View Full Version : Unhappy with TOTV

Personally I'm surprised and unhappy that threads are being closed and not allowed to develop. I enjoy the give and take of threads and feel that shutting down a thread because someone is sarcastiic or a comment is not all sweetness and light is shortsighted. In all the years I've been on TOTV
I'm now unsure if this message will see the light of day.

I personally think some posts run their course and disintegrate into other than the post topic. I check in on these posts and instead of finding anything associated with the post, I find out that Joe lives in the same city as Beverly and John likes bagels from Maine, etc. Nothing to do with the original post! If posts would stay on the topic I can see them staying open. Once they get so far off of the topic, I think that they should be ended.
I also think that posts that have been around for a long time should be closed with a note in the closing that a new thread should be started if you want to reopen this topic.
Sometimes I open a post that I think is interesting and find out that it is a very old post. After going to the end, I see that a poster has responded to something that was resolved six to eight months ago.
Just my opinion.

:agree: I agree, Z, on all points, especially the off-topic conversations. While they are fun for a few posts, it completely confuses or doesn't answer the originator's comment or question. I agree they should be closed at that point, or the topic cop should try to get it back on track.

I thought Russ Boston's post, on why he was leaving TOTV, was shut down way too quickly by the admin. Russ' comment "Things have just gotten too personal lately" was entirely appropriate and completely true, and then his statement was confirmed by some of the subsequent comments made on his post as they became personal! C'mon admins, why would you shut these kinds of posts down? Please explain. I think you should stop people from reprising four year old posts that only confuse people, but not current posts.

When post become personal as you noted above then the thread is subject to being closed. If a thread does not become personal then it would likely not be closed.

My 2-cents is to err on the side of leaving threads open. Perhaps Admin might post a gentle reminder to stay on topic if a few posts start veering the thread off course or delete offending posts.

ZWith all due respect, I disagree in part with Z. Sometimes going outside the box does have it's benefits. At times I have found interesting or useful information when things go off topic, including the making of new friends from my hometown or organizational involvements. I've also found some humor that's cheered me up when I've been down, and I'm sure that others must have experienced the same thing. When it goes too far astray or perputuates itself for too long, then that's where I would agree.
As for old posts, I consider them to usually be an archive of knowledge. Just because one was active on TOTV when the original conversation was going on doesn't mean that they are the only ones who can benefit from it. Later on, new members can also benefit from the knowledge that might exist there. I know that's been the case for me at least!
Having said all that, I will say that I've experienced some of what's being discussed with a degree of the same feelings, but at the same time I realize that this is not my personal forum and everyone is entitled to share the information, even into the future, dispite my personal feelings and unless comments are disrespectful, vindictive or mean't to undermine the creditability of one whose opinions disagrees with their own. But then, those situations would be the call of the Admin and not ours!

Sky, I agree that sometimes temporary hijacks add humor or warmth and make TOTV feel like family. As you said though, "When it goes too far astray or perputuates itself for too long," it obstructs the thread.

I agree as well. We all enjoy the banter, back and forth, etc. as part of the group dynamics. But at times the banter overwhelms the original topic, and then I think it is the call of the Admin to shut things down. I'm sure too, since the Admins are new, they are feeling they're way in managing the board. Personally I felt the last Admins were too lax - they took too long to respond when problems arose, things got out of hand at times as far as lack of respect for certain posters. I don't think they monitored the threads as closely as they shoudl have. I personally have been pleased to see how things are shaping up lately, particularly the focus on respect for everyone's opinons.

As a" NewBe" Lets be careful about the frequently thrown around word-
"Wannabe" you sound like look like act like statements!
As a NewBe if I was to call someone in my classroom a Wannbe! Well here in Rural Farm Country it could be fighting words to some of these kids.
That to them it refers to a White person trying to act like a Black person.
Take it for what it's worth that Wannabe statement could be hurtful to a new comer to this site.
Just a thought hope the bricks don't start getting throw this way.

As can be seen in the above definitions, these are all positive statements that describes the usage of the word wannabe. Without throwing bricks and with all due respect, I don't see why a regional abuse of the term should preclude it's usage outside the region where it is abused. Just saying!

If Party 1 calls Party 2 a name or makes a comment that a reasonable person would consider to be inappropriate, that is out of bounds and should be stopped by the admins. I think the admins have done a good job of this over the past three years I've been reading posts on TOTV. But in the situation where there was a little bit of heat in the thread about Russ Boston's departure, I really didn't see anything all that inappropriate. I think Russ probably expected some heat - and I think it was great that a couple of the posters, inadvertently for sure, helped confirm the argument Russ was making. But stopping the thread was a mistake, IMHO.

We replied above in post #11 regarding this.
As we have posted numerous times over the past couple of weeks our primary concern is to maintain respect for each member on the site and to protect the sponsors who pay to support the site. If a thread or post becomes negatively directed at a member this would be of concern. There are over 100,000 visitors a month to this site and almost 18,000 registered members. We will never get it right 100% of the time or would it be realistic for us to expect that we can satisfy 100% of the users. We would rather error on the side of maintaining respect for each other and each others opinions than not.
I hope this post helps. If you have questions that we can further answer or assist with feel free to PM or send me an email to talkofthevillages@gmail.com.

