gov christie has ordered mandatory evac from long beach island and voluntary evac from the barrier island from seaside north; but no orders to leave atlantic city!

mayors of the local beachfront towns from pt. pleasant beach north through monmouth county are asking residents to head for higher ground; and most towns are opening emergency centers that will get residents to a county emergency facility.

water, batteries, flashlights and generators are pretty much gone from store shelves.

nyc mayor bloomberg REALLY has a mess on his hands! computer models are tracking the storm to follow the same path as floyd [i think floyd] that flooded lower manhatten from the battery to canal street!!!!

mass transit will likely shut down sat afternoon and resume when possible. trains to the hamptons will be cancelled tomorrow. mayor is asking folks to leave the low lying areas tomorrow and join friends on the high ground for dinner and the weekend! also suggested folks with cars in city garages may want to go and park them in park n ride lots - in n.j. or westchester county!

jersey folks in the villages might want to follow the state preparedness at the asbury park press http://www.app.com or the star-ledger http://www.nj.com/starledger

if you have kids/grandkids near the coastal areas of nj - this is no joke! make them evac if not for themselves but so the YOU don't have to worry!

Wouldn't you know, our neighbors here in the Villages just left this morning for their home in Long Island. :(

angiefox10 - you're welcome...hope you enjoy the newspaper accounts! i gotta say, mayor bloomberg has his pre-planning so detailed on this one that he has plans already being implemented to move seriously people to other hospitals, challenged patients from nursing homes relocated and seniors moved into emergency centers! phew! and the north shore animal league is arranging for foster homes for pets that have to be evac'ed!

My sister lives in Ocean City and the city gave them a mandatory evaculation order for everyone to be out of there by 5 pm tomorrow night and residents of Cape May County out by 8 am tomorrow morning.

No...they just came down for the week with their grandson so they could go to Disney before school starts up. She said they're going over to their bungalow to close things up and probably stay with her sister in law till the hurricane goes through. They aren't due to be back down till October.

Who woulda thunk it that it would be safer in Florida than New York City when a Hurricane was about to strike??

Floridians are breathing a sigh of relief for themselves, but not for others who will have to deal with this enormous storm. It's larger than the state of Texas according to tv reports this morning.

I have relatives in New England and they live on the shore. Many hurricanes have come and gone, but this one is large, slow moving and has very strong winds. Howling winds for hours and hours are very dangerous. Storm surge can move houses, cars, anything in its path. Better to be safe rather than sorry. My prayers are offered for all to be out of harm's way.

Exactly! We were lucky this time....very lucky. A week ago, it looked like we'd get a direct hit in Florida.

Thanks for the information. I live in Central NJ less than 5 miles from the coast. We are getting ready to move to TV in November. Didn't think I would have to worry about a Hurricane in NJ. What ever will be will be, can't stop it. Where I live we aren't worried about flooding only sewer and storm drain back ups, also wind damage. We are as prepared as we can be. We checked to make sure that we have a couple of cases of wine so were good to go. Good luck to all in the storms path.

We live in Brick but just over the Rt. 70 bridge right next to Pt. Pleasant. All is quiet now but I'm sure it will be exciting later. We're hunkered down and hoping for the best. But now you start to look around and we see some awful big pine trees not that far from the house. Never gave them a second thought until today:sad: I'm sure we'll all get by with sunny skies in the forecast and TV's full time in our future.

The big problem with this one is that it is moving really slow and is huge with a lot of rain that is causing flooding. The winds aren't all that strong but if you have saturated ground, you do have the possibility of trees coming down. I understand it has been very wet in the NE this year so that could definitely be a problem. Overall, it was not really that bad as it went through NC with the exception of a lot of rain at the coastal areas. Here in the Raleigh NC area we had some wind and rain but really nothing to speak of compared to some other storms we have had this summerr.

Happy to report we rec'd no damage from Irene. Very heavy rains, probably the hardest I've ever seen it rain, but no trees came down nor did we lose power!!!!! Still a little windy as I write this but we know it's on it's way further North. Some of the areas around us are without power which started last night after midnight and I'm sure there is major beach erosion but all in all I think the Jersey Shore escaped major destruction.

