5" of Rain

Wondering how much rain everyone has had in their areas? My rain gauge just hit the full mark at 5". I live near Tierra Del Sol.

In Hadley near Colony Plaza we had 1 1/4" yesterday and as of 1:30pm today we had 4 3/4" of rain today.

But it could be worse as the folks back in CT as expecting 3" to 6" of that white stuff overnight.

I know you guys have those big rain gutters in the road, do they handle that amount of rain pretty well. We have a corner lot so we're going to get hit two ways.

We ahd the same amount I use to know what 5 inches of rain translated in feet of snowfall but forgot. I do remeber i was a lot. Miss my snow blower naw:clap2::1rotfl:

If I remember correctly, 1" of rain = approximately 10" of snow. Good thing we got rain!

I remember your formula is correct.

5 inches of rain would have been 5 feet of snow.

WHOA!!! And we've been whimpering about the dusting of snow we got in central OH late yesterday................. Guess we'd best quit complaining! :)

Ok, so we are off track a bit here but curiosity got the best of me and I did a search and found this opinion from a National Weather Service forecaster:

"The water equivalent of snow varies a great deal from place to place and from season to season. The accepted average is 10 inches of snow to one inch of water. In the western mountains...dry powder snow may have a water equivalent of 15 inches of snowfall to one inch of water. Very wet snow can yield one inch of water from 5 inches of snow."


Bottom line is be very glad that we are only getting rain!

Yes, there was a torrent of water running down my street into the storm drains. From there it goes into retention ponds and the ponds not only provide habitat for wildlife but that water is used in many circumstances to irrigate the golf courses. Most importantly, rain water seeps into the ground where it raises the level of the water in the aquifer. To answer your question the homes and grading/landscaping here are designed to handle the large amounts of rain that we can receive from time to time.

The neighbor behind me (only recently converted from a snowflake to a snowbird) left TV yesterday morning.

His yard always floods when we get a real downpour. I'd assess that the Mississippi River was flowing through his yard which resembled Lake Superior!

I'm very happy that my house is a good 3-4 feet higher than his!

In my six years, I cannot think of a time with more rain "at once" than we've had in the past 24 hours! I don't have a rain gauge, but am close to Market Square where something very close to 4" was posted earlier today!
