don't take the few extra minutes to help the future of this planet is a mystery!I live in a relatively new neighborhood so maybe it's not like this all over the villages but I don't see many people putting out a seperate bag for their recycleable trash.I have a neice who just turned 18 & she would be extremely hurt if I didn't . So please folks seperate your trash for future generations!!:BigApplause: :mademyday:

One of my neighbors, a snow bird for 5 years, saw me putting out the bag with the newspapers. He asked if I was recycling, I said yes, his reply........well I didn't know we had recycling! So, maybe folks in the new villages just don't know.

We live in the Historic side and we actually have bins for our recycling. Looks like everyone on our street does it.:MOJE_whot:

In our area of CA we have a small brown cart on rollers for garbage, a large blue cart (maybe three times the size of the brown one) for recycle items and an even larger green cart (maybe 1 1/2 times larger than the blue one) for yard clippings etc.

We (just two of us) usually fill the recycle and garbage carts each week.

Living in the Liberty Park area, I was not aware of the recycle efforts and how it worked or what day. Finally was able to find out. Bins like we have here in RI would encourage me to be more on top of this instead of a separate bag.

We have a large trash can in our garage that the recycling bag fits in. It works really well for us---fill it up with newspapers, cans, plastic, etc.., ---put it out on recycling day and away it goes! Really like it better than the bin that we had in Virginia---has a lid on it--so we can keep it covered. Not real sure about the plastic bag going with the recycling but that is the "rules."

I wish we had the plastic bins, like we did in Michigan.
Much easier than a clear plastic bag we have to use here.

We got one of those trash/recycling converters for one of our cabinets beside the kitchen sink. Keep the newspapers and large flat things (flattened cereal boxes, etc) in the pantry and add those to the plastic bag on recycling night. We have twice the recycling stuff as trash.

Yes, I wish it was a reusable bin instead of a clear plastic bag, but better than nothing. Before we added the cabinet, we had an extra trash can in the pantry for the recycled stuff. The cabinet works much better and wasn't that expensive or hard to install.

You can't use a paper bag, must use a clear plastic one. Paper would be picked up as trash, and not recycled.

OK.... Please help me out here.. The Village in which I live is in Unincorporated Sumter County...and ...Sumter County does NOT do the recycling thing. Anyone know how we can do recycling in this portion of Villages? Maybe the trash collector company that does our village, does the recycling thing anyway????? I was NOT aware that we even had Recycling here....I was told they had recycling in The Villages which are located within the City of Lady Lake, those in Unincorporated Lake County, those in Unincorporated Marion County and the newer Villages which are located within the City of Wildwood.. but not those in Unincorporated Sumter County... However, it is NOT unusual for me to not listen properly.------or at least that is what the lovely lady in the house tells me. ( I do hope that I got that part correct)......Would luv to recycle.

Thank You......I do now believe that I too WILL be able to recycle at curbside. I must have mis-interpreted ( once again ) what I THOUGHT was said. On the subject on the Plastic Bins, in lieu of the clear plastic bags.......I THINK it was said that the plastic bins could be considered a hazard in WINDY conditions ...( ending up in streets, etc.) But that is ONLY what I THINK I heard.......

That's exactly how we do it.We rinse anything that needs rinsing which helps keep any smell out of our garage.

I have a problem with providing an additional PLASTIC bag just to recycle.I see no problem with the separate bag for recycling assuming that the bags aren't winding up in land fills and are also being recycled. I've wondered many times though, why doesn't government get serious about having real results in recycling by developing recycling centers instead of relying on people to pre-sort recyclable items. Doing so would go a long way in improving the recycling results and keep a lot more out of landfills than the pre-sort method does.

If you're referring to recycling centers to which we would have to haul our own garbage in our own car, FORGET it. Often our recycle and trash bags are so heavy I have to drag them to the end of the driveway....am too stiff and sore to carry and lift.....no way would I try to lift them and get them into my car trunk where garbage leaks would goo and stink it up and would have to wash the trunk out in 95 deg. weather.

