This would need to be at someone's home as the Rec Dept has a policy prohibiting any gambling involving money in the Rec centers.

No money can be on the table at any REC center. With regular poker you can only have a MAX of 7 players at any one table...that allows you to play 7 card , criss-cross, Omaha, follow the queen any of the common games like that. It becomes slightly problematic with 5 card draw with 7 players for the last player have have to draw from discards for there simply are not enough cards if everyone asks for 3 or more cards. Its dealer choice including wild card games (within reason)
So how we handle the money aspect is that someone brings chips and he is the banker. Each player antes up $11 and he gets in return 60 white chips = to $.10 each (or $6) and 4 red chips = to $1each (or $4) The banker keeps a $1 per player for the high hand for the night and will pay out the $7...and we play high hand with no wild cards hands eligible and the high hand must be played out. ie the holder of the high hand cannot bet the max and chase everyone out...he will win the pot but not the high hand..high hand must be played, called or checked. BUT if you have 4 natural Kings and lose to a straight flush with a wild card the 4 kings would still be the high hand even though it did not win but still played.
Betting starts with the dealer anteing up $.10 per player or a total of $.70. First bet is a $.10 with 3 raises allowed, a $.20 bet can be played if a pair is showing (with 3 raises) and $.30 on last card (w 3 raises). At 9:40 when teh REC center is closing we all ante $1 for 7 card showdown..then all games are done. All players then count their chips and ask for payment from the banker. If you have 5 whites or less ($.10) you round down ie 35 white chips is $3.50 but you would collect $3 from the banker where 36 white chips is worth $3.60 but you collect $4......keeps the change out of the game. Rarely does one win or lose more than $20 using this method of play ..last week everyone was within $7 plus or minus and we all had approx 3 hours of fun.. REBUYS are allowed.
Hope this helps...and it keeps the money off the table!

784Caroline...where and when do you play? Are there multiple tables of 7 and is there room for new players to come in?
Thanks.

WE play at Cocunut Cove. Its a small neighborhood game and there is only one table. The problem, with poker is you need 6-7 people to have a good game its not an open game as Texas Holdem. Believe me, its only recently that we built up a good number of players to have adequate backup for people who cannot make it the following week or for the snowbirds who are not around in the summer. We actually send out emails and have people respond who will make it for poker night to make certain we have the 6-7 need....and its all based on when you first joined.

Coming down on the "Preview Lifestyle" plan later this month (December) and think we will really enjoy what we've heard of so far. Part of the time we will be looking at houses and the other part partaking of events, sports, activities. I love poker (whether or not it is for money). Just love the sound of the chips and the company. I certainly hope there are games to be found! Does anyone know if they play poker (dealer's choice) at the rec centers (and yes, I know they don't let you play for money)? Looking forward to coming down!