Like everyone else I know, I would so much rather hear it is somewhat a "non event" than a huge disaster.

Glad to hear you are o.k.!

While our SI, NY home has no power, the storm did little damage. Most of the flooding was to the C and D zones.......

FINALLY got a computer connection!!! not the best speed - but a connection! made it thru the hurricane with all of the shingles, plants and the pool as good as before it came! but others in town - not so lucky! a mini tornado spawned along the beachfront [just a llittle more that a mile away] and lifted the roof off of a condo bldg and dropped it a short block away on the ocean blvd at 1 in the morning! emergency responders came from miles around to assist with the injured and those in need of evacuation! never left the house today, so can't report on how much beach eroded - but i'll bet it's a lot! south of us in asbury park the ocean surge moved concrete and wood benches some 8/9 ft from a boardwalk railing into the middle of the boardwalk! north of us a sink hole developed on the ocean ave to the north side of sea bright. in the town of spring lake the ocean covered the beach and tore up a beautiful boardwalk that ran the length of the town - boards look like a roller coaster track! basically our town fared well with only flooding in the expected areas and the one major disaster at the condo bldg. no first responders reported serious injuries and the volunteers who were on standby even got some rest after about 4 in the morning...until late this morning! the paid crews and volunteer fire crews have been running ALL DAY LONG to investigate downed wires...cable and tele can be ignored and left for residents to contact providers...but the downed power wires are a MESS! and the winds have been too strong for the electric company bucket trucks to go up in the air for repair! i wouldn't mind if my ac had a brief power failure - now that hubby is home from his standby day he has the cooling down to igloo level! i will shortly don my sweats and mock turtle neck shirt and just enjoy his being home from the 'wars' as well as the fact that we have power - for now! until i can connect again - ciao!

NJ. glad you are ok. The pictures posted on facebook are amazing. So mamy of my old stomping grounds appear to be flooded. Irene may have come ashore as "just" a category 1 or tropical storm, but she made herself felt!

thanx for the good wishes! awoke to a beautiful sunny day and life is getting back to normal for most of us in central n.j. - those in northern and western sections of the state are still reeling from flood waters :(

glad to be a state worker retiree, too! traffic getting into trenton this morning was nothing short of traffic knots - not just snarls! flooded roads and detours kept most everyone from getting to work on time! so glad it wasn't me!

? of the day - does hubby take the unused generator back to home depot now, save it 'til the day before the return policy expires, or offer it up on ebay/craig's list? have made enuf decisions myself - this one is his!

We live over 150 miles north of New York City in the home my parents built about 57 years ago. Our NYS village is where the Hudson River and the Mohawk River meet, about 10 miles north of Albany. There have been several floods here over the years, but only about two times have the floods affected our home. We are about two and a half blocks away from the highest point the water normally reaches during a flood, but we're affected today by storm drain backup.

So here, 7 weeks before we make the permanent move to TV, the unexpected happened! We again got hit this afternoon. It's not as bad as many have experienced, but we did get a few inches in our basement this afternoon. Packed boxes are affected, but we won't know until tomorrow afternoon after we're pumped out what the damages are. Anyway, our power co. just arrived to turn the power to our furnace off so it won't be damaged. Oh well, such is life and my best wishes go out to those who have more serious situations than I do to deal with!

Thinking of you skyguy. Hope everything goes well for you! Thanks guys, we should be ok by tomorrow night! BTW Bill, can you ship me a couple of crates of popcorn? I think it will help absorb the excess moisture after the pumping! Ah, never mind! It'll make too much of a mess to cleanup afterward! :a20:

Skyguy, just keep repeating to yourself "In 7 weeks we will be frogs." Hope your packing boxes aren't too badly damaged. Thanks for the good thoughts! We never did get pumped out last night as the FD wanted the power out in the house and our power company never showed up to make the disconnect. * However, the good news is that the water in the basement has begun to recede and a friend will be coming by around noon with a pump to remove the rest.

Also on the good news side is that my wife and that friend had just finished going through most things in the basement last week and the boxes affected are all things that were set aside for an estate sale that will take place after we leave for FL. The boxes going south were moved up out of the basement and into the garage last week too! Maybe mother nature is telling us we should clean the basement floor?

