Any Honest Auto Repair Shops?

Twice within 9 months we've gotten taken by auto service centers. Last summer we took our Trail Blazer to Tire Choice to have two new tires mounted and a wheel alignment taken care of. That was expensive enough. After we picked up the car, we noticed the clock was an-hour-an-half ahead of time. Didn't think much of it at the time since who knows what needs to be done mounting tires and aligning wheels? The next day I noticed the gas gauge read almost on "E" when we just filled up two days earlier. We hadn't driven anywhere to use up nearly a full tank of gas. I thought someone had siphoned gas. I mentioned it to my husband and again couldn't find an explanation for the lack of gas. Within a couple more days, my husband noticed the gauge pointer was straight down, as if broken, and from then on it went all over the gauge. We never knew how much gas we had in the tank. Our lesson learned was that we should've taken the car right back to Tire Choice and asked why the gas gauge broke and the clock was set ahead of time after it was in their shop. It will now cost $450 to get it fixed. Expensive lesson but I doubt they would've claimed responsibility for it.

Problem two: Within the last two weeks, the brake light burned out and the ol' "Service Engine Soon" light came on. We took it to Auto Masters of Leesburg and they found the air injection valve and a serpentine chain needed to be replaced. They also replaced the brake light. We got an estimate for the gas gauge repair bill, too. When we went to pick up the car, my husband got in while still in the parking lot and pressed the button for the driver's side window to roll down. It didn't. He went back into the shop and told them now his window doesn't work. A guy came out, pressed the button a couple of times and said the regulator motor broke. I asked how could that conveniently happen just as we were about to leave? He said "it just so happened while the car was under their watch, it could've just as easily broken while the car was under our watch." It's another $100 repair bill on top of $331 we just paid to them.

Why do I have the feeling that excuse is the same one Tire Choice would've used?

The odds of two working, unrelated-to-the-problem parts breaking while the car is in the repair shop within nine months of each other is so infinitesimal that the universe could not calculate it. I'd have better chances of winning the lottery!

What do you think the odds will be that something else will break while we're getting the fuel gauge repaired?

Anybody know of an honest, trustworthy, reputable auto repair shop?

What recourse does a customer have in these cases?

Unbelievable workmanship and pricing and most of all --- honesty!!

They are near the corner of Route 466 and 441 (on 466). There are cars of all years and makes (looks like a junk yard) and the grounds are unpaved.

They did a power window for me for $150.00 that others quoted $400.00 and a radiator and advised me on an oil leak, etc. On a couple of occasions they even drove me home after leaving the car when they weren't busy.

They have a crew of 6 - 8.

Never take your car to "Ford of Ocala" Belleview Office. They are not trustworthy. Long story. Tried to double-dip warrenty on a ford still covered. Did not do work they said they did. Took Ford dealership in Michigan straighten this mess out.

I've had great experience with Sumter Tire and Auto, 352-748-6549. If you take 466A into Wildwood and turn right on 301 (Main St.) they're a block or two on the right. Someone recommended them to me as doing good work, being honest and reasonably priced. I had an alignment and found it to be true. A few weeks later, as I was in the car to take my niece and her friend to the airport, the "Check engine light" came on. I knew I didn't have time to wait somewhere... I drove right to Sumter Tire and Larry had someone come right away to take my car in, diagnose the problem and put my mind at ease. No charge.

Someone recommended Sumter Tire in Wildwood to me. I took my car there to repair a leak in one tire. Went there on a Saturday without an appointment. Even though they were busy, they took a look at my car right away. Told me that my tire was fine but my leak was caused by rust on my wheel. They sanded down my wheel and resealed my tire. When I asked them what I owed them they told me there was no charge. The tire has been fine ever since.

Accu TEch was recommended to me by a Village resident and I am highly satisfied with their service and work ethics. Tim is the owner and his wife is the receptionist, they all go out of their way to be courteous, explain everything and do only repairs that are needed. I have taken my car in for oil changes, to addresss an engine light problem as well as to seek guidance about tire replacement and each time Tim and his staff listened, explained and freely answered questions. And much of it was at costs way lower than in NJ (and plenty of free advice!)