TOTV is similar to FACEBOOK
I just like to linger.
If ADMIN wants to quelch something - so be it
It's still interesting to linger!

Good point I had an active and popular thread going once and someone made a negative comment about a post someone else had made on my thread. The post and whole thread was deleted because of a comment someone else made to someone else's post. My thread should have been kept alive. I even received a few PM's asking me what happened to the thread.

I respect your opinion. And 20 years ago I would agree with you 100% .Good point and I see it from your side of the fence,
I don't do political correct unless it's demanded like in my job. I had a slip up one day and said that . Don't want to go back to that day ever again. I needed a helmet and seat belt on to hold myself in the black chair from the days getting ripped apart by HR. That said!
Most of us are in a profession that now a days requires PC and demands respect. I don't seem to remember that was the case in boot camp?
It is easy to assume I'm singing coom by yaaa in rocking in the corner thinking political correctness about Wanna be.
Nope the real challenge is try standing it in front of a 6 ft 250 lb Farm Kid who does not give a darn about political correct.
You just called him a WannaBe and you have about two secounds to think fast and save your life! Ahhhh most kids do not always references a dictionary. They are txting Mom Dad and the Social network of friends on the way to get the translation they want.
Believe me when I say on this site it may be Ok and a freedom of speech just don't try that in front of 25 12 grade students.

HervThanks for your response. I would like to reintinerate something I said that demonstrated that I did agree with you in a limited way, but state it in a different way. If I were in the position you describe, I would do the same as you and not use the term knowing it would cause anger or worse. But I doubt highly anything like that exists at TV and would not hesitate to use the term here or where I come from in NY.
I worked 26 years with the public up here in NY and dealt frequently with people that were angry, and even a few that threatened me. Not at a level that peace officers or military experience, but still quite aggressive. It was enough that some of our customers would tell me that they wouldn't want my job for anything! The experience has taught me tact and patience, but there were rare occasions where I lost it with some and let the political correctness take a back stage. It's hard not to do when they're yelling at you AND sticking and jabbing their finger right in your face over things that were not of your doing or your fault.
Probably the scariest moment was when I was told by a co-worker that a customer she knew, and that I took care of a few days prior, was going to come after me for failing to tell him something that he thought I should have. She claimed she knew him, intervened for me and talked him out of it. Thank goodness... either way! Anyway, that person was a former leader of a local chapter of the Hells Angels that was charged with murder a number of years before. :22yikes:
Anyway, good luck on your upcoming move and the preparation for it. We too have started that process for our upcoming move in October and can relate to what you're going through. :highfive:

I'm also a bit confused by the Title of the post, but I think I understand the some of the frustration.
I have been frustrated that a few of my posts were deleted several months ago and done so without the courtesy of informing me what it was that I did to violate the rules of the forum. Thinking I was doing something wrong, I simply re-posted several times only to find the post mysteriously disappeared. I contacted the administrator about my posts being deleted and I was informed it wasn't because I violated any rule, but the person I referenced in my post had been banned. Had the administrator taken the time to contact me after my first post was deleted, I would have understood why - whether I agreed or disagreed with his decision. Doing so could have been a great lesson learned, not only for me, but other members as well.
Yes, this is a informative forum that provides a great deal of entertainment and information. However, even with 18,000 members, I hope the new administrator(s) do a more effective job communicating to its members when they believe an infraction has occurred.
There is always room for improvement and this applies to both our TOTV members and its owners.

Thinking I was doing something wrong, I simply re-posted several times only to find the post mysteriously disappeared. You're not alone. It happened to me and others I know. If that wasn't bad enough, I even had my posting priviledges suspended without explaination, even when I asked. I was eventually restored but only after I apologized for what my wife thought might be the reason they preceeved... being that I was disclosing something (as a former website administrator for a statewide organization) about how the internet worked that could have a remote chance of scaring off a few forum members. What I posted was not something that was specific to this site, and it's almost always benign. It was what's called "spiders" and they've been crawling around the internet to every website since probably before most of us were even on the internet. So it doesn't scare anybody I'll briefly explain what it is in a sentence... A spider is software used by search engines like Google to index the internet, and it's needed to make them run. Want more info about it, just Google "definition: web spiders."

