What do you miss, if anything, about your former life before moving to TV?

Absolutely nothing except a few relatives and friends....but they are far more prone to visit us here, where there is sunshine year-round, than they did in the midwest.

I miss good beef. I'm from Texas where the beef is so tender you can cut it with a fork. Here it's so stringy you can't hardly get it down. I also miss making a decent wage. Other than that, not much.

Not a thing....really. Had a nice house, yard, location, friends. Here I have a nicer house, a nicer yard, a great location, wonderful friends.... AND hubby is retired and gets to enjoy those things, too!

Besides the obvious things like friends, family, etc., I miss wonderful home-grown tomatoes. I haven't had a decent tomato since moving to Florida!

Family and great seafood.

Only someone from the East Coast would move to Florida and miss seafood!:D That's the reason I'm moving there..no seafood here in Michigan (well, great lakes perch and walleye...delicious!)

Thanks to all of you who replied. Everyday I ask myself what would I miss if we moved to Florida. I would miss October festivals , tomatoes, sweet corn, and the grandkids. Since many of you are still there, I am going to assume that none of you would move back for the things you miss. It is going to be a hard decision --- and we haven't even made it down there yet for a preview. We are trying to decide if could completely let go of the midwest, or if we need to have a place here and one in TV. I guess TV needs to put in a corn field and tomato patch!

I have a few months left before becoming a frog, but I know that I'll miss having at least nine different places that will deliver food to our house, and that covers Italian, Chinese and Thai meals. We live in a small upstate NY village currently, and The Villages is much much larger. But during the two months we were there at the beginning of this year, we could only locate one "Pizza" place that delivered and one service that did restaurant pickups... and the pizza place would be our last choice compared to the six places here in NY!

I'm not there yet, but besides my kids and grandkids, I'm going to miss days like today, 70, low humidity...working outside on my landscaping...watching the leaves turn...watching them piling up on my landscaping...watching my bank balance as we pay someone to remove the leaves....watching the snow fall....watching my bank balance as we pay someone to plow and shovel it...watching the AAA truck as it pulls us out of the ditch...freezing my a** off as I scrape the ice off of my windows....leaving the house in the dark in the morning..again freezing the same area off....coming home in the dark...freezing my....Guess what???? Besides the family, I'm not going to miss a darn thing!!!!

Our son hated me saying "you can't have your cake and eat it too". Even now at 39, he still doesn't like it. In fact, my wife doesn't like it either. So, I am resigned to the fact that restaurants are not as good as Northern Virginia and the lack of gourmet and international grocery stores. I started Top 10 TV Reataurants posts and good dishes but many Villagers could't come up with 10. I'll also miss great theaters and concert halls but is NVA better than NYC? My wife said she's done cooking most of the time sooo...., I am o.k. going out. When thinking about TV, there are many, many things which will counter balance those thoughts. I love TV though I'll do my best to pitch for great restaurants, etc. Please help me.

Trish,

When you and your husband move to TV, you'd better take your snow shovel and ice scraper with you to avoid separation anxiety. Just hang them on the wall of your garage in your TV home and gaze at them lovingly! :)

Thanks to all of you who replied.......It is going to be a hard decision --- and we haven't even made it down there yet for a preview.......

Suggestion: Don't decide anything until you have come for a lifestyle preview stay or stay with friends/relatives. Most of us have given up on trying to describe the singular beauty that is the community of The Villages. There really is NO place like it.

When I miss an ear of sweet corn or vine-ripe tomatoes we grew, I just think about the hardship of bitter cold with wind that puts the wind chill far below zero for days; the lack of seeing sunlight for weeks on end; the skyrocketing heating fuel bills; the daily possibilities of slipping and falling on ice and cracking your head open or breaking bones/joints while fighting osteoporosis; never being able to walk outside barefoot for 8 months at a time; needing a 4-wheel-drive vehicle or tow truck to get going to work at 5:30 a.m; snowblowing the driveway for an hour only to have the beginning section filled in again when you finish the last section......repeat last task again...repeat last task again...hoping to be able to get to work in the morning...

The corn and tomato thoughts fade real fast!

Oh my gosh....... it is beautiful there! I have to ask, why are you moving from Panama?

We sold our business in Panama a few months ago and we were on the fence about remaining in Panama or heading back to the States.