TV is clean and beautiful because the garbage service takes everything and hauls it away FOR us.

And then there's the subject of wasting gallons of water WASHING the recyclables at home before disposing of them....water conservation matters too.

Didn't say and wasn't implying our hauling to the centers, but was meaning that the pickup service would continue and they would haul the the centers.

I have a bin just for newspapers/magazines that lets me tie them up in a neat bundle with plain twine. Much better than plastic bags.

The clear bag allows the trash collectors to readily identify the recycled materials from the regular trash. Two different trucks pick up the materials. There is no problem putting out boxes or other recyclable items that won't fit in a bag. I prefer the bags rather than having all kinds of bins laying in the yard or driveway for days on end as was the case where we lived before moving to TV.

I have a garbage can in the garage for cans bottles etc with the clear plastic bag. I also stop at the liquor store once a week and pick up an empty cardboard box for the papers which I keep in the garage. Every other Wednesday I put out a grass, branch dead floweres recycle bag which is in the garage. Garbage man is a lot more reliable and certainly neater then the guy we had on Long Island. Best service I've ever had.

This is exactly the method used, when we lived close to Chicago. We had one very large rolling bin that we put everything in and the garbage company had everything sorted at a center.

However, even though I have a 2 car garage and a cart garage, I really have no room for recycle bins. So, I guess I like the bagging method here in TV. Leaves more room for my toys... :D

My point is that we're using more plastic to recycle. The jury is still out as to whether on not recycling is better for the environment. People tend to wash items out with either hot or cold water, a separate gas guzzling truck picks them up and then it takes a factory to actually recycle them. We're better off trying not to buy items packaged in plastic.

I have heard this subject discussed not only here but in casual conversation. I find there are several reasons. Some just don't want to make the extra effort. Some don't want to do it because it is "not the way we did it back home". Some just have an attitude. And some don't know about it. In our area of 10+ years we seem to have plenty of participants.

In our previous lives we had the blue bin. My brother has to take his to a recycling center. I like the clear plastic bag system we use here.

According to the Sumter County, FL, government website, Sumter County does not provide curbside recycling. I'm confused by some who say they have a special day for recycling in Sumter County. Is it something exclusively for TV?

I agree 100 percent with GeorgeT.

I do recycle but question its benefits except for toxic materials which i believe need special handling.

When TV began recycling my main objection was that they were billing me extra and I was doing the work for them. In MN we recycled but the comapnies collecting gave you a discount on your bill...nice incentive. Also had special containers, etc. With the economy down recyclers wer not even staying even but it may be better now. I gladly carry my oil, old batteries, etc to the recyling area on rolling acres road.

I have placed newspapers in cardboard boxes and/or paper bags. neither of these were in clear plastic bags and both were removed by the recycling truck.Guess the one on my street is a renegade!

Where I lived in Michigan, we actually paid a private company to do curbside pickup of recylables. That only lasted a short time, as there were not enough people on the route to make it worthwhile. So we took our "stuff" to a drop off site. When we moved here, we wished TV had something, but we still took our stuff to the Marion County center off of 42 in Weirsdale, and dropped our newspapers at a church bin. We still crush our aluminum cans and bring them to the Lion's bins at the postal station. I love having the curbside pickup, and the cost is practically nothing. We always have twice as much recylables than garbage. For me, it's an obligation to future generations to recycle as much as possible.

How Wasteful the Older Generation Was ...

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she
should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for
the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, “We didn’t
have the green thing back in my day.”

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation
did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right, that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer
bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to
be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles
over and over. So they really were recycled.

But they didn’t have the green thing back in that customer's day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an
escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the
grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time
they had to go two blocks.

But she was right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the
throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an
energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind
and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down
clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in
her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every
room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a hankerchief, not a
screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended
and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do
everything for you.

When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a
wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble
wrap.

Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut
the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They
exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run
on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a
cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They
refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and
they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the
whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes
to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a
24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not
an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.

And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from
satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old
folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?
