Has anyone had an april aire filter installed in their home and can you tell me if it is worth the cost and does it last a full year as they describe?

Mary, what is an April air filter? I have a one year filter in my furnace, Munns changes it yearly when the unit is serviced. Is this what you're talking about? It does last a year for us.

I just had one installed which is 20x20x5". It supposedly should be changed once a year. Air Force 1 installed it along with an air filtration unit. For the price I paid I got ripped off for these 2 items. You can get the filters at Home Depot. I read somewhere that you have to be careful with the size of the unit in that the size I need I can purchase but it may not be the exact dimensions that I have even though it might say it's that size. Can't remember where I read that.

I'm an HVAC contractor in Mass and I installed Aprilaire Air Cleaners for years. Unfortunately their replacement filter prices got too expensive and I've since changed to General-aire Filters. Another similar brand name is Trion Air Bear. Both of these are easier to replace the filters and less expensive than the Aprilaire. Once a year replacement is good for many houses depending how you use your system, whether you have shedding animals, and whether you have multiple zones. Check the filter after 6 months. My house in TV came with an Aprilaire and I only change it once per year. Another plus with the filters I've mentioned is that alot of brands share the same generic 20X25X5 filter which is not the case with Aprilaire which probably results in their higher cost.

Here is a page that explains the "MERV" rating. http://www.furnacefiltercare.com/merv-ratings.php The air filter that came with my Designer's air unit 2 years ago was installed by Munn's and is rated MERV 8. Munn's sells replacements for about $50.00. They are also available from Shortys http://shortyshvac.com/ for less. Mine lasted a year and the Munn's guy said it did not look that bad but it was a year old so it was changed. We do not have allergies and the filter seems to be fine. If we had allergies I would go to a MERV 10, also available from the above site. What is the MERV rating of the April Aire?

Florida is dusty and anything that you can do to help is worthwhile. Our AprilAir came with our Preowned Designer and we changed the filter after nearly two years. It should probably been done earlier. Munn's gets $50 for replacement filters. I got mine at www.WestsideWholesale.com for $28.75 plus shipping and handling. Since the shipping and handing is the same for one or multiple filters, I ordered three. I had them in just a few days. I stuck with the AprilAir filters rather than getting no-name replacements.
