View Full Version : Snakes in the House

No, this is not a review of a new movie -- I wish it was!

As of yesterday we found a second snake in our home in Rio Grande -- the first was a month or so ago. They were two different kinds and fortunately neither was poisonous -- but that does not make the situation acceptable.

I checked all the back threads related to snakes and most seem to deal with snakes in the yard or garage.

If anyone has any ideas they would be appreciated: exterminators successful with snakes, repellents that work, snake-proofing the house, and, I guess, first aid for snake induced heart attacks!

No, I don't want to move back to Nebraska, but that seems better than living with snakes.

Help!

I wish I had an answer for you, but only wanted to add that we found a frog in our #2 bedroom last fall. He or she had died and was not hopping around. We have a huge retention pond across the street on the golf course, which only identifies probable source. His entrance is till a mystery. I could easilly understand a GEICO (sorry), but a frog?

Put screens over the plumbing vents on your roof. This will stop snakes and other creepy-crawlies from entering your house through the sinks, showers and toilets.

Well, usually only little brown anoles visit, but once in a while you see cute, wiggly little snakes and big ferocious palmetto bugs. No worries! Just screen off those roof vents.

EVERYONE wants to live in TV, even friendly garden snakes.

This is why we are so fortunate to have the lovely Waterfront Inn right here in TV. I see a snake in the house and I'll be checking in for the next few days.

They couldn't possibly get in there.

Could they?

When I was a young patrolman my worst fear was getting a call involving a snake in some one's house. This was before exterminators, wild life officers, the answer to a snake or gator was to call the police!

My standard answer was (a straight faced) if you want me to go in there and get it, I am going to shoot it and those little guys are hard to hit. Is your home owners insurance up to date? That normally took are of my problem. But the home owner was still looking for a solution to the snake problem. :jester:

GRACIEGIRL --

Kidding??? Is that directed at me? If it is, I wish it were so. I re-read my post, and I am not sure what would give one that impression.

But to clarify what I thought was obvious: Yes, I was kidding about the snake-induced heart attack. Yes, I was kidding about moving back to Nebraska. But, NO, I was not kidding about the snakes!

A plea for some help on my part -- simple as that. And it would still be appreciated.

You must have a big enough house to accommodate a few snakes. How much space can they possibly take up?

cometgirl
05-16-2011, 08:31 AM
Any space a snake or mouse takes up in MY house is too much!!!!! :22yikes:

Given the reserve area behind the houses across the street from your house, I can see where snakes would be in the vacinity. Now, you just gotta figure out why they like your house.... Maybe because of the nice person that lives there!

Do you have trees touching or over hanging your roof? Don't see how the snakes could or want to get on the the roof unless there are trees near it.

I consulted my buddy Steve on our way back from the shuttle launch this morning. He is our "TV expert" from living here for many years, and he lives in front of one of the preserves with snakes etc around (and which, nevertheless, he has only rarely confronted anywhere around his house, he says). He says snakes in the house almost for sure came in the same way people do--through the door, when we left it open for a bit while unloading a car, while we were in the garage etc. Soooo, Steve says keep garage and house doors closed and we probably won't have uninvited visitors! He has certainly convinced me to be more careful.

This makes sense to me; when we lived in Kentucky our lot backed up to woods, and we always had to be careful to keep our garage and house doors closed to keep wasps, even raccoons and other critters out - the same goes here! I think it's just that since we live in a more developed area here, not being in a directly wooded area, it is easier to overlook the natural surroundings within which we live.

From another Snake Hater - I was sitting in a lawn chair behind my home a month or so ago, and watched a large (to me) black snake slither up to my house and go up between the vinyl siding and wood construction of the house. This truly got my attention as I hate snakes (not scared of them, just hate them).

I went in the house and did two things - first, I got my 9mm out of storage and ready for use, and second, I got my luggage out and started packing. There isn't room in my home for a snake or any reptile for that matter. New York winters aren't really that bad.

About 2 weeks later, sitting behind my home again, I watched as another black, four foot long slithering slimy creature made its way to my home and as it started to go up to the siding, another black snake stuck its head out from behind the siding and hissed at the "would be intruder". The "intruder" turned and left, probably looking for another home as inviting as mine.

