Yesterday we took a guest to Katie Bell's for lunch. We arrived as they were
clearing up the buffet from breakfast. There were about 5 young people who were cleaning and getting the buffet silver servers ready for the next meal. We sat in amazement as they used terribly dirty rags to clean the buffet servers and used the same rags to "wipe the floors" and then continue to wipe down the insides of the buffet silver servers. It included the edges of the servers. It was a terrible exhibition of what was very unsanitary. As we
left I mentioned this to the person at the door and suggested he mention it to the Manager as it was terrible to watch as you were getting ready to eat one of the meals. We are not regular customers of Katie Bell's so don't have a lot of history.:mornincoffee:

Boy Howdy.
Don't go there much but that is so awful to hear. Guess there is a lot of stuff that we probably don't know and don't ever want to know going on in public restaurants.
Love to eat "Chez Home". I know what the clean up staff is doing at all times.

I think it's even worse in supermarkets. Once I was getting some cold cuts and the deli person was just finishing up cleaning the slicer. She was ready to slice my order without even changing her gloves. I mentioned it to her and walked away. I told the manager. I do the same in restaurants when my order isn't right. I will never send anything back to the kitchen.

Was your concern that they were cleaning up the mess "as it was terrible to watch as you were getting ready to eat one of the meals." I dont understand - when should they clean up the mess the buffet eater have made. Or was it the fact that they pre-cleaned the servers with dirty rags before they went to the kitchen for the real cleaning before being stored for the next buffet. Just wondering if you thought that was the finial cleaning ??? or trying to make it easier for the dish washer to do the finial cleaning

In my humble opinion, I think they painted a very clear picture of using dirty rags to wash down items that would hold or touch food and then used the same rags to wash the dirty floors and then back up to where the food would be placed. You don't cross contaminate. I got the picture loud and clear.
They are only trying to alert us.

I agree with you. Once up here (not in The Villages) we were shopping very very early in the a.m.........while browsing the meats.....I spotted a package of black kielbasi in where the bratwurst, etc. was displayed.....in the regular meat aisle along with steaks, chicken, Italian sausage.
Once I saw the lady butcher, I brought it to her attention.....
She replied, "Oh, it must be a specialty item". I told her that I didn't think so as we knew what Polish kielbasi should look like and have never seen it black.
She went back and spoke to the head butcher at Price Chopper and came back with this story........."The meat is shipped packed in some sort of chemicals to keep it from turning from pink to black and this package must have sprung a leak"...........that didn't make me feel any better.
They removed it....but I kept thinking what if some really elderly person with bad eyesight came along and bought it. I don't think they'd care at all.
If you go really early at about 6 a.m.........the floors by the butcher's area are filthy and it can be mind boggling to see expired cheeses and such in their worst appearance........not to mention meat on its way out before the butcher has a chance to remove it..........who knows what they treat it with or what they then do with it.
I guess we will never know what goes on behind closed doors in restaurants or supermarkets.
Buffets in general can be iffy for one's health, if they keep the stuff longer than is necessary and just keep stirring it around.

To be clear. They were cleaning them for the next buffet. They were cleaning them on the floor. They did not go to the kitchen for cleaning. Once they were done cleaning them with dirty rags, (also used to wipe the floor) they reset them up on tables for the next buffet and rolled the tables with these buffet servers back in the corner or another room for usage on the next buffet. It was apparently the "Final Cleaning" as they were set up on tables with clean table cloths with the napkins through the handles and on tablesfor the next buffet and the tables all set as they would be for a buffet.
Of course we could recognize if it was a "first touch" before the kitchen. My point is that the Management should be more observant as to cleaning of these silver buffet servers and good sanitary procedures. :mornincoffee:

If you haven't already told the manager, please call them and do so. Typically management doesn't see it and kids have NO clue. I remember when I was a young teenager dipping the floor mop into a sink full of dishes to wet it...ugh!! (mom didn't see it..looking back now makes me cringe!). If I owned a restaurant I would want to know. It's much easier to correct the cleaning crew than to explain to a court how all of the customers developed food born illnesses.

