We have an Iris. Although the kitchen isn't as large as a Bridgeport of Lantana there is some room for an additional island. I've seenmakeshifts islands in a few kitchens but I'd like to put a nice one that matches the kitchen counter top and counters. I'm thinking of something perhaps 2X4 with cabinet space below. Maybe on wheels.
Any suggestions where to find something like this?

Call the warranty department and find out who put your kitchen counters and cabinets in. Lots of times it is Bailey Industries. Contact them and I'll bet they can do it!

Would this Bailey Industries charge me big $$$. I don't want to take out a second mortgage for a kitchen island.

When you find the manufacturer of the cabinets, you can call around and see who carries that line. For example, our cabinets are made by Homecrest. Bailey, Abshier, and Munz all carried Homecrest when we were looking.
We bought a few items from Abshier who delivered them promptly. Bailey had a long lead time and high price. Munz had the best price plus they had the cabinets in two weeks. They have a workshop located in an office/warehouse center behind Bargains 'n Treasures. Also, I was able to go on line to Homecrest and pick out the exact cabinets, molding, fillers, etc. that we needed before we ordered.
We saw an island someone had put in their Lantana. I think they bought a 24" deep 30" wide base unit to match their cabinetry and put it on casters. Can't remember if it was a drawer or door unit. It was very attractive.

If you remember where you saw the unit and could find out info, it would be great. I am now in NY but will be in TV solo the first two weeks of November. Wife and I will return in Jan thru June. I'd like to have the island installed during my November visit, to surprise her when she returns in January.

Sorry, it was about two years on some kind of house tour, maybe in Amelia. I think the main thing is to determine the dimensions your kitchen can accommodate then look at the mfg catalog to see what they offer. Base cabinets come in different widths but they're all 24" deep. Then decide if you want drawers or doors, and go to a shop (like Munz) and price out the island. You may have to get a granite person to put on a top if that's the surface you have.
What a lovely surprise for your wife! Hope you can pull it off. If we were doing it, and we've thought about it, I think I'd like drawers in it.

Hi,
We were going to have a kitchen island built for us. Decided to get a tea cart the approximate size of the island we wanted first,
Wanted to see if we wanted an island before building one. We found a tea cart that was approximately the size of the island I was going to have built. Tea cart I found out worked better for me than an island.
I wheel the cart where ever I want it, it has a steel square top on one side so that I can put hot things on it without worrying about the wood finish. The tea cart we purchased has one long drawer under the top counter and two enclosed shelves under the drawer.
We were going to have Rick from Harbor town homes build it for us. I had seen other islands he has built and was impressed with the various layouts he created for a kitchen island - his phone number is 259-3379.

Summers Kitchens did our Bridgeport and we already have an island. I did have them add a row of cabinets under the windows near the desk area in a bridgeport and they were reasonable. Matches my cabinets and my granite. That was second job I had them do for us after move in.

We purchased one on casters. Keep it in the laundry room and roll it out when we need it. It has 4 draws and a cupboard adjacen to the draws for storage. Both my neighbor and i purchased ours from Big Lots. Good quality with our neighbor vying for granite top and my wife a butcher block top. Fits well in our latana's Has a great amount of storage space for pots/pans and kitchen towels, etc.

We have a stretched Gardenia. On the back of the door under the sink was the name of the cabinet installer. We called him and he matched the island to our cabinets and also the granite. We used a piece of cardboard as a template to see if the size we wanted would fit, while allowing the dishwasher and refrigerator doors to clear with enough room to walk around. It came out really nice, and was around $1,200. Love it. We will be back in TV after Labor Day. If you want to come by to see it, PM me.