Hopefully we'll be able to say afterward that it was, relatively speaking, as inconvenient as tee'ing off and having your golf ball sail into the pond; just a temporary setback that you'll soon forget about!

* I mentioned in my first post that the power company had arrived. Actually they just assessed the situation and didn't disconnect at that time. They were supposed to return a second time and didn't!

skyguy - so glad to hear about the boxes! good news indeed! still hi and dri here at the jersey shore. we are sooooo lucky! one mile east of us an entire section of town [and i mean blocks!] is and has been without power since sat when the mini tornado took the roof off an apt bldg and dropped it into the street - taking power and phone lines with it!!! our only problem is not having a data tele line for the 'puter and having to wait until late at nite to go online...cannot complain about that one tiny bit! but a tele tech is scheduled to resolve that in "about a week"!

stay strong, skyguy! you have so much to look forward to - and events such as yours make for great conversation and memories of the move!

We Vermonters have been following the aftermath of "Irene" on your neck of the woods as well as our own, via Channel 10 out of Albany, New York.
Take it one day at a time. Best of luck. Mother Nature is a fickle lady.

We have family members in New Jersey near Princeton who have the worst flooding in ten years.......Vermont and New Jersey are the worst hit states.
We have relatives in North Carolina who lost the main road to their summer house on the outer banks. Stories of devastation up and down the coast.

Vermont has been devastated. Total towns isolated when bridges and roads were washed away by the powerful flood waters from streams and rivers.

Not even the Governor imagined it would wreak this much havoc on an INLAND STATE. Hurricanes are supposed to hit Florida, right? Seriously, roads that we take to go north to our daughter's are GONE. Roads to cross the mountains GONE. Rt. 9 is washed away from Bennington to Brattleboro in Wilmington, a town that remains isolated. Rt. 4 up at Killington, also destroyed. Rt. 7 from Bennington to the north , parts missing. All over the state..........I believe it's 260 state roads GONE.....bridges gone. Rt. 2, etc.
So many roads impassable as they are GONE. Even in Florida this would never happen..........unless it was the Keys.

Vermont's covered bridges flooded or floating away. Cars, cows, propane tanks, furnaces, houses, you name it, floating down rivers. People seeing towns over the border in N.Y. State swept from their foundations.
No one expected this in Vermont or N.Y. State.

Again, chin up......good luck with the clean up.SC, thanks for the encouragement. As I mentioned previously, we are in pretty good shape compared to many many others up here. A neighbor just 3 houses away had 5 feet of water in their cellar compared to only about a foot in ours. When they pumped it out it was probably the source of some of the water in our basement. The basement is probably dry by now and our friend will be by in about an hour to relight our hot water heater. Where this adds insult to injury is in the fact that about a month ago we had our cellar floor flooded by a blockage in our drainage system. That actually caused more damage that this flood did and it took several days before we even realized it happened: can you say... mold? :evil6:

We've been commiserating with all of you in N.Y. State, esp. Prattsville in the Catskills , plus the Amsterdam area and all the farmlands in beautiful upstate New York. Take care. Hope the next hurricane does not come up here.Interesting that you mentioned Catskills and Amsterday. We are located at the mouth of the Mohawk River and the flood waters were the results of run off from the Catskills and the Adarondacks. Both have tributaries that feed into the Mohawk including Schoharie Creek! About 24 years ago the run off from the Schoharie Creek caused a bridge to collapse killing several people. One of the victoms was the next door neighbor of one of my employees back then. You can read more about it at:

Was that on the N.Y. Thruway? I do remember that. Was it a white cadillac that went into the water? We were just chatting about it the other day.
That was a heck of a weekend in Vermont as well.

We've been watching the ABC News with Meteorologist Steve Caporizzo showing pics and talking about the Schoharie Creek and how wide it became during the recent rains. Frightening. Plus so many farmers lost their barns, animals, etc. Widespread destruction in both states......yours and ours.Yes, it was the Thruway. I've driven over the new bridge many times since and every time I approach the bridge I can't help thinking about those who dropped to their deaths that day!
