My wife recently received a solicitation letter for the captioned breast-cancer fund drive. After my wife had written a donation check, but luckily before it was mailed, I decided to look into what was going on.

This so-called "Villages Area" fund drive is put on by an Washington D.C. outfit that I never had heard of: The Walker Cancer Research Institute. According to Charity Navigator, that institute spends over 51% of its revenues on fund raising. See http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=5417

Not a bad deal for the administrators and fund-raisers of the "Walker Cancer Research Institute". Not such a good deal for breast-cancer research. In any event, there is apparently no real connection to The Villages at all.

Needless to say, our check never made it to the mailbox.

Nice catch. I've bookmarked the Charity Navigator Site as well. Thanks.

By the way, have you noticed that there are no more "thermometers" with how much has been donated to the Moffitt Center in The Daily Sun?

AND other charity events are covered quite nicely and more of them are mentioned in the paper as of late...so do you think Moffitt yelled at the unseen builders of our community?

We will never know what really happened.

Thanks for the helpful link. It's always a good idea to research an unfamiliar charity before giving. Even if you support the cause, you might get more bang for the buck, in terms of actual and/or most effective support for the cause, by picking a different charity.

I am extremely critical of many of the actions taken by the Morse family, but I have no reason to think that they are involved in THIS fund-raising drive.

Graciegirl: Hopefully somebody yelled at them. The developer's self-serving Moffitt fund-raising actions were generating a lot of ill-will toward Moffitt, as well as toward the developer. But you're right; we probably will never know the whole story.

Maybe The Villages will not be getting a Moffitt Cancer Center.

Didn't think you were accusing them -- I was being facetious