So apparently, I have a problem in that a snake or two, seem to like my home as much as I do. It doesn't help that the wall that the snakes seem to like, are on the bedroom side of the house. Nightmares? Not me...

I had a problem with squirrels in my attic a few years ago. We found a place that specialized in geting rid of critters in your house. Here is a link to the place we used in NC. http://triangle.crittercontrol.com/

Hoepfully, you can find someone offering a similar service there. They will inspect your home and determine where they are getting in and seal it off in addition to getting rid of the snakes. Don't let them hang out and start multiplying, you wil be looking for a new house !

I don't know how big your snakes are but. I recently read an artical about someone bringing there plants inside for the winter and didn't check for critters beforehand. After the nice warmth of the house it seems the snakes left the plants to go exploring. Just an option.

Just another war story, I am a retired plumbing contractor, and we got a call of a toilet leaking on the floor, we checked it 3 times and couldn`t find anything wrong, come to find out the water on the floor was caused by rats using the toilet as a way to get into the house, we installed a check valve on the drain and that solved the problem.

There was a similar thread when we were considering buying three years ago.

Not about snakes in the house but snakes in the grass, bushes, trees and I will never, ever forget that one funny guy said something about snakes in the toilet. I had the worst time lowering myself to the throne for weeks!

BUT....Momesu....there are thousands of us that post and read here and snakes in the house would be mentioned, believe me, if it happened frequently.

This is the first time I have read about snakes in the house. Those gekkos do sneak in from time to time, people say that. In three years we have found one gekko and we leave our sliders open in nice weather.

I understand your feelings. It is not a big problem, believe me.

Agreeing with swimdawg.....a big.... http://www.cosgan.de/images/more/bigs/c017.gif for the reassurance. I can live without being on a lot by any of the ponds and am tired of tall trees in my yard so don;t need anything snakes can drop from. (My grandfather once had a snake drop out of a tree and go down the back of his shirt while on vacation in FL....took me 5 years to get up the courage to sit under a tree in my parents back yard there.) I can handle geckos and the like. I can even do small spiders but snakes in my house would be a deal killer for me. I would be terrified to step foot into it ever again.....I know I am a big sissy. I willingly admit it!

OMG!!!! Must have been really scary!!! We've lived in TV's for about 5 years and during that time, and we've seen snakes around the house during summer months. We don't live close to a pond which might explain why we've not seen many more, but we do have a very busy neighbor who spends at least 7-8 hours a day gardening. He replaces mulch and moves plants around seemingly every couple of weeks. We believe this might be part of what stirs the snakes up and cause them to move on until things are settled again.

Having said that, I have found that spreading moth balls around the perimeter of the house and landscaping area has produced great results. I can report that I haven't seen a snake in the yard over the past few years, but have seen them next door. It seems that the smell of moth balls is a real deterrent. Anyway, it works for me - cuz - I hate em!!!!

I might also suggest that you keep your garage door either closed or fitted with a screen if you keep it open to allow a nice tropical breeze to flow through the house. I can't believe how many homes I see with the garage and kitchen doors open most of the day. Don't forget where you are - the TROPICS. This is fertile grounds for critters of all sort.

Go by some moth balls and give them a try!!!!!

If you see a snake in your home and you need someone to remove it, PM me and I will remove it and relocate it free of charge. I would much rather remove it and take it to an area outside of TV than have someone kill it.

When we lived in San Antonio, I walked into our front room and there was a snake on the floor (he wasn't real big)....didn't know what to do and didn't want him to get away so I ran and grabbed my Dyson vacuum, pulled out the hose and sucked him right into the canister. Removed the canister and sat it on the porch, luckily for me the exterminator came that day and removed him from the canister. This was also my answer when I spied a couple of scorpions walking across the floor.

Always enjoys reading threads from city folks. I killed a 3" copperhead in Santiago about 15 months ago. If you don't want or can't shoot the things, get an small ax, and chop them up. Mothballs will keep them away; however, must replace the mothballs often. In addition, mothballs, if eaten, will kill your dog or cat.

