Hi All,
I have a request foor those of you out there with the means to support two courageous young ladies(my two nieces) who are trying to support a cause which has effected their family (& mine).Huntington's Disease is a brain disorder that eventually leads to a long painful death.Although it is probably too late for their mom hopefully their fundraising efforts will lead to a cure so they & their siblings & offspring will live long lives. It takes people at a very young age.My sister-in law is only 48 ! Please Help.Below are the links to where you can donate ...Thanks!!
For anyone who doesn't know, my mom was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease a little over 3 years ago, and I'm running in my first 5K on September 17th to raise money in her name for the Huntington's Disease Society of America - the largest non-profit voluntary health agency dedicated to finding a cure for HD, and providing support for families dealing with the disease, like mine.
("Running", of course, is a relative term, covering everything from jogging to crawling to whining like a big sissy girl.)
To make things interesting, my younger sisters and brother have decided to engage in a little East Coast - West Coast battle by doing the exact same walk in Boston at the exact same time that I am running here in LA. Obviously they have the strength in numbers (and the luxury of, you know, WALKING) but I'm determined to prove that the West Coast is, in fact, the best coast, and could use all the help I can get:
1. Help by donating to my cause here: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/nikkicollette/hdsa-la5kolympicday . It's super easy, all the money goes directly to the HDSA, and I'm willing to offer embarrassing photographic proof of how out of shape I am crossing the finish line to anyone willing to toss a few bucks my way. Also, I make really good cake balls.
2. Run/walk/crawl with me in LA, the more the merrier! (or, if you're one of many who find that to be a geographical challenge, walk with the rest of my family in Boston - this is a battle I know I can't really lose - info is here: http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/daniellecollette/teamhopeboston)
Any help you could give would be incredibly appreciated - even if it's just a little bit of luck ;)
xoxo

Hi Everyone!
For those of you who don't know my mother was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease a little over 3 years ago, just shortly after my uncle passed away from complications also associated with the disease.
Huntington's Disease, or HD, is a hereditary degenrative brain disorder that results in a loss of cognitive, behavioral and physical control, which diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. More than 30,000 people in the United States are currently diagnosed with HD, including my mother, and because the disease is genetic, my siblings and I are among the 200,000 people nationwide who are at-risk of developing the disease down the line. And while there is currently no treatment or cure for the disease, huge breakthroughs are being made and scientists are optimistic that they will be able to find a cure in the near future.
Unfortunately, there's never been much I, or my family, could do. I can't conduct research or work in a laboratory, because as an English major it's been very clear my whole life that logic wasn't something I could really grasp. However, I refuse to be helpless. This walk gives me and so many others the chance to stand up and support those who can do the research we cannot, and to stand up for our co-workers, friends and family who not only live with this disease but carry on day by day.
So, on September 17th, I will be walking for my mom, Patty. A mother who always manages to lose the television remote in the kitchen, could defeat Superman in a contest of laundry prowess, makes the best grilled cheese sandwich, and never forgets to ask you how your day is. A woman who will sit on the phone with you for four hours listening to you ramble just because of one bad teacher in college, or be the first to stand up at the curtain call of your first big musical, and a woman who loves her children unconditionally and deserves more than anyone, this one day of recognition.
I'll be walking with my family, and would love for you to join! If you'd like to become a part of my team just click on the "Team" tab above, and if not feel free to donate!
Thank you guys! :)
Always,
Dani