I visit here on a regular basis. I like TOTV.
There seem to be two groups of folks here.....People who live or own in The Villages, and folks thinking about it. I am a oddity here....I'm currently living in my NY home that is for sale and I own in a smaller community just south of you good people. TOTV is one way I get my "Florida fix".
That being said, I have most always been welcome here and I have tried to post helpful info and be respectful. I appreciate you all allowing an "outsider" like me to post.
The current new "Admins" will do fine. Respect is the word here. It seems that some of the frustration stems with how threads are managed.
I am a forum Moderator on one of the biggest, most active forums in the country. There we use the same v-bulletin software, etc. Perhaps if I may share some suggestions that we do on that forum, it may help.
We have a Terms of Service that folks agree to when joining. We have that posted as a sticky so that folks can read it more then just the first time when they join. Many folks do not even read the rules when joining, but they should.
As a Moderator there, I have the power to edit a post, (I do a "Mod Cut") if a small part of a post is bad....
If a post is off topic, a rant, disrespectful, etc, I will just delete the post and put a reason why. If I get to it too late and someone has posted a reply to that now deleted post, their post also gets deleted as an "orphaned post". This makes the thread then less confusing.
Since Moderators do have a life, and cannot watch things 24/7....there is a report feature where if someone posts something offensive, etc, anyone can click the report button and it goes right to a Moderator so they can deal with it, etc.
Folks, trust me....the "problems" here are nothing. This is a very smooth, quiet, well run forum with hardly any problems. You have no trolls, attackers, etc. You do not have to contend with Rep points, Infractions, Banning problem posters, fake IP addresses, etc.
Moderating is more of an Art then a Science. I do not always get it right on the forum I Mod. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater, as this forum in my opinion is wonderful.
Respectfully, Frank

First, I totally agree with Frank.
Second, Russ signed on yesterday as his name popped up at the bottom. Just go visit his statistics.
So I am sure he will keep taking private messages and I'm also sure many of his friends here are also on his facebook page. I also wish him well.
Third, many many posters have decided to stop posting like Russ. All I have seen have just left with no public thread posting of their decision to stop posting. I miss some of them. But the section is for The Villages, General Discussion. I am so glad every poster does not start a thread when they decide to stop posting.
Fourth, I also do not believe in the title of this thread. I am very impressed with the new Admin. I see a nice wide variety of people posting. As Frank and others have said, its a hard job to be an Admin of a forum.

Skyguy, Like you, I had more than one post disappear without explanation. In fact, gracie and I had one series of posts deleted with exteme prejudice. When I pressed for the reason, I was told that we were making fun of the Morse Hunting Fiasco and the attitude of the reply was rudely condescending. The admin was extremely off-base as Gracie and I were actually off-topic at that point. I am really looking forward to a less dictatorial and even-handed administration. Welcome to the new admin.
HOWEVER! I just read the thread about the needy school children that Admin closed and I am going on record that, lacking any explanation, closing that thread in that way tarnishes our reputation as the "Friendliest".

yeah. I think a lot more people wanted to say thanks to Russ. I don't post much, never met him, but he is a smart guy. I think some other people should have left, not him.
I remember threads that Russ said he was through with but came back a few posts later. He can't help himself. He will be back.

I kind of understood closing the Russ thread, simply because it had a high probability of going south and would probably have needed constant monitoring. But Im still scratching my head over the back to school thread being closed. That made no sense to me at all.

I have reviewed every post in this thread and believe one manner to avoid offending anyone is to speak to the subject or topic. If a member disagrees with a fellow member's comments then the member when replying should explain why he disagrees and not direct his/her words in a personal rebuttal. Even then I have seen some members take a burn because the subject or topic is kryptonite to them and so they attack. Conversely I see a great need in this country of ours to break free of political correctness because it shuts down true communications.
Another problem here has to do with character issues concerning prominent and well known people that are well know and published? What to do? what to say?
A priest friend once told me that I am by design a "naturalist" as we discussed the purposes of God's will. As a naturalist I accept that people are who they are and hence error often because they are just human. I therefore am not as quick to take umbrage when receiving a personal verbal attack because I reason that it must be this person had a bad day for whatever reason. And so my response would be to apply logic. Sometime it works and sometime I get a stick in the eye. But I prefer that approach because at least temporaily it a settled issue.
At this stage in my life my feelings don't get hurt too quickly. Life is too short. I enjoy TOTV it is a wealth of information both positive and negative helpful or funny. It is in fact a composite of the human experience. So continue doing what you do because that is who you are.

As Abraham Lincoln once said oh by the way I am taking a little poetic license in this quote. "you can please some of the people some of the time, you can please some of the people all of the time but, you cannot please all of the people all of the time

Yes, one good rule I subscribe to when Modding the forum I mod is...
"Discuss the topic, NOT the poster"
Sometimes the problem is simply a misinterpretation of the written word, because one cannot hear the tone of voice, see facial features, etc.
The other problem is that some folks are more bold and less tactful when they are behind a computer monitor......I doubt some would say or act the same if everyone here posting were face to face in one big room. There is an online anonymity that sometimes lends itself to being more bold and less tactful.

Excellent post, frank. As usual.

Hey Fumar,
I just noticed your new tagline. Now that's catchy. In fact, seems the whole country has caught the blame virus.

A priest friend once told me that I am by design a "naturalist" as we discussed the purposes of God's will. Silly me, and I always thought that a "naturalist" was a person who like to enjoy themselves in the all-to-gether; the way God placed them on this earth!