Took our auto to the new Tire Choice store near Colony. Had a real deal on an oil change and tire rotation. Common sense should tell you that something has to give...under $20 with a coupon. Anyhow, I was told that new tires were needed along with the air filter and air conditioner filters. The cost of replacing the tires would be almost $1000.00. Oh, that did include wheel balancing... My suggestion, go elsewhere unless you stop at your bank first! Ps. I found a machine screw with its washer under the car on the garage floor. Someone forgot to put it back in place!

Honest auto repair shops seems to be a recurring theme here on TOTV. You have to wonder what Tire Choice's management was thinking. Does TV really need three TC shops to sell tires, or do they plan to maximize their auto repair business? We've been using Hutson Automotive Repair, 3201 US 27\441, Fruitland Park. They're right next door to Stavros Pizza. They've been there for almost 30 years. They open at 8, and try to do all oil changes at that time to allow for regular auto repair work during the day. They're busy and they're reasonable and they don't need to find dubious work to stay in business. The owner's name is Craig Hutson and that's who you see when you bring your car in for service.

I wish I could remember the name of the repair shop, but it is located just as you enter Wildwood on 301 going south. It is family owned and they are as honest as the day is long....and are extra, extra women friendly....meaning they explain things to ladies so they feel comfortable with the explanation and what repairs are needed and they keep the costs low. They will try and get all kinds of things done, when your there for an oil change. i.e. front end alignment, power steering flush, change all filters, clean brakes,, the list goes on an on. Tried the new store at Colony, same old song. Something needs to be done with them. I've seen so many elderly get taken advantage of while waiting for my oil changes. It would be interesting to see how many villagers have been told they need a alignment and or AC serviced by them, while they are there for a simple oil change or rotation.

If the oil change is so reasonable, why not just get the oil change and turn a deaf ear to the upselling, knowing they are scamming you? Cheap oil change and close by. Good combination.

I just had a couple of my power windows repaired and had some A/C work done is well. Michael's Auto Repair was fantastic. He fit me in to his schedule because I didn't have a ride home, the repair came out to be significantly less costly than the initial estimate, and everything is working perfectly now. He seems to run a great shop and appears to be very honest, sometimes a rarity in the car repair business. I will definitely use him again and would recommend him to friends and neighbors.

It is very hard to decide who is good and who is not...I have been to Hilton's on 441 just north of TV...they over charged me on work they did, cut a hose too short that popped when I left them (and they charged me for that to fix) lost a cap, the list goes on......and not to forget the man behind the desk was sooo rude! I know not to go there again!

I have to agree with the other posters who recommend Tri-County Automotive. I just returned from there with my '08 Ford Expedition that had a squeal in one of the brakes. I didn't have an appt but Ritchie told me to come on in if I didn't mind waiting. I got there and left the car. Came back an hour later and Richie told me that I needed new brakes on the rear. He also warned me that the lug nuts were on too tight and they might break when removed. I told him to go ahead and try. The mechanic (nice kid) got the lug nuts loose and proceeded with the brake job. Ritchie looked at the rotors and advised that they be replaced due to excessive rust on same. He gave me the info to make an informed choice but used no pressure. I elected to have the rotors replaced also. The entire bill was $300 including labor and he even upgraded me to ceramic brake pads at no charge. I am more than satisfied with the service and ethics of this business and will go there in the future when the need arises. Great job, guys!!!

I went to Tire Choice 466 buffalo center area I asked for an oil change with their credit card $16. I was ready for air filter and they did ask if I wanted it replaced gave OK (did not ask the price big mistake) I was charge $31 for an air filter bought a air filter at walmart for $9 took it to the shop and asked them what was the differance was told none $31 was what was in the computer they gave me a $5 store credit for next time,

Before I moved here I'd take the car to Jiffy Lube and while sitting in the waiting room the girl would come out and sit down next to you with an air filter in her hand. "It's pretty dirty and we have your car on the lift". So if $20 resets the clock on the filter sure go ahead. Living here the stakes are much higher. I was sitting at Goodyear on 441 near Home Depot and when the guy sits down next to you it's gonna be $500. This happened every 30 minutes there. When I told him the cigarette lighter jack wasn't working too he charged me $20 to tell me it wasn't working. After dropping the $500 I came back to get the jack fixed and asked him to deduct the $20. He wouldn't. Took the car to Michael's on 466a and he did the work aggreeded on and re-solders a wire on the lighter jack; no charge. I never went back to Goodyear.