I emailed the original post to my husband who ran a successful business; his take on the matter below..........
Yes it is the management's fault for NOT PROPERLY TRAINING the staff.
Even if they were properly instructed, the manager should have told that person (On the spot) to go home for the NEXT TWO WEEKS.
Thus making an excellent example for the other workers, NOT to repeat such uncleanly habits.
Then the whole staff should have been pulled aside for a one minute lecture.
If the public could see what was happening, so could the management.
This person should send a letter to the manager, so that this is not repeated in the future.

I have a friend who has been in the supplier side of the grocery business for over 30 years. He says never buy meat that has been marinated, stuffed, or otherwise pre-prepared. He says that is where the expired meat ends up.

Good to know.
I've always wondered about the marinated pork tenderloins and pre stuffed chickens. Some type of tenderizer with TONS of sodium are used on them.
Meat just does not seem to be what it used to be.

I don't know if one should not eat there. I personally would ask to speak to the manager on duty at that moment. This way if you explain what you saw just minutes before, they can immediately tell the staff the problem and it could be corrected right then and there. Also then the staff can not place blame on someone else if it is the next day or even next shift.

Missypie I understand your point however our guest was unconfortable with a possible confrontation and I wanted to honor their concern. I did let them walk ahead as we left and I stopped and spoke to the man who was acting as the greeter and explained to him our concern and observations. He said he would speak with the Manager and I felt that was enough. I don't recall ever
having to talk to a restaurant manager or employee because of a concern with sanitary conditions. :mornincoffee:

I really don't think managers care. Only owners care.
I recently was in a restaurant and when the busser cleared the table next to use, he dumped all of the leftover food, dirty dishes, dirty silverware, dirty napkins, squeeze mustard and ketchup containers and salt an pepper shakers all into the same filthy tub. When I told our waitress, she almost gagged and said I should speak to the manager.
So, I spoke to the manager, and he said, "....oh we do that all the time and then we wash off the mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper containers before we put them back on the table.

Maybe someone should just email this thread...would scare the heck out of me if I were the owner. To not go back there based on something that someone saw once isn't fair. I think I would have told the kids...then the manager...then a letter to the owner. It would be terrible to have a place like that closed down because of an unclean reputation. We ate there on our lifestyle visit and it was ok..nothing fantastic but pleasant..unfortunately, I did make a salad! :(

Without a doubt the manager should have been notified immediately. Not the host, not the buss person, not the guy who delivers your drinks.
There is no need for a confrontation, simply state the facts to the boss, making sure to note his or her name and use it in the conversation. If you're not satisfied with the response don't be bashful. Take it to the next level.
I've never understood the reluctance to escalate an obvious problem to management. Like another poster stated, I never send food back to the kitchen but I never hesitate to voice disapproval when I receive poor service, poor quality food or improper food handling. Nothing emotional, no screaming, no nit picking, just the facts.

Katy belles is filthy. Just look at the outside dining at the sidewalk that the tables set on in the fence inclosed area has not been power washed in years. You can tell what it could look like by looking at the outside eating area next door. The doors going into the building from the same area have grease an dirt all over them along with peeling paint. Look at the drink coasters trying to level the tables up. The catsup bottles are not refrigerated after they are opened as it says on the bottle that they should be. The ash trays are always filthy with wet cigarette butts, so they have sat overnite. Katy Bells is last white elephant that TV owns. The restrooms always have at least one stall that is "out of order". This is a place that has had no renovations since opening. This is another example of the general trend of attitude of letting spanish springs of dying on the vine. Look at all the vacant buildings on the main square.

I don't believe there is a general conspiracy to let Spanish Springs die. Other restaurants and businesses are clean and up to date. The one time I took guests to Katy Belle's the noise from the band was deafening and the food was worse than mediocre and the place was filthy. I will never go back.