Our biggest concern is that my wife and I both have aging parents who might need our help in the coming years. When my mother-in-law (who lives in TV) fell ill a couple of months ago, we decided to move sooner than later.

We all have things we miss. My wife and I lived in VA all our lives, but for the life of me, I can't think of a thing that would make us want to move back. We really love it here. She's doing better, heath wise, and we have not been homesick for the first minute. We left Roanoke on Oct 30 last year and have not been back. We're planning a visit later this month, but I don't foresee any desires to return permanently.

Once we can get moved to TV, I'll miss the $500 cars with $2,000 in 27-inch wheels. The loud music coming from the car behind me. The rude employees in many stores. The trash in Wal Mart parking lots and shopping carts everywhere but the cart returns. The hoards of lazy citizens who feel someone owes them a living! The unbelievable number of very obese people, many of whom wear clothing three sizes too small! (We all tend to add a pound or ten as we get older, but thanks to Mississippi, Alabama is the second most obese state!) :(

Are there really things I'll miss? Sure. Lived here most of my life, but we are ready for a little "paradise" and know where it is - TV!!

shopping carts everywhere but the cart returns.

Don't think you're leaving this behind by moving to The Villages. It's the same problem here and is one of my pet peeves! Drives me nuts to see someone too lazy to return the cart to a proper location. And yes, there may be an occasional shopper who has health issues which make it difficult for them to comply, but for the most part it's just plain lazy or the attitude that it's someone else's job to return the carts.

It is someone's job to retrieve the carts from the cart returns in the parking lots and bring them back to the store. It should not have to be their job to wander around the whole parking lot to retrieve one cart here and one cart there. I'm not saying to push your cart all the way back to the store. Please just put it where it belongs in the cart return rather than leaving it by your parking spot so it possibly rolls into someone's vehicle or in the middle of the empty parking spot next to you so that no one can park there. To me this is just being considerate of your fellow shopppers.

im sure it isnt the same where you shop, but at target stores the employees assigned to this function are also required to monitor the entire parking lot for carts and litter and anything that should be brought to mgmts attention. there job is an important function for the store. you will never find a target parking lot dirty or anything awry. also the lots are under camera surveillance.

It probably comes under "other duties as assigned". It's just a courtesy thing with me, I guess. It's just annoying to find what you think is a parking space only to find two carts (shopping buggies as we call them) right in the middle of the space!

I realize the "things I'll miss" are everywhere. But, in our seven trips to TV, they don't seem as bad, certainly not as bad as "Monkey Town" (trucker name for Montgomery).

Keep in mind, many of our "peeves" are like "who took the last cup of coffee and left the pot on the burner" at our work places!! chilout :D

Meanwhile, let's get back to the purpose of this thread!! :highfive:

I'll miss Krispy Creme, Catfish Cabin, great steaks at Ox Yoke, going to "T-Town" to see the Crimson Tide!!

I feel that one of my responsibilities in this life is to try to make others lives a little bit easier. Putting shopping carts into their spot in the lot is a given, it's hard to park around them and why would I want to make the employees run all over to get my cart. I feel the same way in stores...so many people move things, mess up stuff (unfolding clothing to see the size..then throwing them back onto the shelf unfolded...and don't get me started on dressing rooms and ladies rooms.....! If we all just use courtesy the world would be a lot better.

It's a bit of a drive, but WELL worth it - Laspada's on Lee Road in Orlando. They are from Philly. Have the meat and the BREAD shipped in from Philly. If you get itunes from a Mac product, it has a radio section. Click on jazz and about 100 jazz stations drop down from all over the USA. They even have talk radio where there is a few stations from my home city.

I have only been here 10 months and I do not miss anything from my old home up north.

Village Golfer,

Once again, we agree on something. I do not miss the Washington DC area at all. Real happy to be in The Villages.

Just in order to go out to dinner in the DC area, you had to plan on at least a 45 minute drive in heavy traffic - both ways. Here, we just get in the golf cart and have a choice of many good restaurants within a 15 minute golf cart ride.

Of course, we do go outside The Villages to a lot of very good restaurants, too.

Where did you move from?

I miss Famous Dave's BBQ, I checked and the nearest is in Tallahassee. They have the best Buffalo Wings anywhere. At lunch for $6.99 you get 6 wings plus celery with blue cheese dressing, baked beans, corn on the cobb and a muffin.