After that experience I started using Tire Choice on 466. Came in to replace the battery. $950 later and a wheel alignment I didn't need. I was out the door. Now the front-end is riding rough. Brought it back they swapped the tires around. This did nothing. So back again. It's the bearing, another $200 over the $950. This fixed the rough ride but the car pulls to the right. So back again, its the camber for another $200. This time I said "can't do it today, please write it up for me". That's the end of Tire Choice for me.

Starting using Accu-Tech on 301 just south of 466. And never hear "oh by the way, you need a ...." I would recommend them aswell.

Have used Walmart on 441 for oil changes, a good place to go, I trust them.

Bottom Line:
If you take the car into Goodyear or Tire Choice remove the Village gate card first. This is the tip-off to them that you have money to throw away.

Be careful of Tire Choice near Colony....every time I've had my oil change done there (twice so far) they have tried to sell me something else. This time it was a set of tires that I was told was needed immediately - price $700! No, I didn't get them! He told me they were the cheapest in the villages and they should be done right now --- a little checking and surprise - I found them cheaper!

Ok, The good and the bad. I'm pretty savvy about auto repair and what does and doesn't make sense while doing some of my own work over the years as a college student and hobbyist. I have had excellent mechanics in the Orlando area that I sometimes check with if I'm unsure. I'm still looking for the right combination of expertise and customer service. When I moved to TV 2 years ago my front brakes were beginning to squeal and for sometime made a knock when slowing to turn. Looking for Accutech after reading TOTV reviews, I was parked and looking at my GPS when Jason Accurso drove up to me and asked me to come to his shop for an estimate. He told me I needed Rotors and Pads replaced and the pads would be the best made. Price was not terribly high considering he wanted to replace my rotors which I knew didn't need replacing. Went to Accu Tech and was very impressed with their knowledge and scheduled an appt for the next morning at 8am. I arrived about 5 till 8 and waited in the parking lot. The roll up door was opened and I got out of my car and out of the garage came 3 barking and growling dogs. One about 60lbs and I was trying to determine if I should jump on the hood of my car and decided not.(I'm a dog owner) While waiting to be bitten by strange dogs a man that didn't look much better than dogs looked at me as I asked him if the dogs were ok? He responded the "dogs" were ok which I took as an inference that I wasn't. When I went into talk to the owner about dropping off my car I could tell he was aware of the fiasco that took place outside, No apologies and no mention. I dropped the car off but as I had time to think about it I was so ****ed that I thought about picking my car up before they had a chance to work on it. I didn't and they did a fine job in repairing the car. I have not been back since and thought often about calling the city or county to report the incident. Now I find myself needing brake work for an old pickup truck we keep in storage for errands. I just can't patronize a business that has little respect for their customers. Next I took my wifes newly acquired solara from her mom that was making a noise that she thought were brakes. I couldn't here anything so I asked NAPA on 441 in Summerfield to look at it. He told me the pads were somewhat worn and that they should be replaced. He had a color coded device to show thickness and mine were yellow. Not being entirely comfortable with making a decison I called my Mechanic in Orlando and he told me that some pads New are the thickness of the yellow device. I asked to put the car back together and what did I owe him. He charged me $25 and told me it would be credited when I brought the car back for a brake job. He even called me 30 mins later to be sure I knew that I would be credited the $25, there won't be a next time to take advantage of the credit. Next had screw in my tire and took it to the Tire Choice in colony fortunately they told me it did not puncture my tire but I did need an alignment and that the belts on my rear tires were separating and will need to be replaced. I let them do the alignment because I was already there and had not had that done in a couple of years. I thanked them for the information on my tires but they would be covered under warranty if there was a problem. While waiting they charged a man $137 to repair his turn signal component. When I had my tires balanced at Discount tire which I do every 5k miles they told me the tires were fine. Thanks but no thanks. I will try Quality Tire in the morning.

