One crazed madman with a gun and hundreds of unarmed civilians. One has to wonder, if just one other citizen had a gun in Norway, could they have averted the staggering death count?

And I think you will find that if law abiding citizens had guns crime would be lower and we would be safer.

Your kidding, right? Most of those guys were bad guys killed by other bad guys, just like the gangs that still kill each other today.

I'm not anti-gun. I think citizens should be able to own guns. But most of the guns that kill people are illegal, unregistered, either stolen or bought on the street. And most criminals walking around with guns do not carry the guns visible in holsters or outside pockets.

also, no police were on the island.

the killer had more than one gun; maybe it is a mistake that everyone doesn't carry ten guns just in case.

Some of us don't see the need to have a gun. That doesn't mean we are against anyone who wants one to have one. I am not anti-gun.

I see absolutely not one reason to carry a gun in The Villages, unless you are paranoid, obsessive or are having a serotonin low. Now if that changes, (the safe atmosphere of The Villages,) I will change too.

I am grateful to be be able to say what I just did, I like all of the amendments to the Constitution....especially the First one...

That may be true but when a madman has an hour and a half to walk around shooting kids and no one is nearby with a gun to stop him, I understand the need to say.. maybe disarming citizens is a bad idea.

One gun would have been enough to have a chance. Why did you say TEN guns? Do you have to extremely exaggerate your point to have it make any sense? Must be because your point is weak without the exaggeration.

Gracie: I am sorry to say but gun crimes are not just committed at "unsafe" locations. I am sure the families of those kids in Norway thought that the island their kids was on was perfectly safe. Same with McDonalds and other fast food places where mass murders have occurred. how about at the Columbine school? Same with outside a Safeway store in Arizona where Gabby Giffords was shot.. Same with the many murder cases I was involved in as a prosecutor and defense attorney.. several shot in their homes by young punk robbers, while handing out trick or treats, in their cars driving down the street, There is no such thing as a safe place.
I wish you were right that there are safe places. What about the couple who were shot in the Villages by their daughter's friend?
People do not have to be paranoid, obsessive or are having a serotonin low to want to be able to protect themselves. Police rarely are able to protect people... the fast majority of the time they arrive after the crime as been committed.
Many people in TV are armed.. you just do not know about it.. and I really really like you, but you made a mistake and should apologize to them.
I am not trying to hurt your feelings, but I sincerely think your logic is unfair to a lot of people, especially your statement about them being paranoid, obsessive,, or are having a serotonin low..
I do not believe you really meant that.
Did you?

It never ceases to amaze me that the American answer to gun violence is to get more guns - if you have one, I'll get two. Is that really the answer, or is there something wrong with society as a whole that this is what people resort to? America has been world-famous (and not in a good way) for our gun violence and Europe has been relatively unscathed until now. There are quite a few European countries that don't arm their police and it has worked fine up to this point. Having lived overseas for a number of years, I asked Europeans what they thought of Americans and the answer I got repeatedly was pretty sad - we were all fat and owned lots of guns.

31 years of working in the criminal justice system showed me why I need to be able to protect myself, not just with a gun, but also with my mind.

Does that include the couple who were shot by a trick or treater on Halloween? Or the home invasion victims.. or the cashiers who are murdered while at work.. or etc etc..

I agree that there are things you can do to be safer.. but NEVER.. NEVER blame the victim of a violent crime..
What a shame.

Let's see. What some Europeans (how many?) said was "we were all fat and owned lots of guns".

Maybe some of us would like to ask them is, "How long have you lived in or visited the USA?"....."If you've never been there, where do you get your information on all of American society?"......."How many Americans have you spoken with directly and in person (you know, to size them up physically)?"......"What television channels and internet sites informed your stereotype that all Americans are fat, gun-toting hicks?"

Gimme a break.

Bogie Shooter,

People kill people with cars, knifes, clubs, rocks, fists, etc. Don't blame the object, blame the person. Enforce the current gun laws on the books, if you use a weapon in a crime, and don't hurt anyone, life in prison, if you hurt someone, the death penalty, snf no sitting on death row for 30 years doing all the appeals. 30 days and they are gone.

See problem solved.

If only the folks who like toting guns were just a tad more disarming....

They always seem so militant on the subject.

I don't care who carries a gun and who doesn't, but if I know they do, I don't want them to visit me.

And...in the above post. Please note the descriptive term "madman".

Very awful and very sad.

Is it logical to say, "You have a gun, I'll get none." "You have two, I'll still get none." "You get three or more, I'll stick by no gun at all." Ahhh, If only pacifism worked! We would all be safe, but sadly, when the bad guns outnumber the good guns, the good guys lose. '

Actually, the topic if this discussion is, "of one other person had a gun, could the magnitude of this tragedy have been reduced?" Regardless of how the topic is discussed, the answer is "yes."

Reminds me of discussions with my sister. Whenever I provide an irrefutable position, she says, "now you're being ridiculous."

Wouldn't that be a qualified "yes", make that a maybe.

Provided that other person didn't get shot before they could get to and/or use the gun? Maybe was able to fire and missed and then got shot. No guarantee that it would have reduced the tragedy.