I don't like snakes at all. Neighbors in our old neighborhood in Hadley have seen snakes. They say it was because a couple of neighbors had bird feeders that attracted small rodents and they are snake food. I also remember that someone found a snake in their pool.

Those snakes seen were outside. No snakes in new village, yet. The disturbance of all of the natural habitat takes a while for even geckos and birds to return.

The only time I personlly have heard from anyone about snakes inside the house was the post made by the OP of this thread which was started in May of last year.

Has anyone else had this problem? Did putting screens on the vents stop your snake sitings, Ron???

I don't like snakes at all. NOPE. I hate 'em.

I was talking with a woman here in Woodstock last weekend who worked for a plumber. Somehow the topic of snakes in the commode came up :eek:
in the conversation. One customer had a problem with this and the snakes were getting in through a sewer clean-out pipe in the yard which was missing it's cap. I don't know if you have these in TV but I would think so. It's probably a good idea to locate these and know where they are and one could check the security of the cap at the same time.

While snakes in the house are never acceptable, keep in mind that nonvenemous snakes in the yard are your friend. They control populations of other critters that you really don't want around either. (Think roof rats in palm trees.) Learn to recognize the difference between good and bad and you'll be more comfortable. Just my $.02 for the day.

Lowes, Home depot, Ace hardware all have a product called "Snake Away". It is a granulated product that smells very much like moth balls but does have other ingredients.

Very easy to use just sprinkle where you do not want snakes to cross. We had a lake home in the woods...lottsa snakes at different times of the year. I created a complete circle around the house....no snakes.

The stuff does work. Petting balled up steel wool in openings helps keep them (and other critters) out as well.

The comment about the steel wool brought back a memory. Years ago, my dad came home from work to find my step mom under the kitchen sink, carefully stuffing steel wool around the pipes. Apparently, she had seen a mouse and was imitating what she had seen her father do when mice came in from the crawl space. After watching her for a while, my dad then asked "Now how are you going to keep them from coming up the basement steps?"

Oh No...long black snake in my lanai today! Hubby tried to direct it out the door but it slithered quickly up the vinyl siding. Now we have to keep the patio door into the house closed until we can corner the critter and remove him peacefully (or lethally if required). Kinda creeps me out but I believe he's probably harmless even though I think he's kind of gross! We've been here 2 years and this is the first snake I've seen and hopefully he'll be the last to want to reside on our patio. For those inquiring minds, we do not live by a pond but we are a within walking distance from a preserve area.

I put those sticker boards down in garage, to catch critters (like snakes) and it works pretty good. I have caught two snakes that way (one big). Plenty of spiders too. They are immobilized, as they get stuck all over. I also use the moth balls around house, especially in the bushes. They usually last a couple of weeks. Don't need many, just a few in each bush etc, and close to garage. The suggestion about not having any growth close to house is very important. Close meaning a few feet away, so they can't jump or stretch. I also have seen the small snakes run up inside the siding!! (Goes to show you they can climb) This time of year, they look for birds eggs in trees. To me a snake is a snake, regardless if it's poisonous or not!! Oh yes, theres also "Snake Away" a powder or granuals. Happy Snake hunting!!!!:coolsmiley::ho::clap2:

 I am with you as I too don't like snakes. They have to be getting in from somewhere. I would check your house good to see if you can find how they are getting in. At least they are not poisonous.

Just a personal note here that comes from being a volunteer at a nature center:
There is not such a thing as a poisonous snake. A poison has to be ingested by eating it to be harmful. Some snakes (rattlesnakes, etc) are venomous. A venom is injected (such as by fangs).

Snakes do a lot more good than harm. The glue boards are a cruel thing. While you do not want geckoes or snakes in your garage, do not use glue boards - sprinkle moth flakes around the edges of the garage or the Snake Away granules.

I have found that the most frequent entry by snakes into the home is through an open garage door or a lanai or cage door that has inadequate seal along the bottom. Once inside the snake wants to get out as badly as you want it to leave if there is nothing for it to feed on.