As to Tire Choice...never again!!

When the guy kept telling me about their "loyalty card" and how much it could save on future oil changes, I asked him point blank..."what's the catch?"

After looking me straight in the eye and saying, "there's no catch"...I said OK.

I figured it was like any other loyalty card/club, such as for airlines and hotels.

When he handed me the application (I should have known right there), it only took a second to see they were asking for my SS#.

When I asked him why they needed it, he mumbled..."to check your credit."

That's when it dawned on me...that I was filling out a credit card application!

I glared at him and said in a loud enough voice for the patrons in the waiting room to hear.."You just lied to me!! May karma pay you back a hundred fold!". :mad:

Another I would not recommend is Phillips Toyota in Leesburg.
I took my 2005 Toyota Matrix to them as I had a noise I wanted checked out. They said it was a pipe in the muffler. They also did an oil change that I did not request, they adjusted the breaks and a few minor things. Total bill $1989.00. Took 4-5 days to get part.
After getting the car back I did not drive it for a few days. But, when I started to drive the noise was still there. Brought it back to Phillips and they said it was the ball bearing in one tire. Cost $780.00 approx. I told them I would not pay that amount as I already had the car in a week ago for the same problem. Had to get the sales manager involved after repeated phone calls. Tried to get in touch with the owner, he was never there. Called the business office for the owner's email and was told he did not have one??? So, they said they would charge me for the part only... 2 days alter the bill is approx. $340.00, they shared me for there cost, not the cost of the part. Tried again to reach owner, no email address they said and he was out of the office... Email to service and sales manager never answered. I will not go back again.....No customer service, unreliable service center.
I was told they do not test cars once they have been fixed....

So, they said they would charge me for the part only... 2 days alter the bill is approx. $340.00, they shared me for there cost, not the cost of the part. Tried again to reach owner, no email address they said and he was out of the office... Email to service and sales manager never answered. I will not go back again.....No customer service, unreliable service center.

I've used Phillips Toyota in Leesburg for over 7 years with 3 different Toyotas. I have always been happy with their service and think the prices charged were reasonable. Whenever they find something not covered in the service request a service advisor always comes out to check with me to see whether I want the work done or not. They don't do anything not requested initially. I just had to add my 2 cents.

I've also had work done by Phillips Collision Repair Service after hitting 2 deer on the way back from North Carolina. I couldn't have been happier with the work they did.

Twice within 9 months we've gotten taken by auto service centers. Last summer we took our Trail Blazer to Tire Choice to have two new tires mounted and a wheel alignment taken care of. That was expensive enough. After we picked up the car, we noticed the clock was an-hour-an-half ahead of time. Didn't think much of it at the time since who knows what needs to be done mounting tires and aligning wheels? The next day I noticed the gas gauge read almost on "E" when we just filled up two days earlier. We hadn't driven anywhere to use up nearly a full tank of gas. I thought someone had siphoned gas. I mentioned it to my husband and again couldn't find an explanation for the lack of gas. Within a couple more days, my husband noticed the gauge pointer was straight down, as if broken, and from then on it went all over the gauge. We never knew how much gas we had in the tank. Our lesson learned was that we should've taken the car right back to Tire Choice and asked why the gas gauge broke and the clock was set ahead of time after it was in their shop. It will now cost $450 to get it fixed. Expensive lesson but I doubt they would've claimed responsibility for it.

Problem two: Within the last two weeks, the brake light burned out and the ol' "Service Engine Soon" light came on. We took it to Auto Masters of Leesburg and they found the air injection valve and a serpentine chain needed to be replaced. They also replaced the brake light. We got an estimate for the gas gauge repair bill, too. When we went to pick up the car, my husband got in while still in the parking lot and pressed the button for the driver's side window to roll down. It didn't. He went back into the shop and told them now his window doesn't work. A guy came out, pressed the button a couple of times and said the regulator motor broke. I asked how could that conveniently happen just as we were about to leave? He said "it just so happened while the car was under their watch, it could've just as easily broken while the car was under our watch." It's another $100 repair bill on top of $331 we just paid to them.

Why do I have the feeling that excuse is the same one Tire Choice would've used?

