View Full Version : Pizza of your choice

One thing I have noticed on TOTV is there seems to be a want/ need for a better pizza place.
If you had your choice, what type of pizza place would you like to see in or nearby TV? A particular chain pizza or a New York, Chicago, or other type?
Should it be in one of the town squares?
Just trying to see if they is an opportunity waiting...

I would love a Papa Murphys Take & Bake around here. Their Gourmet Chicken Garlic is so good. Haven't had one for over five years since we left Wisconsin.
Being at one of the Squares, or even golf cart accessible isn't that important to me. I'll get there however I have to as long as it's in the general vicinity.

As a New York boy of Italian parents, I've got to say, and everyone here knows this, that it's tricky to get a good pizza here. Most places here, I've found, undercook the pizza and the crust has no bite to it.
But here's what you do. Paulie's Pizza and Bravo Pizza both have a good sauce and basically a good dough. Just ask them to cook it well done, not to burn it, but to cook it well. Trust me, you'll like it.
My suggestion: Go to Bravo's Pizza in LSL; use my instructions for a well done pie. While you're waiting for your pie with you best girl or guy, they'll bring you a basket of delicious garlic knots and a red sauce dip as a free appetizer. A glass of red wine is in order if you want to kick it up a notch. It's a great way to start the festivities in the square.

My favorite is Papa Gino's Pizzeria, a New England based chain. Yum! Had some last night and mentioned to my hubby that it would probably be the last really good pizza before returning to TV in a couple of weeks.

Seems most pies around TV are either the flatish NY style (think Pauly's, Bravo) or the flatbread (think Urban, Mallory).
Is there anywhere that is more of a Scilian style? Not Chicago deep dish. Eons ago we used to live in RI and there was a place in N. Providence called Twins. Our favorite at that time but haven't found similar in/near TV.

If you are willing to take a drive for your pizza dinner there is a place in Belleview (West 5 miles on 441) that makes it worth the trip. Belleview Pizza makes your pizza fresh and delicious and hot! If you are one who enjoys trying something new, then try the white chicken pizza. I have always been a traditionalist when it comes to pizza but this was one exception that was worth it. :eclipsee_gold_cup:
They are very busy, so if you don't like waiting, then Belleview Pizza is not your place and you must pay $ only for your dinner, but the prices are very reasonable. You will not be disappointed (well most won't) if you try their pizza. :pepper2:

Chicago-style deep-dish pizza (a pizza with a flaky crust that rises an inch or more above the plate and surrounds deep piles of toppings) was created by Ike Sewell at his bar and grill called Pizzeria Uno.

MEMORIES: We grew up on "Toni and Ann's" Pizza. It was a little tiny pizza place owned by Tony and Ann in Chelmsford, MA.. They would close and go South for the Winter and people would flock to by frozen pizza's and freeze them. We couldn't wait until Tony got back in the Spring to reopen. It's been closed for years now but the children decide to open up again , this time in Dracut, MA. The place was a gold mine.
Here is the link http://dinerhotline.wordpress.com/2009/12/12/legendary-tony-anns-pizza-to-reopen-after-7-year-hiatus/
We would go to Tony' after dancing at the "Commodore" Ballroom on Saturday nights :-)........The good old days.

Everyone seems to think where they come from has the best pizza. I can't tell you how many times I've visited NY and at the best had only a mediocre pizza. I grew up in Miami and judge pizzas from what I remember in the 50's.
It's what you are used to. Same goes for NY bagels. My first 10 years were in Pittsburgh and swear the hot dogs there were better than anywhere else in the world. I'm sure that there would be those that disagree.

Who has the best pizza? It's a question that's probably on equal footing with the age old questions of what came first, the horse or the carrage, or the chicken or the egg! So I have to say that the question is purely relative.
As for me, I feel that I'm currently lucky because in the small upstate NY village I live in I have a choice of six - yes - that six different places I can get pizza and all of them deliver to my home. They are all unique, with different charactistics, sizes and shapes, and not a one that's part of a chain like Pizza Hut, Dominos or Papa John. Also, there's not a one of them that I don't like.
In a couple of months though, that luck will end when we'll have moved to our home in TV. We will then no longer be able to order from any of those six pizza places, and that to me is one of my few negatives about moving to TV. During our two month stay, after closing on our TV home in January, we only discovered one place that delivers pizza, and it's Papa Johns, a chain operation, and you can't order other Italian meals and more like I can with the 6 local places. I feel that any of the six up here in NY are better, but at the same time we find Papa Johns acceptable and will still order from them unless a better option comes along in the future!

Uno was a small neighborhood grill opened in 1943. It was 1978 before anyone outside of that local neighborhood knew of it, when another fellow persuaded Mr.Sewell to give rights to expand the market and focus on the pizza recipe.
It was obviously well marketed, and God Bless their success. I just don't consider it "Chicago Style Pizza". That is a marketing tag, nothing more.

