It is 3 am Sunday morning. The ETA of Irene is @ 4a.m. It is raining, windy now, but I am sure it will get a lot worse. You guys might have heard of all the shelters set up for all the people in dangerous areas. You might also have heard that many people refused to go to these shelters. A big issue is "NO PETS ALLOWED."

How can a family go to safer ground and leave their pets behind to fend for themselves? Animals are part of the family and I wouldn't leave my pets behind. There are some people on TOTV (We know who you are) that don't believe leaving animals behind is a big deal, but for others, it would be devastating.

Although my location in Ronkonkoma is of no flood danger, I know of a few people in lower areas who are at risk and won't evacuate because of the fear of leaving their pets behind. It is time for the poliical bigshots to wake up and set up shelters so that ALL members of a family can be together in times like this.

I thought they learned from Katrina that not letting people take their pets wouldn't work. I was heartbroken when I saw pets fending for themselves I too would not leave my pets... I know some people would not understand that but, I just couldn't!

Many of the shelters on Long Island allow pets. Due to people who have pet allergies, you must also have shelters that do not allow pets.

I would not, under any circumstances, leave my dog behind. I guess the solution would be to plan ahead to get out of dodge well before any storm hits. However, with that said, I'm sure many do not have the means to exit which is a sad situation.

I understand the point of allergies being a problem so maybe some shelters should be segragated to accommodate people and their pets?

Not everyone's pet is a cat or a dog - some people have snakes, alligators, poisonous spiders, rats...

Maybe it's just easier to say "No Pets" than try to determine what is allowed in the shelter and what isn't

I am with you on this one. Pets will not be allowed. People would bring everything. Birds, snakes, rats etc. What about people with health issues with animals.

how about an area that would allow caged pets only?...Being in a cage is definitely better than being alone.

Be safe Tom.

Tom's been slamming down the hurricanes early while waiting for the earthquake party.
