Would help to know the size of the house, occupied or empty.

Newer home or older home, also - (newer builds are more energy efficient).

And Vivian is serious. It is cold in her house. We live across the street from VJ and our bills run in the $125 area.

Russ...I'm with you... I like it 68 at night as well....it seems like I'm just getting comfortable when it's time to get up.... The air conditioner repairman man told us that the units are really not made to go below 70...we are in a brand new lily and were told to call and ask about a dedicated line/thermostat for the master bedroom itself, thus not cooling the entire house just to sleep comfortably.... We will be doing that next month when we become full-time residents of buttonwood... Will keep you posted if interested...

We live in NJ and we keep the temperature set at approx. 74 degrees and it not too cold, sometimes too warm. In TV we keep it at 78 degrees and we are quite comfortable. Don't know why but the AC seems to produce more comfort in the new Florida home. So as others have said it depends on square footage and the temperature you set your thermostat, 68 to 78 degrees is a big range. I know utility bills are much lower in TV then NJ by a large amount.

If you don't mind some cost, it might be worth considering a zoning system for your HVAC unit and ductwork. Here's a document from one manufacturer that explains things pretty well: http://www.zonefirst.com/products/DesignManual.pdf Given that all the ductwork is in the attic in TV homes, it would be pretty simple to access the ducts to install the dampers for each zone and to fish wires down the walls for the additional thermostats. We've got such a system in our current home in OH (and retrofitted one into our previous home) and have really liked it.

Sometimes, thermostats come out of the box needing the indicated temperature calibrated/corrected. Check it with a thermometer or other temperature sensing device of known accuracy. On the newer type electronic thermostats, the adjustment is usually a simple thing to do, just a matter of pushing a few buttons - the owner's manual should have a section covering how to do it.

I was thinking about that as well. I only need the master bedroom cool when sleeping. Here in MA I keep it at 65 at night when it's hot.
Keep me informed. (I have a Begonia).

My ac is always on 73 or 74. In the winter my heat is 68. I think all my neighbors keep theirs on 78.