The odds of two working, unrelated-to-the-problem parts breaking while the car is in the repair shop within nine months of each other is so infinitesimal that the universe could not calculate it. I'd have better chances of winning the lottery!

What do you think the odds will be that something else will break while we're getting the fuel gauge repaired?

Walmart did an oil change and said we needed a new battery. ok go ahead and put one in.

They put in the wrong battery, hooked it up backwards, fried all of the electicals. They did pay for the $3000.00 in repairs but not our time or inconvenience. Things started going bad again in our poor car. Had to get a new one last week. Go to Walmart for auto? I don't think so.

Sir, if I remember correctly I told you that there was a TSB for that code and there is where I would have to start. I also remember that $3000 would be a worst case scenario. Now correct me if I am wrong but I do believe I gave you a copy of theTSB that I told you about and explained the procedure to you. I also requested some information from you about what was replaced, and you would not even tell me what they did. Am I perfect, no, do I make mistakes, yes, do I stand behind my diagnosis, yes, to the point that I needed time to preform the full diagnostic procedure. FYI I use technical hotlines before I spend that kind of money. I cannot afford to make a $3000 mistake, because if I do I eat it, not my customer.

I am sorry that you will not use my services again, and I am willing to refund the diagnostic charges, but to be fair you never came back and allowed for the full diagnostics to be done.

Understand that I would like to know what the repair was so that I can learn and use that information for future use, as that is how we learn and grow in our business.

We had a good experience with Michaels in Fruitland Park. My mother's car air conditioner did not work and he said it just needed freon which he added. Efficient and economical. The ambiance is not great - be prepared.


After researching Youtube and the web on how to fix my Ford Explorer power window, I decided that some of the repair options we're beyond what I wanted to tackle. So, took the advice of many on this forum and went to Michael's Auto in Fruitland. (352-365-2955)

Michael told me that if it needed a switch, the cost would be $70 and if the regulator was the culprit, it would be no more that $170. So, I decided to let him take care of it and very glad I did. I brought the car in and went to the waiting area. Five minutes passed and he asked me to accompany him to my car. He showed me that all he had to do was dislodge the regulator and spray some WD-40 on it. Needless to say, I was very happy but even happier when he told me that there was no charge and asked me to remember his shop the next time I need my vehicle repaired. He did suggest that we try to put our windows down every week or so - that this tends to happen to windows that stay up all of the time.

It really is nice to know that there are mechanics out there that aren't out to get as much out of you as they can. Give him a try next time you need a mechanic.

It is very hard to decide who is good and who is not...I have been to Hilton's on 441 just north of TV...they over charged me on work they did, cut a hose too short that popped when I left them (and they charged me for that to fix) lost a cap, the list goes on......and not to forget the man behind the desk was sooo rude! I know not to go there again!

I stopped in there about 2 years ago because my A/C was not putting out max cold air. They took the car in the back and after a few minutes the "mechanic" appeared from the back with a serious look on his face to inform me that my whole A/C system was "shot" and would require replacement. The service writer wrote up an estimate for around $2200... BUT, he suggested I try just recharging the system for around $79 first to see if that worked, which I did.

Here I am a couple of years later and the A/C is still working great! Guess the "mechanic" needed a refresher course on A/C diagnostics. If you're not mechanically savvy I would watch out here.

We have only been here three weeks and have had a flat tire (large nail) and a heat shield that became loose. The flat tire was fixed by the Tire Center in Colony, no charge although the did try to tell us we had no rear brakes (we took the car for a complete inspection prior to moving).

The second issue we took to Sumter Tire and Auto in Wildwood. They fixed the heat shield, no charge. This place has had recommendations on TOTV and that is why we tried them.

Had my car towed to Tri County Automotive. They were terrific and it was just a matter of putting in a higher grade oil. I was expecting big bucks to fix it. That's exactly what it would have been at the dealer's.

Very good to deal with and would recommend them anytime. They will get whatever work I have to have done from now on.

