I would like to introduce you to Trader Joe's We have loved this store and all the quality items they carry. An upscale grocery store that searches the world for items to carry under their brand. Very good pricing, and a lot of items that other stores don't carry! A lot of the cheese, meat, fish etc are of good quality and cheaper than most other grocery stores.

Check out the link below
http://www.traderjoes.com/index.asp

Please join me in trying to get Trader Joe's to come into the Lady Lake area! We have the people to attract a store of this quality and we deserve to have a great option for grocery shopping!

What makes you think we don't already know about Trader Joe's? The population here has come from every state and other countries.

Various threads here have already discussed this.....contacting TJ to tell them to open one.

THANK YOU Robert Craig Poe for bringing up Trader Joe's. That brings back some great memories of visiting family in San Diego. Went to TJ to get supplies for the "mass feedings" of too many relatives. Got LOST<beyond lost> Stopped to ask directions from a lovely couple in TJ parking lot on University Ave? ( Yes it was the SECOND time I was in a TJ lot...How the He77 was I supposed to know there were 3 TJ within 4 miles of each other) They were nice enough to LEAD me back to my( 8 mile away) destination. AND.... yes I like TJ too.

There have been several letter writing and emailing efforts to get Trader Joe's here. Sadly, I don't think it's going to happen. The closest one is in Atlanta. They have a distribution problem, i.e. can't go too far from their distribution centers.

Which former Porters location?

(across for 441 Wally World or across from Del Webb Spruce Creek)

(there was a Christmas Tree and ornament shop in Spanish Springs near Too Jays but it went bye bye)

But at a higher price. I visited Fresh Market with a friend when I was down in January and it was very nice. However, I would equate it more with Whole Foods than Trader Joes.

That's interesting the Trader Joe in my town has very good prices and much better quality than any of the local grocery chains. I will really miss my TJ's when I move.

I love the Christmas Tree Shop(s) in Massachusetts/New England, they have a variety of items and very reasonably priced, would love to see one pop up around The Villages area.

RE: Trader Joe's, well personally I can take it or leave it, however they do have Two-Buck Chuck - AKA "Charles Shaw" for $2.00 a bottle. :D

agree!

I've said this many times on TOTV but I'll bring it up again. TJ's is not cheap. Here in Norton I have access to all major chains (Stop & Shop; Shaws; Hannafords (known as Sweetbay in FL); TJ's and others). By far, and I mean by far, the cheapest is Market Basket. I have done actual grocery list receipt matching and Market Basket is over 34% cheaper than the next lowest.

It's tough to compare TJ's since they aren't really a full service grocery store anyway. They have some items you can't get at the other places but not enough for me to consider them for weekly grocery buying. And the items that do match up 1 for 1 average 45% higher than Market Basket.

I really think the Trader Joe debate is similar to the pizza and ice cream debates we have from time to time. It is very parochial. (i.e. what you are used to is always better in your mind). Personally I base it most on cost.

Haven't ever been to Trader Joes. I have been to Fresh Market and it is nice, but I see a lot of things already put together to take home and heat up, and some nice deli things, and some lovely fruits and vegetables, but it doesn't have a lot of stuff I depend on, like Spot Shot for my carpet and other things that I use for depression like

TJ's is good for some things, not so much for others. I have been shopping them since I first moved to SoCal in 1990. They finally extended into NM a few years back, first Santa Fe and then Albuquerque. I also like Bristol Farms and Gelson's in SoCal. Kellers, out of Southern Colorado has been in NM many years and sells wonderful organic beef, eggs, lamb, chicken and more.

My favorite market of all is called Central Market in Ft. Worth, TX. I think they originated in San Antonio and also are in another city in Texas.

I look forward to spending all of October in TV. Checking out where I can find high quality groceries is at the top on my to-do list. Not only an army travels on its stomach.

They are actually owned by the same parent company. Usually where there is one you will find the other there shortly. Since Aldi's hasn't been near TV to long Trader Joe's may show up soon.

From Wikipedia: Both operate in the United States; Aldi Nord operates the Trader Joe's niche food stores, while Aldi Süd operates the main Aldi stores in the country.

From the NYT:

The New York Times has an interesting look at Aldi, the German-owned discount chain that's anything but a superstore — it features a small selection of private label products aimed at the consumer who doesn't really care what supposedly "choosy Moms choose."

The article made an interesting point: Aldi is basically Trader Joe's without the marketing. According to the NYT, Trader Joe's is even owned by an Albrecht
family trust — the "Al" in "Aldi."

chuckinca
07-23-2011, 07:47 PM
When we shop at Aldi's, Trader Joe's, Fresh Market and Whole Earth it is mainly for specialty items not available at Safeway, Publix, Winn Dixie or Walmart.
Probably just get about a half dozen items at the specialty stores about every three months while going to the larger stores nearly every day.

Graciegirl- that made me laugh.