Since arriving here I tried wings at many places and found the best are at Sonny's and the worse are at Beef O'Bradys, they have almost no sauce on them. Unfortunately Sonny's treats wings like an appetizer. They serve ten for $6.99, which is a great price, but ten is too many and it comes with no celery or sides. Last time I ordered wings at Sonny's I added a side of baked beans and they turned out to be dry and stuck together, terrible beans, next time I'll try cole slaw.

Crab Cakes I would miss except my wife makes some of the best and we found crab meat available at Sweat Bay. Were having crab cakes tomorrow.

I do miss a good steak sub. If anyone is in the vicinity of Bel Air, MD go to Box Hill Pizza and get a steak sub. They are better than any you'll find in Philly. Box Hill is also noted for one of the best crab cakes in Maryland but I found them to be a little too rich.

Overall I do much more driving here. Living in Tamarind Grove it takes more than ten to twenty minutes to reach the places on 466 or 27/441. In Bel Air I could hit almost every major restaurant chain in less than ten minutes from my house.

In defense of driving, I did have to drive at least twenty to forty minutes to the six golf courses I played back in the Bel Air area. So far I've played Caine Garden, Havana and Mallory and drove to the course in my own cart and none of them took more than fifteen minutes.

[QUOTE=rubicon;381925]Ladydoc me too. I have been here for 5 years and have not gotten adjusted to the downsizing. We have a 2200 square foot house with golf cart garage and I feel like I'm in a sardina can?????(QUOTE)

I have owned about 15 houses, north and south, with and without basements. Biggest was about 3500 s.f. - 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, bonus room over the 3 car garage, den, family room, living room, dining room, etc. Don't miss it at all. In fact, it's very freeing to me. But, everyone is different.

I really think the secret is to get rid of "stuff." Be comfortable, not crowded. What do one or two people really need, use and enjoy? Pare down what you are really still interested in, and need, and sell or give away the rest.

This year will be our first fall in TV - didn't move down until November last year, coming back from Ohio this year in a couple of weeks. I will probably miss October in Ohio, probably the nicest time of year here. But I won't miss raking all those leaves!

For the most part we're very satisfied with our move here! No complaints!
But that being said, I do miss the song-birds of the upper midwest (robins and more)...lovely to listen to. Also miss the daffodils, crocuses, lilacs (but crepe myrtle are a great substitute and bloom a long time). I don't lament on the distance/time to get from one area to another---we're retired!!
Restaurants that are missed----CULVER'S!!! Not many others though. We've relocated and can't lament as this is a different area of the country with what is "native" to here.

Prepare a place of honor in your refrigerator and go to the website "jerseyporkroll.com" and order Taylor Pork Roll and Habbersett scrapple. The pricing and shipping might make this an occasional indulgence, but it is a righteous thing to do.

I miss just being "out there" on quiet evenings at anchorages like this one in the Turks and Caicos, with the sea gently lapping at the hull of the boat.

My friends. I miss the ballet, the restaurants. I miss my job. Strangely, I miss commuting (yeah, I know, I'm weird -- always liked commuting [was my downtime]).

The mountains. I miss camping every summer at Yosemite. There is something seriously wrong with a state where the highest point above sea level is 345 feet. Sailing the SF Bay. Boating on the Delta.

I love my bubble. I love the activities here. I love the people here. I love the cleanliness here. However, every time I leave the bubble, I'm absolutely miserable. I hate Florida (sorry, folks)!

Red:

Try tent camping at Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon (35 minute drive from TV) and also renting a canoe or kayak and paddle up and down the Rainbow River. Great Time! Bring a fishing rod and try your luck from the park pier. Take a drive to St Augustine, walk around one of the oldest towns in the US, do the evening cruise on the bay.

Fla may not have mountains but it does have some very interesting places.

(I miss looking out from our porch and seeing the largest lake in CA and the 4500 ft high volcano)(I sure do miss the summer temps in Oakland and the bay area)

I miss scraping ice off my windshield at 6 am before going to work.
I miss all one finger salutes you get on the Beltway around D.C.
I miss my car being vandalized in the parking lot at work.

No, come to think about it, I don't miss a darn thing since moving here.

