If everything works out with our home buyers, we should be moving to The Villages in a few months. :2excited:

We need a new car. I'd appreciate any advice on whether we should purchase a car here in Delaware or wait until we move to TV.

If you bring in a new car to Florida and register it w/n 6 months of purchase you have to pay fl sales tax regardless of if you paid in Delaware

Do you have a good working relationship with a particular dealership where you now live? You could get a better deal with someone you know than you might with a dealersip you've never dealt with before. Read this from the Florida Dept of Revenue also, might give you some info you don't know about.... http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/forms/2009/gt800030.pdf

I would buy it here so that you have a local dealer, whom you bought from, to go back to if there are issues or for warranty services etc. Even though a local dealer might be required to provide service on a car that you bought elsewhere, I think you will get a more 'white glove' experience if you bought from them, ie, you will have a salesperson/sales manager (who wants your future business and referrals) whom you can call on to intervene for you if needed, etc. Plus, I got the definite impression when we bought our car recently that the buying power of The Villages, from a referrals consideration, was a factor; that when the salesperson learned we were from The Villages they became particularly interested in winning us over, by giving us a great deal.

Just wondering on this subject. If you bring the old car down, do you have to title it in FL before you can trade it in here? It costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 to do that.

Buying a new vehicle is straight-forward for ANY ex-military..and their IMMEDIATE family. They can be a member of USAA. ( used to be only available to active or ex-Officers ---and their name had to appear on the title ).......Auto manufacturers have a USAA member price. Which I have found to be pretty dang reasonable. No haggle --no smoke and mirrors. Bought new in FL for the first time 16 mo ago and eliminated having to pay for all the B.S. dealer installed add-on crap ( still got them--just did not have to pay for them) and got a good size discount from MSRP as well. IMHO ----if you can be a USAA member---you may want to consider the USAA fixed pricing, no matter where you buy. But since you only pay a 3.75 percent "fee" in DE ......well........

I spent over 30 years in the automobile business and you can trade in a car with any title from another state in any other state. One thought is that you have a certain amount of time to legally title that car in Fl once you move to FL as a full time resident. I would be more worried about the insurance being good on that car once I have moved here over that legal length of time than I would worry about being stopped by the police. A ticket would be cheap compared to your insurance carrier telling you that your insurance is no good once you have a claim.