Hungry Howie's is definitely NOT the place to go for good pizza. The crust is very chewy (yes, I have all my own teeth), the sauce is extremely bland as well as spread very thing, and the cheese pizza basically has very little cheese on it.

What happened to Cane Garden's pizza? I recall it being on a hand-tossed, flavorful, thin crust. But the last time I had it, it was on a small, thin, flavorless, cracker-like crust that looked pre-formed because it fit the round serving platter (not a plate) exactly. Two of us had pizza and the crusts were identical. Now I don't mind a thin crust pizza, but I like real pizza dough, and this looked like something bought in bulk, pre-formed and pre-cooked with special serving plates that match its size. Just slap some sauce on it, throw it in the oven to melt the cheese and serve it. Very quick and cheap. I hope this is a temporary thing.

Haven't found one that good here! Papa Johns is probably the best this area has to offer but where I come from it's not in the top 10. Bravos is probably the worst I've had here ..but jmo! Wish this place existed here it's in the Boston area...http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCUQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yelp.com%2Fbiz%2Fpizzeria-regina-boston-4&ei=OXJtTtCqEYGWtwetifn3BQ&usg=AFQjCNFMw-PaeohZnRsLzHp-EOV3YvDEFw&sig2=nciAC-e4U3DP0h76pgu66Q

When I first moved to the SF Bay Area in the early 70's I met a lady who was also from the Chicago Area who missed good pizza too. She was a medical sales rep and had to go to Cleveland for monthly meetings. She would always go thru O'Hare and bring a pizza back with her.

We go every Monday night and last night Tim even made me a white pie just like home. Mrs. H had a great calzone. It's all good and Tim Just had a birthday yesterday

Sounds great! Do you take orders?:D
Back in the day we would have big pizza parties for the neighborhood. Man the pizza's were flowing as fast as the beer and wine.
another neighbor would do a pig roast. Had designed a roast pit in his back yeard that he could revert back to landscapping

It's hard to find a good authentic Neapolitan pizza anywhere but if there's anything like anywhere in or near TV, I'm in.
My maternal and paternal grandparents were from the Naples area. My Dad favorite was Neapolitan pizza.

Hungry Howie's is definitely NOT the place to go for good pizza. The crust is very chewy (yes, I have all my own teeth), the sauce is extremely bland as well as spread very thing, and the cheese pizza basically has very little cheese on it.
I heard from a waiter at Olive Garden that the best pizza is TJ's.
The waiter is correct TJ's is the best:)

Hedoman, Pauly's Pizza sauce tastes like tomato sauce. The only good thing I can say about that place is they have the best garlic knots.

Best pizza in Fl. by far is Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, but the closest is in Orlando. If you ever get there also have to try there wings. Oven roasted with olive oil, hint of garlic and rosemary and then smothered in caramelized onions, and served with wedges of focaccia bread. AMAZING.

Help!
Mallory CC will make the crust anyway you like. Thick, thin, or in between.

Cane Garden is more like a flat bread crust. We believe that Mallory CC has the best traditional crust. Hand tossed and pressed in corn meal so the crust has a crunchy, nutty taste, Try it, you wont be disappointed and it right here in the neighborhood !

I enjoyed the last two pizzas I ordered from Toscani's in Mulberry. I thought they were better than the Pauly's pizza that used to be in Mulberry.
The pizzas are much better than when they first opened.

I usually like thin crust pizza as does my wife but we went to Snappy Pizza the other night on Bichara Blvd. and their pizza is quite good even though it's not thin. The sauce is excellent and they use crumbled sausage instead of sausage slices which most other pizza places use. We plan on going back. The small pizza was just the right size.

We used to love the Snappy's two medium for $13 on Tuesday but they discontinued that offer.

I am also having serious withdrawal from Cincinnati Chili.

We New Yorkers were pleasantly surprised. Stopped there today, had a large pizza and brought two small ones home for friends. So far, it's the BEST we have had in Florida........next stop Belleview Pizza up North .......friends highly recommend that too.

We have found that the best pizza & food is at Stavros. It's on 441/27 going towards Leesburg, just past a Wendy's on the right. It is the original Stavros location. Good food.

Is it the Polish version of Hunter's Stew, i.e. Bigos?

Gosh, I had to look that one up on the internet as I have never heard of it! I did see some similarities when I read that Bigos has cabbage and sausage in it. The recipe I have calls for cabbage and keibasa, although I have used half keilbasa and half meat balls. It has other vegetables and tomato sauce among the ingredients. I bake mine in the oven in a big turkey-size roasting pan. The recipe makes a lot of stew!