The other two restaurants still run by the developer; The Lighthouse and Cane Garden are two of the best run restaurants here. I don't know how Katie Belles is run or whether it is now leased. Running a restaurant appears to be a very time consuming and difficult job. It isn't done well everywhere for sure. I have only been there twice in three years. Katie Belles must have management problems.
I wish someone (who knew how) would forward this thread to Janet Tutt. She would get it going to the right desk, I would guess. OR to the health department.
Or...does anyone know how to get the email of the manager? With the force of TOTV, at least we could make concerns known....and give him/her just a small headache. The lack of good management there is just plain wrong, with people looking for a job!!

My family has eaten at many restaurants in TV. I'm sure that many of them had sanitation issues of which we were not aware. However my first impression of Katie Belle's( from outside ) was not good so we did not go in. After reading these posts , we will not eat at KB until we see some significant improvement and hear from other posters that errors have been corrected. We will also probably suggest to friends when discussing where to eat tht KB should be avoided.
In our other home town ( Hagerstown, Maryland) the local newspaper publishes health department reports on all food service locations each month. After reading them we determine which places we will scratch off our list until we see a subsequent clean report.
Hope KB management and owners are reading this

What I did not include in my original note was the atmosphere while the poor sanitary cleaning of the buffet silver servers was going on. There were about 5 young adults fooling around, snaping each other with the towels, laughing and joking while people were dining, one had cloth napkins on his shoulder
rubbing in his hair, etc. There was no supervision and it was one of those "get me out of here moment". We had considered leaving after we had ordered and probably should have but stayed which was poor judgement.
A comment by our guest was that it appeared a lot of people came in to drink and dance and they were catering more to this group than the people who wanted to have lunch or dinner. Poor management and supervision would be an understatement. :mornincoffee:

You paint quite a picture.....that answers my question as to is it mostly a bar.
We had thought it was a western type "saloon" but for all ages such as a place we ate at in Keystone, South Dakota by Mount Rushmore......it was a nice dining establishment with a western theme.
Since we don't do bars and the baby certainly does not....I appreciate the lowdown.

The issues of cleanness are very easy to solve. Just get a power washer and clean the builtup filth of grease, dirt and gum blotches off of the concrete inside the patio dining area. Have the morning guy clean the stagnet water and cigerette butts that have been there for weeks out. Either purchase new tables or have them repaired, it is very difficult to eat on a table that rocks back and forth. I was walking by yesterday and counted 9 tables that had drink coasters under them, talk about a lame attempt to correct a known problem. There is absolutely no excuse for dirty restrooms, other than apathy which seems to rampant at Katy belles. My plan is take my camera send these pictures to the health department, although I am sure the Morses must have them there back pocket. I would like to see the last time a restaurant owned by the developer was sited with health code violations.

My husband agrees........he would often power wash down the exterior of his store. Ditto for our house after each winter.
It's sad that a place which sounds so popular with the "Villagers" has sunk to the apathy you notice.
But it's a breath of fresh air to hear the honesty , rather than sugar coat everything as la la land. No place is perfect. Many places are pretty and picturesque.......and all places have problems. Guess it all depends on where one is coming from.
We are down to our 50 and 60 degree nights and 70 degree days.....but the previous heat spell was brutal........so again, we are weighing our apples vs. oranges. It doesn't mean we have hangups as an earlier poster claimed we had; it means we have a brain. No one would want to live in Stepford.

My personal recommendations would be either TooJays (SS or MS), Mallory Hill, or Cane Garden. The gourmet club might help also http://home.comcast.net/~thevillagesgourmetclub/page1.html
Many thanks...........

We went to the square was raining, thought we go to Katy bells to try the music. We walked up to the door man, was a kid in his early 20's playing with his cell phone not checking Id's at all, he just said "go on in" rather disappointing to know he should be checking. We "went on in" was not crowed at all. We enjoyed the music, I happen to look up at the speaker over our table, an lo'and behold, dangling from the speaker was a 8 to 10 inch piece of tinsel from Christmas! After being there over an hour an half as we were leaving was the same kid playing with his phone only this time there was one of the waiteresses from inside hanging around. We waited for few mins for the rain to let up. The gal just stayed with no rush to leave both them continuing to play with his cellphone. There are some major management problems here.
