldn't quit barking. It didn't matter what product was used or what kind of discomfort it caused, poor Maggie May had to bark. The need was greater than any amount of discomfort or punishment. My friend ultimately re-homed her. She is now in a home with kids and two acres of land and can bark to her little heart's content.
I used to have an Afghan hound that was a barker. I never knew it. After putting up with it for about a year, my neighbor finally told me she barked and barked and barked from the second I drove around the corner until I came back home. I'm just sorry my neighbor waited so long to tell me. The only time she barked when I was home was when someone came to the door, so I was clueless. For me, it was an easy solve -- let her stay in the house rather than in the dog run and she was quiet and happy.
It is not always irresponsible dog owners. Sometimes it is the dog. Sometimes it is easily solved once the owner knows about the problem.
As was said, dogs bark. It is part of their social life and it is part of their function to protect, so some barking is reasonable. Incessant barking is another thing and, hopefully, owners are aware of the problem and try to do something about it.
BTW, Lynn, you might trying keeping your Yorkie in an area where there no windows or at least where the windows are closed and away from the complaining neighbor. That might help. Also, it really isn't too late to crate train your baby and it really is a good thing to do. Dogs like their "caves" and will happily hide in one when frightened by things like lightning. (I know of one dog who runs right to the bathtub and stays in it until a storm has passed.)

Hi Josephine,
Kate is my friend and quite a nice person. Fumar has a great sense of humor and if someone told me I was like him, I'd be flattered.
TV is a friendly town for people and dogs and other critters. Many of us consider our pets as parts of our family.
The times I've seen dogs on the square, they have always been well behaved and appear to be enjoying the time spent with their family. The have attracted pats and admiration and brought smiles to scores of faces.
I understand and appreciate your right to disagree and advocate for a change in the rules. Those of us who see it differently are not mean. We just appreciate the dog-friendly rules and find these rules consistent with a people-friendly lifestyle.

I agree John. Probably the dog has separation anxiety and needs to be in a home with people around. Or possibly with other pets.
I do know two people who have dogs that have had their bark removed. Because the dogs barked incessantly and they couldn't bear to give them up. I'm not in favour of bark removal, but the humane societies are awfully crowded with unwanted dogs.

Yes, Bare, I too am practicing restraint. Aren't we both so disciplined? :D
K9, you are much better at restraint than I am. You always have pleasant and educational comments. I think I'm going to have to give up reading dog threads or else tie one hand behind my back.

The one who is really exercising remarkable restraint is Fumar. His wife must have tied both his hands behind his back! :censored:
