Hello all- We are new transplants here from the midwest and in need of locating a reputable medical INTERNIST here at TV who accepts Tricare Prime . With all this discussion about healthcare down here, I am a bit concerned as I am an RN coming from a major medical center and can't believe what I hear and read about docs in the area. I suppose we can go to Ocala or Orlando if needed, but what a pity not to have THE BEST MDs right here at TV.

If anyone can offer me some help-- it's most appreciated!

PS... this is our first post so I hope I did it correctly.

Welcome, first of all ! The Tri-Care web site will assist you in finding doctors which take Tri-Care Prime. We have Tri-care for Life, and also Medicare, so with that combination we have no problem and have yet to pay first penny. Our medical care is also very good, and we are, for the most part, very pleased. Each of us has had one hospitalization and have more ills and problems than a person ought to but our medical needs have been met since our arrival in The Villages. Are they the same sort of staff we had grown accustom to in the midwest, no, but that took many years to develop and become satisfied with. Be willing to adjust and be patient, thats the key. I have a couple of specialists that exceed what I have experienced any where.

Won't say that Tricare Prime isn't available here but very few Dr here will accept it. They will accept Tricare Standard/Extra however. We investigated two years ago when we moved here and when we asked why were told that the Tricare Prime was too slow paying but that Standard/Extra was not. Still the case? Don't know that but you might check into it. When you get to age 65 of course you will have to change to Medicare with Tricare for Life (if desired). Prime and Standard/Extra aren't available (at least to most) after age 65. As kb8tpw said though, go to the Tricare web site and you can do a pretty easy search to see what the situation is now.

Try Lake Sumter Family Medicine's nurse practitoner - her name is Gina, NP. I have Tricare Prime, too.......it is difficult, difficult, to find a specialist. I've been sent to an OLD orthopedic doctor in Orlando that I swore would never operate on me. I was sent to Ocala to a rheumatologist. I'm a nurse. What I've seen and heard does not make me happy. In Maryland, we had the best of healthcare, down here, I think the Medicaid people get better. Be very, very careful if Tricare Prime is your only insurance. You're not going to be happy. Publix will fill your prescriptions.

We rely exclusively on Tricare Prime. Family Physicians of Lake Sumter 352-751-5514 is our primary doctor. One of the very few in the Villages. Not sure there is another. As you know with Tricare Prime they refer you out to other doctors as needed. They have a referral desk that handles all referrals by the doctor. They contact the specialty doctor your doctors refers you to and the specialty doctor then calls you. Sometimes we have to drive to Ocala or Gainsville for a referral. There are not many Specialists in the Villages who take Tricare Prime. However, all the doctors we have been referred to have been excellent. Just private message me if you wish about any other questions. We were also referred to a rheumatologist in Ocala and was very happy with the doctor. Also have been referred to a Neurosurgeon in Ocala who is fantastic. We also had a one week stay in the Villages Hospital and Tricare Prime took care of everything. As Forsyth above said we use Gina, NP. We really like her, both my wife and I. Good luck. CVS also fills any prescriptions as well as express scripts.

Thank you all for your insightful information and suggestions. Fortunately, we are relatively healthy but need to secure a doc in the event we need medical care.

Thanks again fellow Villagers!

tca: Welcome to TV. We moved from Ohio two years ago and started getting discouraged about the health insurance differences. Thought we would want to go Tricare Prime but gave up on that route. We then went with Tricare Standard/Extra and have been very happy. Doctor takes it no problem and we've been referred to several specialists also with no problems. Yes, there are differences based on personal health issues but I suggest you really explore and think about changing to the Standard/Extra until Medicare age.

We will need these questions answered soon. Does this have anything to do with our community organizer giving Chicago type healthcare waivers to many fortune 100 companies?

Thank you for the list. BTW Tricare dropped Walgreens. Th ere was a petition to sign at Walgreens asking that Tricare reconsider. Walgreens was charging Tricare too much. Is there a pharmacy where we can get the shingles vaccine shot?

Our neighbors are on the same plan and they have to go to Gainsville, Fl for treatment. Go on line and see if there are other alternatives.

I'm a Herk kinda guy, retired from 139 AW STJ-MO. EW Shop Chief. I also spent a deployment at the pole with the Ski-Birds in 99.

Double check the info provided above. Gainesville is the location of the closest VA hospital and nothing to do with Tri-Care. Tri-Care, in one of it's 3 forms is honored by most physicians in the area. But the form is the key point and it is a benefit of retired military. In addition to the hospital in Gainesville they have a wonderful clinic facility right here in The Villages (Mulberry Grove). If you are over 65 and have Medicare and Tri-Care for Life you should not have to pay a plug nickel. If you are not 65 all things change. I would rely on the Veterans Service Office in the Sumter Co Office at 466A and Powell - they have the unadulterated truth and they have the answers suited to your particular scenario, which is what you need. It is a complicated arena. If you need VA assistance they are representatives from the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans (maybe more) in the clinic. Times and days vary and they are highly trained by their respective organizations. It is a complicated process, but regardless of your scenario hang in there with it and you will be well taken care of.

Struggled with the same Tricare issue. Latest I was told (last week) by Tricare customer service is that only some areas of Florida will no longer accept Tricare Prime after Oct 1st. Offices who now accept Tricare Prime that are in this 'deleted' area will automatically convert patients to Tricare Standard/Extra. We were directed to a group in Leesburg that currently accepts Tricare Prime & will continue to do so as they are not in the 'deleted' area. It is Family Physicians of Leesburg at 801 E. Dixie Ave., Ste 101, Leesburg, 34748. Phone 352-326-4031. Dr Kilpatrick sees all Tricare patients. We have our first appointment with him next week.
Good luck!
