My golf cart is back fireing after which there is a strong odor of gas. Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be??? Thanks

Your governor is probably set too high. Common problem on Yamaha carts.

What make of cart do you have? What year is your cart? Have you done anything to it recently to cause the backfire?

This happened to a cart that I was using during a 2010 rental and it was a quick fix at The Villages Golf Cart store in LSL. I think it was just a carb adjustment or a throttle cable adjustment. Only took a few minutes.

A backfire (at least on a car) is caused by the spark plug firing while the exhaust valve is open or partially open. I don't know much about golf cart engines but on a car it would be a timing adjustment or a burnt exhaust valve.

Can be caused by the throttle plate in the carburetor being held open just a bit when you let off the accelerator pedal due to an improperly adjusted throttle cable.
