Hi!
I am a student who is doing a survey of people who are retired and have a few questions to ask that will help me with my course work. I would greatly appreciate anyones input. I have lots of responses from people who are newly retired and am looking for more input from people who have been retired 10 years or more..but feel free to contribute regardless.
Thanks a bunch!
Are you newly retired or have you been for over 10 years?
What is your life like compared to how it was before?
What challenges do you face?
What are the benefits?
If you could change anything, would you?
Would you still retire at the same point if you could go back and do it again?
What advice do you have for younger generations about retirement?
Thanks for your help!

Hello there and welcome.
There was a person who was doing a study on much the same information who posted a short while ago. Their professor sent an identifying note and a validation. It wasn't UCF but somewhere close by. Are you the same person? If so how many people responded? Is this for your thesis?
Kindest wishes,
Gracie

I would think this student might want to have a return name, email address, some way for his respondents to, well, respond.
As the kids say, just sayin'.

I agree with cybr and Gracie.
Student might get plenty of interesting and valuable answers, but needs to validate his/her qualifications to ask!

Qualifications? If I had those I wouldn't be in school!
I'm just doing a group project where I'm supposed to ask some retirement aged individuals what it's like to be retired...no thesis..no big deal..no hidden agenda...
Just trying to pass my class and I don't know a lot of people retirement age personally so I figured these forums would be a good place to get a diverse group.
If you really want to know who I am, I attend Mount Hood Community College in Gresham Oregon and am a 37 year old student in a Integrated Media Program and this class and it's coursework are just part of my prerequisites to qualify for my degree. I am married, a home owner, have 2 labrador retrivers, drive a Honda Element and my favorite TV show is Game of Thrones.
I dont really want to toss up my personal Email for this and I dont expect anyones personal info either..just their viewpoints if they are willing to give them. Below is the original assignment info, my group chose chapter 11 (retirment) and I was saddled with getting some answers, hence my being here and a few other forums out there. I've already got about 8 responses on other sites but only 2 were from people who have been retired for 10+ years. The class is entirely online by the way.

PSY 101: Group Assignment Topics
Each group should pick one assignment topic, and divide up the assignment among the group members. Topics coincide with certain module topics throughout the term. Groups should turn in a collaborative summary of results on the due date. The summary should be a 3-4 page Word Document, double spaced.
Combating Stress (Ch 4)
Research the main causes and effects of stress among college students. Develop and give a survey to about 10 college students. What are the most reported causes of stress? What are the effects that the stressors encountered have on the lives of college students? What are the most common methods of coping with/relieving stress? Based on the results of your survey, develop a program for relieving stress that would help college students combat the stressors in their lives in healthy ways. Be sure to tie in information from the textbook and lectures.
Conformity in Society (Ch 6)
Research conformity, norms, and the different reasons that people conform. How do you think these influence the day to day activities of college age students (18-25)? What are some ways that society promotes conformity? What are the consequences of not conforming? Observe people in different situations (i.e. on a college campus, at a restaurant, in a shopping mall, at church, out on the weekend, etc.). What are the typical expectations for each situation? What are some examples of conformity that you see? Make a list for each situation. What would be the reaction of other people in the situation if a person did not conform to the expectations/standards of each situation? Do you think conformity in these situations is positive or negative? Explain. Be sure to tie in information from the textbook and lectures.
Subjective Well Being (Ch 1 & 10)
Research the concept of Subjective Well Being. What does current research say about the overall level of subjective well being in our society. What things do people report make them happy? Unhappy? Interview 10 people of varying ages. What makes them happy in their lives? What things are they unhappy about? Overall, do they feel that they are satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are in their lives? Why? Compare the results of your interviews with the earlier research results. What are your findings? Be sure to tie in information from the textbook and lectures.
Retirement (Ch 11)
Research retirement. What is typical of retired people in our society today? Survey several people who have already retired. Try to interview about 3-5 people of varying ages (someone who just retired, someone who retired 10 years ago, etc.). What is their life like compared to how it was before? What challenges do they face? What are the benefits? If they could change anything, would they? Would they still retire at the same point if they could go back and do it again? What advice do they have for younger generations about retirement? Relate the interviews to the information given in the textbook and lectures.
Thanks again.

Are you newly retired or have you been for over 10 years? 10+
What is your life like compared to how it was before? Better
What challenges do you face? Health, aging
What are the benefits? Independence
If you could change anything, would you? Probably could have saved more
Would you still retire at the same point if you could go back and do it again? Yes
What advice do you have for younger generations about retirement? It is never too early to start planning. Pay off credit card balance every month. Borrow only when absolutely necessary.
Thanks for your help!
Hope this helps.

Are you newly retired or have you been for over 10 years? 8.5 yrs. from my last profession - but have my own company now, a p/t business
What is your life like compared to how it was before? Less discretionary income now so we have to stick to a tighter budget. But also far less work-related stress. More free time now. And I'm told I'm a better person to be around now........... :22yikes:
What challenges do you face? What's going to happen in the future with the economy, healthcare/Social Security/Medicare systems, inflation, our country as a whole? And will we be able to maintain a respectable lifestyle/mode of living through our years in the future?
What are the benefits? See response #2
If you could change anything, would you? Nothing of consequence.
Would you still retire at the same point if you could go back and do it again? In retrospect, I'd have probably stayed in my last profession a bit longer. I got out of the game at a (comparatively) early age so it's tougher on the finances for a longer stretch of our lives than it would have been otherwise. But I might have also had a stroke/heart attack/who knows what from the stress...........it seemed like I was heading down that route! :) Adapting to a different financial situation is as simple as modifying your lifestyle (and mindset) to fit it.
What advice do you have for younger generations about retirement? Invest wisely and save, save, save. And then when you think you've saved enough.......save some more. Very few companies will be providing anything even closely resembling a "livable" retirement plan for the younger generations so you'd better plan on going it alone. If you can be lucky enough to have a job you enjoy and work for a company (assuming you wouldn't be self-employed) that is successful, growing, and "shares in the wealth", all the better for your financial future. Also, keep your charge card purchases in check. If you can't pay the bill in full when it shows up in the mail each month, then you're not doing it right.
Bill :)

Are you newly retired or have you been for over 10 years? retiring and moving the month of my 62nd birthday. I think too many people are retiring to young to start. Full pension no penalty plus SS.
What is your life like compared to how it was before? Fabulous fun planning this for the last 10 years.
What challenges do you face? Will I need an afternoon nap?
What are the benefits? No Schedule. 7 Saturdays a week.
If you could change anything, would you? Nothing
Would you still retire at the same point if you could go back and do it again? Absolutely with the plan and the budget that will support us to age 100.
What advice do you have for younger generations about retirement? Have a plan and a duget that considers inflation. The question isn't can you afford to retire now. The question is will you be able to have enough to pay your bills in 40 years with enough discretionary money.

Hi!
Are you newly retired or have you been for over 10 years? I have been retired from my previous profession for 4 years, but work (get in the way) part-time in a business owned by two of my kids.
What is your life like compared to how it was before? I have time to do things that I did not when I was working - golf - yard work - boating - fishing - travel.
What challenges do you face? My wife and my health is pretty good, but there are always issues and they will likely become more challenging with time.
What are the benefits? Having the time to do what you have on YOUR agenda.
If you could change anything, would you? I would have saved more.
Would you still retire at the same point if you could go back and do it again? Probably, though I could have easily worked longer, but I was fed up with the commute.
What advice do you have for younger generations about retirement? Don't waste time worrying about your retirement years .... enjoy every moment. In fact, don't waste time or energy worrying about anything!
Thanks for your help!