I've had great experience with Sumter Tire and Auto, 352-748-6549. If you take 466A into Wildwood and turn right on 301 (Main St.) they're a block or two on the right. Someone recommended them to me as doing good work, being honest and reasonably priced. I had an alignment and found it to be true. A few weeks later, as I was in the car to take my niece and her friend to the airport, the "Check engine light" came on. I knew I didn't have time to wait somewhere... I drove right to Sumter Tire and Larry had someone come right away to take my car in, diagnose the problem and put my mind at ease. No charge.

You may have missed several comments about the Goodyear shop. I recall posting one about our flat tire repair experience. Goodyear, just like Tire Choice is notorious for finding additional work that your vehicle may not really need. I agree there is a fine line behind a mechanic being proactive and upselling. We used them that one time. Replacing air filters and cabin filters was pushing it for us. Of course they come out with some dirty filter but who knows if it came from your car. We usually beg off the "upsell" with "it's a lease and we're giving it back soon." That usually ends the "upsell" discussion. There's no shortage of honest auto mechanics in the area but you'll have to decide this for yourself. In our opinion a legitimate mechanic is usually so busy that they don't want or need questionable work. We've had very good experience with Hutson Automotive Repair on 441 in Fruitland Park. For flat tire repairs, we've been using Tire Roundup on 441 in Lady Lake.

I am the general manager of the AAMCO Transmissions Center across from Walmart on hwy 27-441. I feel your pain. I have seen these types of situations before. There are many different possibilities for this particular situation. While I do not see any reason for having to disconnect the battery to change tires and do an alignment it is not outside the realm of possibilities. Technology is constantly changing and new alignment machines are constantly being created so it is always possible but doubtful that they may had to of disconnected your battery which is why your clock was showing the incorrect time. The gas gauge is generally the fuel level sensor or a bad ground and hardly ever the gauge itself. It’s possible that wiring could have gotten pulled on or something damaged while it was in the air but these sensors do go over time. The best way to handle these types of situations is to immediately go back to the repair center like you said.
All that being said, we have found that the best way to keep these problems from happening is to perform a FREE overall inspection of the vehicle on every vehicle that comes in. This helps in several ways. It helps find problems before they happen or potentially get worse, it helps us in order to have a list of the issues found at that time in case the customer wants to come back later to have the repairs done, it helps the customer to know what all is wrong with their car at that time to protect them from your particular situation and most of all since we sell transmissions it helps the customer to know what overall condition their vehicle is in before making a major purchase. The last type of situation that you want to get into is one where you just spent $1500 rebuilding your transmission only to find a couple weeks later that you had a blown head gasket and now have to spend an additional $1500 on a vehicle that was not worth it to begin with.

I love Tri-County. To replace the clutch in my Miata, you have to remove the engine, so you're talking around $3K. Well, I had my car towed to them expecting to hear new clutch needed. Turns out it was the slave plate ($270 fix). They could have gone for the clutch repair -- I would have totally accepted that that was what was needed; they didn't. Have recommended them to many and no one has ever come back and complained.

I was at Michael's Auto repair yesterday, as I wanted an oil leak fixed, so I wouldn't have to clean my driveway from the stains, going forward.

Michael told me it's leaking everywhere, and it's not worth fixing, as it is a small amount of oil. He also said, he could replace a lot of parts but it might still leak the same way as it is now!!!! He did just as I asked, as I didn't want a $1500 repair, to fix something that is minor.

I also asked him to check fluid levels, as I will be traveling next week to Ft. Lauderdale to be with my family, for Xmas. He said there were two belts that were almost ready to go, as they were almost split. I had them replaced, too!
I rather have something fixed rather than be stuck on the road. I believe in preventive maintainence.

I also got a lesson, on how to use a kindle, by his wife , (Stephanie),while waiting, so I bought one last night on Amazon. Stephanie also informed me of a place to buy globes for my chandiler. I went to Besco, and wound-up buying a new chandiler as Butch the salesman, said that globes would not fit properly, in an old chandiler. For a $130, it was worth it to replace the dated one. The chandiler reminded me of the the one I had in CT, so it had to go.

I aksed what I could keep my drive way clean of oil spots in the future and they recommended a product called "awesome", (yellow in color), that is sold by Dollar Tree ansd Dollar General. I purchased a product from another car store, that was $16, to do the same job. I will return the product for a refund. Stephanie also recommended "Tide".
