Has anyone had any experience with using a TIVO dvr system for their television. When I lived in N.Y. I used the dvr to receive about 18 channels. The cost for cable is getting higher with every bill.

I have used TIVO, in the past. Unless TIVO has changed in recent years, it is simply a DVR that records content from your cable or satellite. In other words, you would not be able to eliminate your cable service. Today, you get the same functionality from the DVR's from cable and satellite providers.
If you're not interested in watching television programs in realtime, you could simply use the internet to watch your favorite programs.
By the way...TIVO charges a monthly fee and locks you into an annual contract.