A greater amount of computer and technology literacy. :) In TV the women seem to be more adventurous when it comes to using technology than the men.

I think a number of us have lived in different places during our lives. Missing things from previous home locales is, to me, a sign of appreciation for the nuances of being in that place at that time. Most recently, me and hubby are from MN. The folks that miss the sweetcorn are right on about that one. Also, NY and NJ are right on about the dearth of good pizza here. Last few days, in anticipation of NFL opener, we are searching to no avail to find a bacon dip for chips. All kind of small stuff. This, my friends, is culture shock. Move around enough and you are sure to experience it. One good friend focused on the irritation he experienced in another country that the door handle opened counterclockwise instead of clockwise. Another friend broke down after a few months and left Finland in search of garlic (??????)(you would think sunshine right? she was there in the winter!). We are so fortunate to experience the things we do that I think missing things is a barometer of our wealth of opportunities. JMO.

LOL LOL :a20: :a20:

TV needs to open a snow shovel/ice scraper museum. Maybe the museum can also display a large pile of bags of rock salt/ice melt donated by TV residents.

fresh seafood, corn, tomatoes and fresh vegetables.

So, seems like we will give up much when we move. Guess I will miss the Amish horse carts, the Amish egg & vegetable stands. The family of deer who live in our wooded land which come out once in awhile to show off their fawns.

So, no tomatoes or Sweet White corn available down there? Guess I will have to plant my own.

Will also miss the seven Friday free symphonie orchestra with guests concerts at a local liberal arts college. Bring your own chairs, tables, either bring food or buy from dozen vendors.

I will miss cleaning up after Hurricane Irene. Cleaning out damaged goods from cellar that had 2ft of water in it for several days while power out. Cutting up 10 60ft plus trees. Fixing roof damaged by Hurricane. Sorting out food to see if damaged by loss of power to freezers and refrigerator.

And the invocation of Hurricane clause in homeowners insurance so that now 1% of insured value, not $1000.

Maybe not.

Mainly my wife's idea to move, she has a friend down in the Villages.

No Hard shell Blue Crabs?

At least there are Knights of Columbus Councils and an Assembly.

Bavarian

Must go back to cleaning up from Irene. Ten big hardwoods down, plus more in woods. Basement flooded with 2inches water when power failed.

Had a bolt of insulation down there, now so saturated, I can't carry it up the stairs. Get another trunk load ready for transfer station. We take our own trash to transfer station, cheaper than trash hauling, and that is where recycling bin is. A trash compactor is great. Hope I can take it with us.

And since a named hurricane, Homeowners deductible raised from $1000 to 1% of insurred value, so a lot of out of pocket, including Geo-heatpump.

Well maybe I won't miss the Hurricane cleanup, but is it not worse in The Villages? How is power, should I bring a generator?

Larry Wilson
09-08-2011, 12:52 PM
Bavarian,
Been here 7 years and have never needed a generator. Never lost power where I live. A few homes were once hit by a tornado and I never saw so many people help out. Cleaned up much faster than was on CNN! You will be as safe here as anyplace. We are inland.

Bavarian
09-08-2011, 01:40 PM
Interesting, FP&L was always notorious for power failures, being on a peninsula.
Re tornado, had tornado warning here last night and apparently one sighted a little North of here. Just used that time to try and clean-up more wet boxes in cellar. Missed some of the Debate and AGT, but Tivo AGT. Tivo with DirecTV every show my wife and I like, so if we miss it, we can watch it later in half the time by skipping commercials.

Have deposit on land in Village of Sumter, backing on Preserve. Have a year to build.

2BNTV -- for your friends who say they will visit but you think they won't -- the first winter you are in TV send them a photo of yourself standing at some scenic spot in TV and ask them how they are enjoying the snow and cold! Maybe they will show up the next day :).

I wasn't sure just what type of bacon dip you were looking for but I googled 'bacon dip recipes' and there were a lot. Here's one, seemed pretty easy . CREAM CHEESE & BACON DIP

2 (3 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese, room temperature
1/4 c. sour cream
2 tbsp. milk
4 slices bacon, cooked & crumbled
2 green onions, chopped
1 tsp. cracked black pepper
Assorted fresh vegetables

Beat cream cheese until fluffy. Stir in remaining ingredients. Serve with vegetables
