View Full Version : IRS office needed in The Villages?

My mother had some tax issues and I found it surprising that the IRS does not have an office within The Villages! She is unable to drive to Ocala, which is the closest IRS office in the area. Does anyone think it would be prudent to have an office within The Villages? It would help not only the residents but businesses also. Just a thought...I am sure I'm not the only one that has been faced with this issue.

p.s.: when I spoke with a representative at the Ocala office, he said the community would have to petition The Villages and have them place a request for an office to be opened.

I think the IRS is fine where they are, I don't want them too close, when they are not busy they might be thinking of ways to get closer.:22yikes::22yikes:

I agree we need a irs office in the villages. A few years ago i got audited by the irs and after a few months of going back and forth thru the mail i finally gave up and made the long trip to ocala hoping i could find their offfice. To my suprise the man i talked to was extremely nice and helpfull. He got down to the problem and made a phone call to their texas office and my problem was solved. Got my refund check in just a few days after that. It would be nice to have an office close by.

I would prefer that the goverment reduced spending so if they relocate an exisiting office to TV due to customer need in both locations that would be ok.

I do not consider 27 miles a long trip. Duplicating IRS services that close would be a waste of money.

25 miles is far when you are unable to drive yourself or have to depend on someone else to drive you. :( And at gas just below $4 a gallon......

Maybe they would make a housecall. There has to be a better solution to this one time event than opening a new IRS office in TV.

I understand that 25 miles seems like a long distance, especially if you don't have a car.

Having said that, I would venture a guess that 25 miles would seem close for the IRS office to a lot of people throughout the US. (For example, if you lived in Fort Stockton Texas you would need to travel 89 miles to Midland for the closest office.)

25 miles is not to far. How many time really do you need IRS?. Gas at $4:00 a gallon? OH Well! Have a friend drive you, thats what friends are for.Come on 'toughen up".

I can sympathize with some of the folks who are less mobile wanting an office close by...and as TV grows, that may make sense. But I agree with the posters that this would be adding to government spending. May be they could send an agent down for a day to see if there is enough demand?

IRS and needed in the same sentence.

I am thinking about that........:read::DI'm with you Gracie! With and anticipated increase of IRS agents by 16,000, do we taxpayers really need to be soaked for even more tax dollars going to the IRS? I don't think so!

Additionally, just how ofter does one need to respond to an audit? Eileen and I have been married for 44 years and in all that time we have been called in for an audit only one time. That's right... ONE time! At the distance quoted between Ocala and TV, that would be about an annual average of 57% of a single mile and at the cost of gas that would be an annual average of up to $2.06 per gallon. These figures are no exageration, but they may be a bit of hyperbole. But then again... hyperbole "seems" to becoming an acceptable form of communication in recent years.

With todays tax laws, the IRS and their offices are a necessary thing, but I do have to say..."Anyplace without an IRS Office is a good place!"

:agree: I had a problem with the IRS and got all of my information together and made the drive to Ocala and discussed the problem with IRS. I still had to do the paperwork and send the info to IRS. But it was quick and easy.

I do not think one or two people needing transportation is a reason to move an IRS office to TV.

It could be a contradiction to desire much in terms of local service vs. a desire for limited government.

Indeed, if Congress doesn't agree on a short or long-term funding vehicle, any IRS service will likely be curtailed. Also, I wouldn't look for Social Security to provide a copy of a lost 1099 or a new or replacement Social Security card.

While I have a strong opinion on this - I am really trying to present a balanced picture. If you desire a limited government - you have to accept limited services.

Moreover, if you wish to keep taxes low (including taxes for large corporations and the very, very wealthy) you need to accept reductions in entitlements - including Medicare (the most pressing issue) and eventually Social Security.

The reality is that benefits to seniors need to be funded or curtailed. This is the choice you are presented with. Elections have consequences. Depending on each of our personal circumstance - you may support limited government or not.

What is an inherent contradiction is to ask government to fund your retirement without sufficient revenue (higher taxes) or serious cutbacks in previously sacrosanct programs - farm support, highway funds, defense, foreign aid (most of which goes to a few countries including Egypt and Israel), the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as direct aid to the states plus support for the poorest of the poor (Medicaid).

Going after funds for social wedge issues (NPR and Planned Parenthood) - while you may support the withdrawal of funding for these programs - these changes will have virtually no real impact on the deficit.

Please, understand - I am not suggesting what your choice should be. But, please don't fail to see the forest for one or two trees.

We have hard choices to make. Really hard choices - choices that will change our quality of life. There is no free ride. Someone has to pay.

For the last few decades, wealth in this country has concentrated in a smaller number of people. Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it is the same recipe for disaster that we are seeing played out in the middle east. Heck, if I know.

I just know that the country I grew up in is not the same country that I currently live in. And - the difference is only marginally the result of our porous borders. It is - far more - the product of our choices...and the hens are finally coming to roost. Think about the impact of your choices and be sure to let your voice be heard. No matter what your opinion is.

God bless us all - we will need it.

Cheers!

Harbor,

As a fiscally conservative moderate, it seems I am always pointing this out to my more conservative friends. You did an excellent job of pointing out that fiscal conservatism is at times to be in our own back yard.

That politically I am pretty far to the left. Did I cause anyone to faint?

I just think we need to be honest about how much government we really need and how much we can reasonably afford.

Underfund certain parts of government will cost you dearly in the long run. I'm sure some folks in Japan are wishing that they invested a wee bit more in the agency that provides independent nuclear plant inspections.

On the other hand, if we create a too cumbersome tax system - really wealthy folks/corporations will hire armies of CPAs and lawyers to find the one sentence in the tax code where they can avoid paying much of anything...and if they can't find that sentence they will just pick up and move to another country. I hear Ireland is beautiful this time of year.

This is a time to avoiding shouting (though let your representatives know your opinion), take a sip of California wine, and accept that "You Can't Always Get What You Want" - but, if you try some time, you might find, you'll get what you need!

Thanks to Mick Jagger!

All hail to Comrades Marx (Groucho) and Lennon (John).

Cheers!

Harbor, I was pretty sure you were to the left of me - but didn't want to get into a brawl with my more conservative brethren. And I think a ticket with you and Red would be fair - but not necessarily balanced....

Makes sense to me. Also agree that it's inconsistent with the need to cut federal spending.

is that most are really, smart, caring folks who listen to each other even if they don't always agree.

It's hard to make the correct decision unless you thoughtfully discuss and really listen to other perspectives.

I have learned far more from my conservative friends than I have from folks who share my natural value system.

Indeed, it is my secret desire to play spin the bottle with Michelle Bachmann. Ideally, we will drink from the bottle prior to the game.

Remember, in every good Hollywood movie - any contradiction between protagonists will be resolved on an erotic level.

Cheers!
