Can't help with stopovers as I'm a wannabee from Chicago, but I just want to congratulate you on your upcoming move to TV. Less than 4 months now - you must be getting excited. What village will you be living in?.

My wife and I did that drive regularly (New Paltz, NY to TV) and we usually stop in Smithfield, NC as it is just about half way, lots of good restaurants in the area, there are plenty of places to walk our little dog, and most importantly (for my wife), there is an outlet mall right there. I don't remember which hotels we have stayed at that were "pet friendly" but I know there were at least a couple.

http://www.roomsaver.com/
http://www.i95travelinfo.net/
http://www.gasbuddy.com/

these are a few of the websites i found most helpful when we first started driving between nj and fl.

leaving from the jersey shore on a saturday at 8 a.m.ish with a stop for dunkin donuts when starting out, fuel at the maryland house, a pit stop at the va welcome center, fuel and burger king just over the nc border and an hour stop to shop at jr's in smithfield, nc we usually make it to florence, sc in 8 to 9 hrs - depending on traffic [which is way better on a sat!].

it leaves us about a 6 hr drive on sunday [with a late 9 a.m.ish start and either a leisurely breakfast stop at shoney's in manning, sc or a lunch stop at pelican point in some town in ga and a rest room/fuel stop in waldo, fl. :D and that is via the florida travel route of 295 to 10 to 301 with its well advertised speed traps in waldo and lawtey - and the ever changing speed limits - and sunday traffic from ocala to the villages!

i can't wait to do it again - but, alas- must wait til january. oh, wee, we have foliage season inmaine to look forward to in the mean time! :D

Travelling with a pet , the best place we found was the Jameson Inn in Dunn Nc. Not all Jameson Inns are the same but this one received fairly good reviews on trip advisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g49090-d236413-Reviews-Jameson_Inn_Dunn-Dunn_North_Carolina.html)
and we stayed here in May 2011. Going rate is about $79 per night plus taxes plus $15 per pet. You can find discount rates for this hotel by picking up a travel/hotel magazine(Room saver or travel coupons) at the state rest stop and look for Dunn NC ..I think the coupon rate is $59. PLace was very clean, quiet,Bkfst, fairly easy on/off of Rte 95, and internet access. Local resturants were not easy to find but we did go to a decent steak house about 1 mile down the road.

You can stay in alot of "flea bags" that accept pets unless you want to go to a pet friendly hotel that charges a $100 pet fee. Dont get me wrong this is a discount hotel but it was good (better than good) for a one night layover.

The Jameson Inn in Smithfield, NC is where we stayed last time we made that trip with our dog (mid-July). Very clean, very convenient, restaurants (we usually eat at Outback when passing through), shopping, and a movie theatre all within walking distance. For some reason they upgraded our room to a suite but charged us the standard room rate.

We come from the Philly area and stop over in Florence SC. From there it is only about 7.5 hours to TV.

We stay in Holiday Inn's that take pets and have always had good luck w/cleanliness. They have a good website to show which hotels allow pets. We've stayed off I-95 at Florence, S.C. and Savannah, GA area.

Congratulations and good luck on your move.

On a good day, 12 hours from Long Island would put you at South of the Border. From there...6 hours to St. Augustine...from there....2 hours to TV! Florence, SC would probably be your best best...south of South of the Border. Smithfield (Exit 95 off I-95) is the half-way point...550 miles for us. Sleep Inn...clean rooms. Usually around $80. You should be able to make it past that if you want to do 12 hours.

We go to TV from Myrtle Beach and sometimes stop in Brunswick, GA at the Hampton Inn. Our dog loves it! It is five hours from TV.

We've been impressed with most of the LaQuintas on I95. They charge NO pet fee. Some of the "pet friendly" hotels charge as much as $100 per night for pets and I don't consider that exactly "pet friendly". Holiday Inn Express is our second favorite but they charge at least $10 pet fee and sometimes more.

Good luck and welcome!

My dogs love pet-friendly Red Roof Inns.

We've had good luck with some LaQuintas and Residence Inns (two small dogs). We're lucky now that we live close enough to make it in one day. Advice regarding the Jameson Inns in Dunn and Smithfield sounds good. I've not stayed there, but know others who have with same impressions as 784Caroline and Captain Jon. Have a safe trip!