I've never lived close enough to a Trader Joe's to shop there regularly, but have been to one in Portland OR and another one in Pismo Beach, CA. It's fun to shop there occasionally, but I don't think I'd shop there on a regular basis- they seem pricey to me. Except for that two-buck-chuck. Can't beat it and my untrained taste-buds can't tell the difference between a 20 dollar bottle of wine and a 2 dollar bottle of wine anyway.

Hi Angie,
Trader Joe's is similar to Whole Foods but each section is whole lot smaller. They carry organics, imports and many of their own brand items. Also, a modest assortment of health food. Most everything is pretty tasty and some things are rather unique. It's kind of a "once in a while" specialty grocery store.

You won't see any of the brands you see in a typical grocery store. It's not a place to buy Tide or toilet paper. But they have the best triple ginger gingersnaps in the universe. And everyone who works there wears hawaiian shirts and a happy face.

Trader Joe's is owned by Aldi and Aldi is expanding throughout FL. So there could be a chance of getting a Trader Joe's here. But the Fresh Market is very similar to Trader Joe's. Have you been to the Aldi Store on 441? It has some of the same items you would find in Trader Joe's.

You and me both. Never tried 2 buck chuck, as there is no Trader Joes near me but I will have to sometime. I love the Whole Foods store about 4 miles from my home in Schaumburg, but I usually shop at Dominicks or The Jewel for my regular grocery shopping. When visiting TV, I liked the Sweetbay store in LSL and the Publix store in Southern Trace Plaza just north of 466.

Christmas Tree Shops sell many items. Food, furniture, garden ornaments and supplies, books, and even a few tools. They have something for everybody. They are probably best known for the different holiday decorations. (including Christmas)

You can buy beach stuff, such as chairs, umbrellas, other items include curtains, bedding, furniture, glassware, food items, decorations, paper products, all occasion cards, gift wrapping/gift bags, lawn ornaments, and many, many other things, it is a great store and they have unbelievable prices, too!!!

Where I live in Central NY, we don't have many upscale food stores (if any), but we do have Wegman's, and I have one less than a mile from my home. Wegman's is one of the things I'll miss most when we move to Florida next year. Alec Baldwin's mother Carol lives in the Syracuse area, and Alec told a story on Letterman of how he tried to convince his Mom to move to the Left Coast to live near him, and her answer was, "What, and leave Wegman's?" That's how good a food store it is. TV needs a Wegman's.

TJ's is totally organic, and probably priced closer to Aldi's than Fresh Market.
In fact, Aldi's is the "mother company" of TJ's. Corporate office indicates the first TJ's to open in Florida will be in Miami area. Was to be in Sarasota, but that was cancelled for some reason. Once the Miami one gets up and running, we certainly need to do letter writing to get them up this way. Will take a lot of coordinate...good luck!

I would love a Kroger in TV, too-- and not just because they have excellent price and selection. When Publix first entered the Atlanta market (admittedly at least 20 years ago), it started a price war. If Kroger came into FL, Publix home turf... Well, let's just say, 'shopping would be a pleasure'. ;)

And wouldn't we all love to see Kroger's "double coupons"??!! Since moving to FL we haven't be able to enjoy any double couponing here. Back in Michigan we LOVED our double coupons AND our Kroger; but, I have to say, Meijers was really the best. :bigbow:

All I can say..........you haven't seen a grocery store until you have seen WEGMAN'S! My WNY friends will verify that one......

It is the best of the best.....

It is one of the FEW things TV is missing (along with an indoor pool. There she goes again...I can hear you sayin').

Go Bills! Go Sabres!

Wegmans, YES!!!!! There is no other store like this one in the entire state of Florida. It is an exceptional experience to shop at Wegmans.

To top it off, they double coupons!

Perhaps I should write to Danny Wegman and tell him to open a store in The Villages!!

Good idea. I would write to Barney Kroger but he is at the great cash register in the sky.

Back in the early 60's, Danny's father Robert gave a little girl who was shopping with her mother a free pumpkin for Halloween. It was at the store on Fairport Road in the East Rochester area. I can still picture it in my mind when it happened.

Later on as a 17 year old I worked after school at the Wegmans at Pittsford Plaza. Of course this was all before they started their "super store" concept.

I don't have shopping memories of Wegmans, I have childhood memories.

Plus, Wegmans has been on Fortune Magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" every year that Fortune has published the list - since 1998. This year they were ranked 3rd.

Are you SURE you were in a Trader Joe's or was it some other store with a similar name?
In all the years I shopped at Trader Joe's, I never saw a premade sandwich, and never saw sushi of any kind.
I have shopped at Trader Joe's in California and in New York for nearly 20 years and everything I bought there was of the finest quality.

yep it was definitely trader joe's, and CBS news has often rung their chimes as well. They definitely have sushi, you can often smell the overused rice vinegar before you see it.

Trader Joe's is very, very popular in New York. I guess everyone is wrong about it except you.

Unfortunatly, Wegman's has only gotten as far South as the DC area. I will tell you that folks in the Rochester area define where they live by which Wegman's they shop at. We shopped at the one on the corner of 441 and 250 or the one in Newark, as an example.