Please don't kill them. Take up offers in this thread to remove them. They do more good than we imagine for insect and pest control. This is Florida and the sankes were here long before the Villages.

Thanks for the good post, Hancle. I really hate to see people try to kill every snake they see.

My volunteer job at the nature center had me holding them and giving demonstrations to schoolkids on reptiles. Only accident I had with the snakes was one time I was not paying close attention (talking when I should have been looking) when I was feeding a dead (but warm) mouse to a king snake. The king snake (about 5 feet long but harmless) swallowed the mouse and before I realized it, the snake had half my thumb in it's mouth and was swallowing as fast as possible. Now, a snake's teeth curve backwards so prey (and thumbs) cannot pull free. I had to have help actually opening the snake's mouth so I could get my thumb out without tearing it open or hurting the snake. The kids thought it was all part of the demonstration!

I use moth balls around the house as a first line of defense.Keep bushes away from the home and keep trimmed.Use sticky sticks in the garage, caught a few that way. They are usually dead if left on for a few days. I checked daily.Believe.only good snake is a dead snake.Sorry thats how we feel.

(to keep snakes away) sprinkle moth flakes around the edges of the garage or the Snake Away granules.

Are they harmful if ingested by dogs?

We had our oriental rugs cleaned and stored. In Feb we transported them down. We then opened them up as they were wrapped in plastic and moth flaked..

OMG we darn near fumigated the neighbors.

I don't think we will have any snakes or vistirs for awhile. That smell keeps everything away.:oops:

I am terrified of most bugs but there is no word to describe how I feel about snakes. I can hardly type the word without getting the chills.

I have for so long assumed I'd be buying a patio villa when I retire, but now that I'm reading about "them" crawling into the vinyl siding, would buying a courtyard villa with stucco insure that I'd never see a snake in or on my house.

I know I'd always keep all doors closed and be careful coming in and out, not just to avoid "them", but anything not welcome. Should I rethink my decision?

If the possibility of a snake would cause you so much panic, yes, re-think your decision and think of a climate where you will not have snakes as a possibility - like Alaska.

Don't re-think your decision, just take the same precautions you would take anywhere else. I see from your post you are from the northeast. The snakes are no worse here than they are in many areas in the northeast (we have a summer place in rural NY and I've seen more snakes there than I have here in TV). Don't leave your garage or other doors open, check your screens and you have nothing to worry about.

Buggyone,
Did I neglect to mention that I don't care for grizzlies either. Thanks for that warm and fuzzy welcoming feel.

You stated the thought of snakes made you panic. There is a slight possibility you will see a snake here in Florida. You asked if you should re-think. I merely answered. I don't know of any state that doesn't have snakes besides Alaska.

No matter what kind of a house you buy here, there will always a a slight possibility of having a snake in the garage or lanai. You will have a gecko from time to time for sure.

I have a designer home. I have had a couple of small snakes in the garage but no panic.

Just realize the snake is more terrified of you than you of it. Chances are almost certain you will not see a venomous snake - but also is a possibility.

:agree:

Do you have trees touching or over hanging your roof? Don't see how the snakes could or want to get on the the roof unless there are trees near it.

Some people are terrified of snakes. It is not funny to them. To have a snake in your home would be very disconcerting.

In the past, I have used stickboards in and around the garage. Put them by the door and on the side by the walls....that is where they will go if they get in.

Use the Snake Away...it works and is not as strong as moth balls.

Understand it is mating season for the Black Runners. They are active at the moment.

And most of all have a back up plan if you encounter a snake...will you use a broom...or a shovel to kill it (make sure it is a flat edge)...or call the police...they will come and assist. Also, if you do corner a snake use your big garbage can to scoot it into it then put the lid on...or just put it on it and wait for help.

Most people here in TV never encounter a snake....but those that do always have a story about them.

And most of all keep your lanai door closed, garage door closed and your front door closed.

Didn't say it wasn't funny. Just watched a female teacher get fired for saying something similar!

Yes I'm sensititive! NOT!

Take a class in cooking. A snake can be very tasty with a nice sauce. Be careful to cook on a lower heat so you do not burn the meal. Let it simmer for a while.
