I have about an 18" avocado tree that I grew from the pit. I am thinking it will not overwinter. Does anyone have success with growing an avocado tree in TV?

Hi
Unless you choose to keep your avocado in a patio pot and keep it pruned to a manageable size, you may want to rethink this idea. If it is a Florida variety, it will grow 30 to 60 ft. tall eventually. Floridata (helpful website!) also adds:

"Planting distances depend on soil type and fertility, current technology, and expertise of the homeowner. Avocado trees in the home landscape should be planted 23 to 30 feet or more (7.0 to 9.1 m) away from buildings and other trees. Trees planted too close to other trees or structures may not grow normally or produce much fruit due to shading."

Hope that helps you!

We had an avocado tree in our back yard in Miami that was easily 60 feet tall. Because all the fruit was in the top of the tree, no one benefited from it except the fruit rats that used to wait under the tree for a ripe avocado to fall.

Boy Howdy. You are an Ohio girl! Shades of peach pits my grandmother placed in rich soil under bricks. You are a chip off the old block and a reminder that apples don't fall too far from the tree. Planting by the light of the moon....Ohio farm person, that is you JoJo.

Keep those plants a growin' missy!

P.S. I need to visit with your mom. I miss her.
